Strains of Christianity

Post by DHodges »

I am completely amazed, myself, at the tremendous variation within 'mainstream Christianity'.
...
This for example: Emergent Church
There is tremendous variation, no doubt. And some good comes of it (particularly the Quakers, in my opinion). But consider also the Westboro Baptist Church or the Church of Jesus Christ-Christian. These are also part of the reality of Christianity in the US.

Dallas TX is pretty interesting, in that it seems every corner has either a church or a strip club.

The other day after lunch, laying in bed - just to rest the body before going back out into the field - when the thoughts reverted back to our 'troubled son'. I think he will be the one who cares for me when I can't do it any more... I didn't prime him when he was growing up, to be the caretaker for dear? old dad. (I cared for my dad till the day he died, and he cared for his dad) As it's made plain that the girlfriend or I will not be nursing home material :-/

It isn't that we kicked him out after high school, he wanted out - all our grown kids say that they were treated fairly - it's like some days he just doesn't want to do any-thing-whatsoever on his days off from work. Just sits and stares off into space, sometimes at his apartment, the local park wherever.. No medical condition, pehaps that this is what America produces in some people, the electronic gizmos have somehow brainwashed some of the youth - some cartoon mind-controlled him at a specific age - and it is 'kicking in' to do its deed at certain, specific intervals of time.

Oh well.

I think they view Jesus favourably as they can use it as a link between certain minds and thinking about reality. What they point out about Jesus can cause interest and contrast to existing points of view that many have about Jesus.

He does seem quite wise in an enlightened way, depending on what you read and attribute to him. More worthy stuff like the Gospel of Thomas, is less likely to have been twisted as much by vested interests over the years. Compared to those we know of that are recorded historically he was far closer to seeing things as they really are than others of the time and nearly everyone else in between (maybe excluding enlightened folk in India and Asia).

All the same, he may have been a nutcase making opportunity of a combination of eastern mysticism and bit and pieces from meditteranean based religious/social teachings and myths, for his ego's sake. An olden time L Ron Hubbard.

Can't agree with you more, DHodges. The Quakers have an admirable and sober interpretation of Jesus Christ.

Southern-style protestantism (I always thought it was southern), that puts emphasis on having direct experience of the 'holy spirit', opens the door to any kind of hysteria, any kind of excitement. On a good day maybe the Holy Spirit will tell them to lie in a pleasant field and smell the flowers, and on another that they must wipe out all the unbelievers...

It can be an extremely dangerous psychological dabbling.

Strangely, thinking of Churches and Strip Clubs, there is a weird symbiosis between the excitement of sin and the excitement of repentance, they dove-tail into one another.

Still, reading some Quaker essays and other Protestant writings, the sober and sane ones seem to encourage something beneficial...

or on another day, Allah may tell someone to watch a Bruce Willis movie and walk the dog, but not mention that he should put on clothes before walking the dog. Gads, when you only do what God tells you to do like that, you can get in serious trouble.

The reason for no mention of China was that the times I'd been there had not seen one of them. But then, not being religious, not looking either.

What it was like pre-commie era, I dunno. The missionaries were chased out or go underground.

PS - When George W. Bush visited this last time, he made it clear he was going to a protestant church "sanctioned" by the communist party. I seem to remember a broadcaster related that there all of 13 that passed muster with the commies.

Here in America, it falls under the header of 501c3 clause. A .org outfit.

The preacher, rabbi, mulluh, satanist (whatever) signs the same IRS form to receive its 10% "tithe" (tenth) permitted via limited liability. Thus the biblical admonition that states, "Don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing (giving)."

Meaning: If you write a check for 10% of your gross paycheck to [name the church] the IRS agent (your friendly neighborhood priest, rabbi, mullah) reports this to the gov't so you can write it off on your taxes.

As an aside - One of the first acts that Dubya did (February of 2001?) was for the IRS (Treasury) agents to raid Indianapolis Baptist Temple...because they refused the idea/concept that an Admirality American flag be at their altar of worship, meaning that the corpse (corporation) has dominion. A president, vice-prsident, secretary, treasurer be voted upon b congregation and apply for 501c3 status. Don't believe me? do a search...(avoid google as it is gov't mainstream bs)

As far as loving and/or rejecting god, who knows? Guess when I have thus breathed my last breath - the time travel will have become self-evident for me to see :-/

Until then, you all continue chasing your tails...

brokenhead: You can experience God.

Loki: Oh yeah? And how do you know that it's God you are experiencing?
That's a very fair question, Loki. But to follow my answer, you'll have to accept my understanding that God is not identical with the Totality, if that isn't already your own understanding.

If God were the Totality, then everything you, as part of the Totality, experience would necessarily be experiencing a part of God. This follows logically, but since it does not answer your fair question, it is irrelevant

If God were the Totality, you would have to experience God and nothing else.

Think of it like this:

When you hear a middle C played on a piano, you are never hearing a pure middle C. The strings which are struck vibrate in halfs, thirds, etc. You hear a superposition of middle C's overtone sequence. You are hearing G, E, A, ... as well, in much smaller proportions. The precise proportions differ from instrument to instrument, which is why a C on a piano doesn't sound the same as a C on a clarinet. Even though you are hearing all those different notes at once, you can pick out the tonic note.

I am trying to tell you that when you are experiencing God, you automatically know it. It's like picking out the tonic note.

It's simply following the Tao. It's not magic.
brokenhead: Part of faith is understanding that it is not a delusion.

Loki: How do you know it's not a delusion?
Another very fair question. Answer: By comparing it to things you know to be delusions.

The Quakers and Shakers wanted to be free to practice Christianity not always standing up.

They literally free potential energy from themselves by permitting it to become kinetic energy; hence the shaking and quaking. It is a voluntary epileptic siezure. And it makes physical sense, because we absorb energy all day long, constantly, in the form of light and sound, touch taste and smell; we take what we need and pass on the rest. Quaking results in a lower energy state.

I suppose it also causes the body to release endorphins. It's a controlled ecstasy, a kind of release, which readies the organism for yet more input.

You can see Quakerism in this way is part of a natural cycle. The quaking is a release mechansim, enabling the practitioners to lead peaceful lives, as opposed to being aggressive and raping and pillaging.

Don't the strip joints and casinos of Las Vegas have a church in the first floor? They do in Panama.

When were you last in Panama, Alex? The whole block where the El Panama Hotel gardens used to be, is now covered with casinos and hotels, and there are a lot of strip joints there. The church is across the street from El Panama. It is called El Carmen and is a landmark of Panama City.

http://joyceandjaime.com/Assets/BIG-El_ ... Church.jpg

Okay, so maybe there are more strip clubs and casinos in that block than there are churches. But the churches and strip clubs are both everywhere, and the law that says that there cannot be any bars or drinking within a certain distance (100 meters or so) of a church isn't really enforced very often.

Old-man Tomas,

You know, I too have a soft spot for you. Really, I do. I'd even enjoy sitting out on the patio with a glass of red wine listening to your stories. But, you are guarded. You have a way of speaking that is so depleted of actual self-substance, you never really say anything inspirational. More like a salve, ya know? So, my dear, the moral of the story is that we're not on a patio, here, and it would be nice to have something substantial from you to sink my intellectual teeth into, for a change. Your henid driven hit-and-run side swipes and self-indulgent one-liners are as exactly as thought provoking as the function of a circuit breaker. You provide a safe form of entertainment, maybe. But, hell, what’s youtube for?
Look, you communist sympathizer, I don't watch Utube crap.
Oh, that’s right, it’s far beneath your intellect—dealing as it does in pictures rather than abstract, logical thinking…

I guess I’ll just leave you to the likes of your own audience, though. Enjoy.
Now see here, don't be taking that tone with me. I'll get Molly after you .. she will deal with you!
No, please, not—NOT Molly the Jersey cow!

:)

Love, your resident commie chick xo

Shah, you said they built a church on the ground floor and had casinos above!

I am regularly in PC and still have property in Panama.

As you know, in Latin America, any law can be bent and it depends on who your connections are. Up in B------, on the West side of Panama, there is a bar right on the main plaza the present mayor wanted to shut down because of an existing law that you can't have a bar on a plaza. He did everything in his power to shut it, said he'd resign if it wasn't closed, but the owner had connections in PC and got an injunction to stay open. And it is just a crappy little dive bar. (He didn't resign...)

Plus, you forgot that I lived just a few blocks away from El Carmen, in front of Parque Uraca.
