Wisdom and Culture

Post by Nick »

From my own personal experience and observations, it seems that when someone encounters Truth in any form, their decision to either welcome or reject it is a lasting decision. Assuming the person is old enough to have the mental capacity for higher thought, I've never seen or heard of anyone who rejected the Truth, and then at a later time came around and began to fully appreciate and understand it. Even on this forum where people are exposed to some of the greatest wisdom and Absolute Truths on a regular basis, I can count the number of people on here with my fingers who I think have any kind of handle on Truth and what it means to live wisely. So, is the vast majority of the human race doomed to live in ignorance? Even if we lived in a society where people were exposed to truth and wisdom on a more regular basis would it make a big enough difference to lead humanity as a whole towards a truly enlightened culture?

If humans are for the most part done evolving in any significant way, then we will continue living in ignorance which will probably lead to a premature destruction due to war, disease, and chemicals. Still there is one dynamic of humanity that continues to evolve and change much faster than our genetic make-up, that dynamic would be culture. Since humans first appeared we haven't changed much beyond aesthetics, but cultures have changed rapidly and significantly during our time on this planet. Competition between cultures has been violent and intense. While the level of enlightenment plays a role in the survivability of culture, it is relatively small in comparison to the role of geographical positioning, availability of resources, and the ability of leaders to unite an entire nation under one flag (which is often done through lies and oppression).

So I'm wondering, if there is anything at all that can be done to foster and expand wise culture, what would it be? This forum is a small example of a wise culture, but does it have the potential to enlighten large numbers of people? I think that on its own, it will never make an impact beyond those anomalies found through-out the human race whose disposition towards wisdom is already sufficiently established. I think the success of a wise culture gaining prominence amongst humanity relies on its ability to abstain from the destructive tendencies that the other cultures seem determined to partake in. In conclusion, I think all the wise can do at this point is sit back and wait for the right time. The right time will probably come only after the other cultures are devastated and exhausted due to war, disease, and toxic chemicals. Until then what do we do? I'd say gathering as much knowledge in math, science, language, and philosophy for safe-keeping would be a good idea. Next would be to find an isolated and fertile area of land to live on. Then just sit back and wait.

Ultimately people have to enlighten themselves, and most people simply don't care. Perhaps the goal of 'us wise people' should be to change this and the fate of the human race (because we care about them and truth?) rather than to try and reach "emptiness" through non-action....

Good luck finding any isolated land to live on that won't be destroyed along with the rest of them.

The one question that people who, in the normal course of thier lives, never ask philosophical questions almost always ask is, "why are we here?"

The answer to this one is so fundamental that it surprises people when they here the answer: We are here to gain knowledge and to learn to love one another. Beyond that, comes wisdom and religion, and believe it or not, happiness.

It's one hell of a tough road we haul, should it be otherwise?
