Dissociation
Dissociation
Quote:
"You claim not to have an agenda against Eastern religion, yet you use the term 'dissociation' -- this is a term used by Western psychology to provide a secular explanation for what are really 'higher states of consciousness'."
I am agnostic, now, about whether "higher states of consciousness" exist.†However, I personally doubt that "dissociation", which can be produced by everything from TV-watching to day-dreaming, is the goal of Eastern spirituality.†Dissociation is very easily produced, as Mahesh has demonstrated."

Re: Dissociation
It's definitely not the goal of any authentic Eastern tradition. Things like that are means to an end, or simply interesting side-effects. Those who peddle such states as the goal are typically trying to sell something.

Re: Dissociation
TM may be nonsense - and it is - but no more so than conventional social perspectives. Anything that leads to perspectives in variance to the herd is automatically deemed bad or cultist or whatever with barely an ounce of rational judgement being applied to it first.
Re: Dissociation
Dan, your mantra is HIRIM. You must say this mantra for three hours per day with great conviction in order to clear all bad karma from the throat, nose, and gall bladder. If you do this, you will manifest all your dreams, including the ones involving a statue of Natalie Portman naked and petrified in a pool of hot grits.
Oh, and that will be $3000. A bill is already in the mail.

Re: Dissociation
Um, is that pronounced "Hereim" or "Herim"? Could mean the difference between good and bad karma ya know.
Re: Dissociation
I would have thought so as well, but apparently the official "TM checking notes" say otherwise:
There's also something in very fine print... let me see if I can make it out...In this meditation, we do not concentrate, we do not try to say the mantra clearly. Mental repetition is not a clear pronunciation, it is just a faint idea.
Ah... that clears it up.Pronouncing the mantra correctly is not important. Actually saying the mantra at all is not important. What is important is paying us $1000, preferably by cashier's check or wire transfer.

Hmm. If no-one has anything of a philosophical nature to add to this discussion I'll move it to Worldly Matters soon.
