And yet still, there's a need, in many people, to discuss this stuff. This one friend of mine, a practical sort, who has no interest in the Big Questions, is always telling me: "Ace, why do you waste your time thinking about that stuff. You're just hitting your head against a brick wall. You're never going to figure it all out."

Which may be true. But that doesn't stop the need, within many people, for some kind of answer. Even if it so often leads to talking around in circles on a message board.

There's no maybe to me. But if you look at what her happiness is built upon, who could envy it? May as well envy the happiness of a serial killer lopping the heads of children. i.e. happiness is not virtuous of itself.

Alex!

I think I am the only one who understands you!

Carl
is the philosophical life the same as the spiritual life?
Philosophy is the intellectual understanding of the spiritual life. One is mental, the other is actual experience.

Iolaus, What pretentious crapper you are! Metaphysical philosophy = intellectual masturbation i.e.the object of your desire is never present so you imagine...then start to wank...

You don't even know what metaphysics is so it's rich of you to criticise others for wanking.

As you know, wanking can be a rich and pleasurable experience! Try thinking outside the box Danny Boy...I'm beginning to think that there are few, if any, real philosophers in here at all...Metaphysics? Its you who haven't a clue Danny. Do you think your easternized buddhistic inundations and X-tacies about 'ultimate reality' and 'enlightenment' REALLY constitute SERIOUS philosophical thinking? The walls of every new age book shop are literally lined with this kind of mind pulp...

I tend to agree. There is little evidence on this board of anything beyond mental wanking going on.

It is not completely clear to me what your objection was to my definition. It seems you have agreed more than disagreed with it. Are you saying that all philosophy can only be intellectual masturbation? That there is no legitimate way to ever discuss actual experience?

Tell us, then, what is the difference between philosophical life and spiritual life?

lol I doubt their happy when they're doing that. They are seeking that, though, in a deranged sort of way. They may do it again and again, hoping to be satisfied.
