Pi
Pi
Could the illusive Pi 'simply' be a code for the purpose of life in the universe? Pi: the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter - infinity to temporal existence, the whole to a part. All throughout the natural world, we find a striving for symmetry, a striving for 'wholeness' - our bodies, plant life, musical harmony, etc. Pi: 3.1463537228161517. Pi is striving itself; striving towards a 'whole' number, infinitely.
What's the significance of the number four? Four is a 'symmetrical number.' Four represents a quaternary. The psychological giant, Carl Jung, observed numerous instances of quaternaries spontaneously appearing in his patients visions and dreams - during intense periods of psychic transformation. Other symbols which manifested during these struggles for 'psychic wholeness' included the circle and the spiral - both inherent in the mathematical properties of Pi.
Evolution of consciousness is the purpose of the universe. And seeing that we are a part of nature, evolution of human consciousness is the purpose of our life. But, what can be said of the embedded symbols in the collective human psyche? Paradoxically, the part (the individual human mind) contains the whole (the universe).
What other secrets are lying dormant in our Mind?

Re: Pi
Quote:Quote:
Evolution of consciousness is the purpose of the universe.
If our consciousness is to evolve, one of the first things we need to do is give up the idea that the universe has a purpose. It doesn't. There is only the process of cause and effect, and nothing else. It is blind, aimless, and spontaneous.
To be sure, as conscious beings, we have to create purpose for our lives. But this has no applicability to Nature itself.
Another important factor in the evolution of consciousness is the abandonment of mathematics as a philosophic tool. The great wisdom of Nature cannot be understood through mathematics. It can only be understood through a mix of wise philosophic concepts and pure reasoning.
Although it has its uses, mathematics is essentially a type of intellectual activity for people who are too scared to look at Reality directly and who seek refuge in trivial problem solving instead. An emotional attachment to mathematics will always hinder the evolution of consciousness.

Re: Pi
What sevens is talking about is not mathematics. It is numerology.
Re: Pi
Where is it written that mathematics cannot be used as a conceptual tool for philosophical exploration? In fact, with the right amount of imagination and logic, anything can be used. The shortest distance between two points may be a line, but when gazing at the stars, alternate paths connect new constellations.
Numerology? If you must. But, keep this fact in mind: the 'number' known as Pi is no tarot card count. Pi is a unique product of nature, a unique occurance in nature - it is embedded in nature! What other 'number' carries such significance? Wouldn't you agree that significance points towards meaning? Are you a natural nihilist? Do you only see weeds when you see the earth? What would Pythagoras think if he could see our Milky Way?
And tell me (mathematically?), why are the spiral and the circle the most appealing (pure) forms to the human eye?
To connect some dots, a few leaps are required.

'Purpose' is loaded with sentimental attachments. Let's use 'Reason' instead. The reason that the universe is: to achieve 'consciousness' of itself, through the process of cause and effect - evolution. Since we are products of the universe, the reason for 'our' (there are always anomolies - asymmetries that still serve the greater symmetry) temporal existence is to achieve 'consciousness' of ourselves, through the faculties of the human mind.
Since we were created by the universe, through cause and effect, and have a mind which subsequently mimics nature's causal process: the universe is a Mind. Truly, to uncover the mysteries of nature, one need look no further then the nature of your own mind.
Pure 'free will' is an illusion. But, a 'freer will' is available. This fact would explain the apparent irrational cause of dreams; which in reality are keys to new doors of perception. But, again, 'dreams' carry with it a sentimental history, but who would deny truth for the purpose of a persona!

Quote:Quote:
Numerology? If you must.
Just to be clear on this point: Mathematics is a useful tool, a symbolic language. As David Quinn pointed out, it has (very) limited application within philosophy.
Numerology, on the other hand, is assigning meaning to digits. Numerology is complete and utter bullshit. Numerology is a deliberate descent into mystical mumbo-jumbo.

These numbers come up as naturally as pi.
Incidentally, the band Hard 'N Phirm have a most excellent song about pi, which you can listen to here:

Re: Pi
To be clear, I was attempting to assign meaning to the idea of Pi and its forms - the golden spiral, the circle, the infinite sequence with no pattern. Do e, phi, and the square root of two hold such an enigmatic place in nature? Did you take into consideration the psychological connection and its implications before your 'mumbo-jumbo' bark? I apologize if I stepped on your calculator with my paint brush.
Or is the realm of psychology too mystical for your 'concrete numbers'? I was of the opinion that math should be viewed with awe and wonder, and an air of mysticism; seeing that the universe is largely a mystery.
The circle and spiral being the most appealing forms draws a connection between the psyche, math, and the natural world - all intrinsically interconnected. With a little deduction, many other hidden gems could surface. A connection between math and disease? Understanding the psyche, mathematically? Memory = Q (Time + Feeling)?
Funny how I arrived at Truth through alternate paths. Wonder how mathematicians arrive at new theorems.

It is a great pleasure to read the intellectual minds here at temporary genius. Everyone here has great ideas. Sharing them is the most important part.
"Since we are products of the universe, the reason for 'our' temporal existence is to achieve 'consciousness' of ourselves, through the faculties of the human mind"
We already have consciousness of ourselves to varying degrees, we only need to develop our consciousness

Re: Pi
I've experienced cosmic consciousness, I've been there.
Its totally mind awareness nothing else, you speak through your own existence, there is no body, you're an invisible entity, I spoke with the entity travelling parallel to my own entity. I wanted to know where we were going, it was a female voice, and she said,"we will be there soon" thats all she spoke. This is how it began. I was in my bed sleeping, then the next thing I know I'm rising up up up it didn't take long before I knew I was no longer on earth.
We were travelling rapidly, but it was comfortable and natural. There was no fear, just anxious to know where we were going. I said no more to the voice, I don't know when we arrived there, its as though my mind has been erased from what I seen. I remember nothing.
Here's another event
Whatever is out there, this is the second time its visited me. I was visited by an Alien or whatever it was.
It was June 11 the worst storm I'd seen in Edmonton ever, so who can sleep when there is a major electrical thunderous storm happening, I remember getting out of bed and taking my bobby pins out of my hair, because I thought the lightning would be attracted to the metal on them, then the next thing I know is we are leaning up against the bed chatting, and there is this thing standing right in the doorway of the bedroom, we both slipped down pulling the blanket over our heads, I had noticed the thing, hadn't seen us, it was staring straight ahead. I remember thinking if this wasn't true than how do I know which blanket is over my head. I have no idea of the amount of time we spent under the blanket, but finally I slowly lifted the blanket off my eyes and I stared over at the bedroom doorway and the thing was still there, and it saw me, and I knew it, I pulled the blanket back over my head, and I knew this thing was heading towards me, I didn't hear it, I sensed it, and I was right. I had no fear. Then I knew it was right beside me, it put what I thought to be its bony fingers right over my whole face, like it knew intuitively where my face was. It seemed to be extracting or putting something via my face. Then I knew it was gone, everything was over, I arise from bed, so did he, we both looked at the clock, two hours was missing. If the electrical storm had of interupted the mechanism of the clock it would have been beeping but it wasn't. We cannot explain what happened to two hours. It was like a time thing, happened.
The same fellow and I were communicating via msn chat about four months ago, we're 1000 miles from each other. We both get interupted by the U.S Government, sending both of our sides, links to this and that Government Agencies, it was incredibly amazing, I jotted down some of these sites down on paper somewhere. We both were so astonished by what just had happened that we both instead of continue talking with each other we checked out the sites immediately that were being offered to us. Now how often does this sort of thing take place, where both parties are involved.

Well, yeah, they do. That was my point.
The square root of two, and e, are like pi in that they are irrational numbers (the infinite sequence you mention). The square root of two has a similar relationship to a square as pi does to a circle. And e arises naturally whenever you consider a phenomenon where growth is directly related to size. Phi has its own very interesting properties.
Anyway, if you want a number to get all mystical about, I would suggest i (the square root of minus one).
Quote:Quote:
Did you take into consideration the psychological connection and its implications before your 'mumbo-jumbo' bark?
Well, yes and no. I gave it all the consideration that (in my opinion) it is due. Numerology is in the same league as astrology, palm reading, and predicting earthquakes from the entrails of sheep.

Quote:Quote:
Or is the realm of psychology too mystical for your 'concrete numbers'?

Why is that in quotes? Numbers are by their nature, abstract.
If you want to talk about psychology, that’s fine. I happen to be something of a fan of Freud, although a friend of mine (whose opinion I respect because he has a PhD in psychology) assures me that Freud was full of shit. (That's Sigmund Freud, not to be confused with Frued router bits.)
Quote:Quote:
I was of the opinion that math should be viewed with awe and wonder, and an air of mysticism; seeing that the universe is largely a mystery.

My opinion is entirely different. Math is a tool. There is nothing more awe-inspiring or mysterious about math than there is about a table router. Like a table router, it is very, very good at certain things, and not much good outside that realm. A table router does not make a very good hammer.
(Irrelevant aside: Come to think of it, I do have a certain amount of awe for my table router… and it’s not even a particularly nice one, as table routers go. But, come on, 25,000 RPM! That’s pretty cool.)
If by mystery you mean that the universe is largely an unknown, full of I-don’t-know, then yes, that is true. There is plenty of mystery. There is no need to go around making more.
Quote:Quote:
The circle and spiral being the most appealing forms draws a connection between the psyche, math, and the natural world - all intrinsically interconnected.

Again, you just state this as if it is a well-established fact.
Is it a fact? Or is it just your opinion? Has there been some study showing that people prefer circles to triangles and squares?
If it is true, why would that human preference have any particular philosophical significance?
If you are only interested in a psychological significance, then, well, what do you think it is? Do people like circles because they are shaped like tits? (Desmond Morris might like that one.)
Well, yeah, they do. That was my point.

Re: Pi
Give 'Thus Spake Zarathustra' another clean read. Your reading skills, like your table router, need to be sharpened. Hey, what true mathematician considers math as 'only a tool'? If everything in the universe can be expressed in numbers, then that is one meta-tool!
The square root of two is describing the properties of a square, correct? Well, a square is not a product of nature. And are these other irrational numbers devoid of a discernable pattern?
I placed 'concrete numbers' in quotes to draw attention to the fact that numbers, like psychology, are abstract. But, you're familar with Freud - who was not 'full of shit.' To throughly understand a mind, you must first possess the mind. And if you really want to appreciate the beauty of psychology, read Carl Jung.
I'm glad you have a friend, and one with a PhD! It's been my experience that the vast majority of 'registered psychologists' are no different than the paper that their 'higher level' degrees are printed on. (Now, what are the properties of paper?) You can't cut through bullshit with paper. And more importantly, you can't pioneer new lands with paper either - that takes a sledgehammer.

No, bullshit, never! Pure 100% truth and accuracy
I knew we had travelled a vast distance, by the speed we were travelling. I have to question WHY me? I know how ignorant I am, why would they choose me over someone with more degrees than a thermometer
It matters not to me whether this truth holds truth with you, it only matters that this truth happened to truth, and I being truth is all that matters. I was chosen for a reason -twice, and no amount of PhD can ever measure up to what I experienced.

Phi, The Golden Ratio, Human Slaves
we all know about the golden ratio, phi. And we all know how the human body is described by the ratio 1.618. But do you know about how the fallen angels descended into flesh, about human slaves. Funny that slaves were first introduced to manhattan which coincidentally was landed on 9/11/1609 was 1619 that being equivalent to 1618 adjusted for year 0. Gives an all new meaning to coats of skins.

My child,
Careful of what you write.
You referring to your band Hard n' Phirm is an obvious outcry for acknolwedgement of your phallic style of styles.
Seems you are here to compete, not to learn.
I see little or no value in your words.
why not dwell in the brothel and let us masters of all that exists talk? otherwise, you will just have to hear the words of the man with the mirrored face.....

on Phi
Phi is one of the two great treasures of geometry
Phi or , was described by Johannes Kepler as one of the "two great treasures of geometry." (The other is the Theorem of Pythagoras.)
In a triangle it forms the dimensions of the great pyramids of Egypt. A ruler and compass can be used to form the "golden rectangle" used by the Greeks in the Parthenon. (See also the Orthogons page.) Phi also defines the dimensions of a pentagon.
Phi can be constructed from concentric circles whose sizes are in a ratio of 1 : 2 : 4. Draw a tangent from the small circle through the other two and the ratio of AC to AB is Phi, as AB = 2 * 3½ and AC = 15½ + 3½, which by factoring out the 3½ can be reduced to a ratio of 2 to (5½+1), or Phi.
"
The golden ratio can even be found in the bible in the dimensions of the ark of the covenant and noah's ark
"In Exodus 25:10, God commands Moses to build the Ark of the Covenant, in which to hold His Covenant with the Israelites, the Ten Commandments, saying,
"Have them make a chest of acacia wood-
two and a half cubits long,
a cubit and a half wide,
and a cubit and a half high."
"

pi itself is even encoded in the bible
"Jesus wept" is the shortest verse in the Christian New Testament according to the division of chapters and verses of the Bible, in particular the King James Version. It is found in the Gospel of John, Chapter 11:35.

Re: Pi
"Geometry has two great treasures: one is the theorem of Pythagoras; the other, the division of a line into extreme and mean ratio.
The first we may compare to a measure of gold; the second we may name a precious jewel."
-- Johannes Kepler [1571-1630]
Everywhere on the Internet there are loads of sayings like that by Kepler with no reference to the source.
Kepler in his work "Mysterium Cosmographicum" of 1962 expressed such a thought on p.42, p.47 and p.50-51.
However he used completely different words to express it.
So, from which work of Kepler was the saying above quoted?
The first we may compare to a measure of gold; the second we may name a precious jewel."
