Dan,
The question was:
How drunk is no-how?

Drunkenness oft leads to contradiction.

Oh, stuff it coward. Where's your picture (and your real name)? Pretty easy to sit behind a screen name and no picture and call people ugly.

I wonder if it would be excessive to automatically ban people who start nonsense threads.

Ever played baseball? A "player" gets three strikes... then, yer out!

Perhaps, freeze (or remove) the offending thread.

If it happens the second time, same deal. Two outs.

Third time, life-time banishment. And pumped full of steroids, to boot. Or, put the idiot on cyberspace psychiatric drugs.

If the clown shows up with a different email addy (like Donna) may need to bar the IP.

If it is the pink cat in the room, anybody's guess.

ps- Did a search engine (can't recall which) on "shapesphere" and came up with a couple James Joyce websites. HMM.

I don't think it is. If a post is not a product of consciously understanding the forum and posting in the spirit of it then I think it falls under the same category as spam: something more or less posted on autopilot.

I think you should do it every now and then - I've always thought it brings down the quality of the forum too much, so if someone potentailly decent is just surfing through they might have one look and decide "there are too many nutters here", so they just move on.

I've been thinking that lately, too. I've been trying to ignore it, but it is annoying. And sometimes I feel like if I ignore them, then that validates them in a way - the idiocy goes unchallenged. But arguing with idiots is also pretty pointless.

The Something Awful forums have a system where posters are banned for a certain number of hours (or days), depending on how annoying they were (to the particular moderator). You have to be a pretty consistent, deliberate asshole to get permanently banned. Something like that might work, since it reduces the incentive to go set up a new account with a different email, but obviously it it more work for the moderators and might require some software change.

Perhaps we need an ignore system.

There is one already - that's the friend/foe option when you look at someone's profile.

edit: no-how has convinced me to start using the foe option.
