We create things which are singular to humanity, however, those things haven't advanced us past our animal ancestors they just gave us Game Boy's and the internal combustion engine. All things which give us an edge over every living species on this planet but we still react with our animal instincts.
Sometimes we do, and sometimes we act or react with cruelty and other base impulses which you really don't find in nature. You have to grow up a little here. Would you tell the widow of a New York City fireman who walked up the WTC stairs on 9/11 when everyone else was going down that her man was no better than a chicken? This forum is a great place to bellyache about a variety of things, and I would hope that's what you're doing. All those human animals you see bustling about like lemmings are not your enemies. Soldiers are encouraged to dehumanize the enemy so it can be more readily killed, and allowing yourself to wallow in alienation is the first step in that processs, in surrendering your own humanity. If you just scratch the surface, all those human animals have lives, such as they are, some ugly, some beautiful, but each one their own.

If all you can see of technological advancements is their downside, you're not participating enough. Feeling disenfranchised is not uncommon in young people. It just means you're human. Do you suppose none of the lemmings rushing for the subway in the morning ever felt that way? It's like that Monkees song "Pleasant Valley Sunday," which was written, like most of their songs, by Carole King: "Another Pleasant Valley Sunday/Here in status symbol land/Rows of houses that are all the same/And no one seems to care."

All I can say is grow some cajones. When your ideas get stolen and your ideals stripped away, fight back. Where you see a lack of love, put it there; where you see cowardice, be brave; where you see selfishness, keep them off balance with real caring. Kill them with kindness. Be your own fucking hero.

broken,
As I read your response I couldn't help feeling you were responding to someone else because I don't feel I embody any of what you said.

When I talk about "humanity" it's in the general sense that the word is associated with. As a whole we have failed to push ourselves over the edge into something better, into a species which obviously doesn't need to fight over land, resources and beliefs or into a society which can feed far more (if not all) people on the planet. For all our advancement there are areas where I live which I can't even drive through during the day without some measure of fear.

Individual humans can be truly wonderful beings, however, as a whole we are a despicable species which is horribly destructive without, or with minimal, regard for anything else or itself.

Compared to what other species that is not despicable? Where do you get your high hopes for humanity?

There are no edges.

Look - all I'm trying to do is to shine some light on the flip side of the coin you tossed. I'd rather be alive today than at any other time in our common history as I understand it.

The Twentieth Century was a edgy as things get. If you step back and go for some persective, we're all God's children. In fact, many of the negative impressions impinging on your consciousness are the direct result of grownups indeed acting like children.
