Faith in logic - a clarification:

Post by jupiviv »

What is faith in logic? Sometimes we don't want to believe that things are true. For example, when someone is about to die, they don't want to believe it, even if they know they will. So the faith in logic would be to believe in logic, i.e, things are necessarily what they are, even when someone else tells us otherwise, or when we feel bad about them being that way.

Logic only arises when we become conscious of something. The essential element is our consciousness, not the thing we may be conscious of. Belief is simply this act of being conscious - being ourselves, no matter what anyone else may say, or what else we ourselves could become. This is why logic can never be known or understood, since there is nothing to understand. So, logic must be believed, but nothing is hidden in such a belief. Such a belief is really a belief in oneself - one's own existence. It is the greatest form of reverence.

The other kind of "belief" - where the belief is directed at some object outside oneself, is really a kind of superstition. It is the positing of a third entity outside ourselves, and the thing we are conscious of. Why is this wrong? Because we do not know what it is that we believe in, but we do so anyway. A Christian does not know what God is, but believes in him anyway. Similarly, a materialist does not know why he puts value on money or pleasure, but does so anyway. That is why it is wrong. Unfortunately though, you can't force people to believe in anything, so if anyone chooses to believe in that which is false, the only thing that can be done is to persuade him to do otherwise.

Yes, belief in logic is disbelief in belief.

even those who believe in stuff that has no evidence or any sensible, rational, foundation believes in logic of some kind.
Namely, the logic that is comfort, and thus darkness. People don't want to know. Ignorance is bliss, as they say.

So some people are aware that their believes work for them, even if they believe in them blindly. Some people don't believe without a good reason, carefully checking out whether a belief is sound, or not, and some don't.
Some do not require any more evidence than that it makes them feel good. That is their reason. Likewise, if something feels bad, they do not believe in it.

It's reasonable to be reasonable for a reasonable person, right?

Well. Reason solves many of the problems that willing blindness and ignorance cause their carriers.
If only ordinary people knew how many of their problems were so breaktakingly simple to take care of, if they cared to think and do something about it..

People have not seen anything other than their own lives, so they can't really contrast it for something else. They can't identify it as a quite purposeless void because that's all they've ever been doing. They have no idea how to do anything else. If one knows of something higher, then it's very easy to become dis-satisfied with it, if one has a mind, you can make the contrast between the actual and the ideal. Though there is great delight in the void of theirs, it turns sour. Then surely one wishes one was not there, but in that unhappiness, there is usually only happiness on the horizon, and no-body to talk about transcending both! Where is the ideal?

To start fixing the millions of problems people have, you must fix the root-cause of it, their egoes. But it's such a stone-solid part of their world that it seems inprenetrable. Most people live such that happiness and unhappiness barely even strikes or touches them, only the least least bit of conscious activity goes on judging by people's quite un-inspiring lives. Nothing in their consciousness upsets them much. There is little fire in them.

Buddha supposedly said that even tiny water-drops, dropping one at a time unto a rock, will eventually make a hole....part of making such a hole involve making people aware of that which is permanent and un-changing, to show that a way exists that can transcend their everyday problems, the hole that I think of, is a hole in people's slumbering minds. Hardly anybody cares enough to venture out and even be so bold as to ask why they have to feel unhappy, let alone quest to fix it.

A mind must needs to become dissatisfied with their lives of unhappiness and happiness. It must actually desire to solve the situation. Surely nature must give it the all important contrast, that will make it aware that there is something to attain out there, something better than it's state of fleeting happiness.

I guess that's why most happy people are not fit for much reason, they aren't dissatisfied enough. To be that un-satisfying voice that is constantly telling people of the prize that they have yet to reach, or to be the contrast with which one can discover something much unlike normal human life, much more intriquing, and infinitely superior to normal human life, or atleast, the very inkling of something with a vastly different strength....But what person would take notice?

Do not throw pearls to swine, Jesus said... People are generally not very aware, so it's no wonder that even if you entice them to look beyond their usual horizons, they will not notice much. Aye, maybe you shouldn't spoil pigs with things they do not understand, but even the dullest of people might gain the littlest of benefits, and even the littlest steps can one day carry you where-ever you may go.

Those who worry about throwing pearls before swine are usually swine without pearls.

I know, but who's to judge who is "deserving?"

Thus what I originally said.
