Deifying the QRS

Post by Elizabeth Isabelle »

I would rather have waited until I thought through all this more before posting it, but the conversation already started in another thread, so I figure it is time to start this thread.

Here is the other thread and here are the relevant excerpts:
Nick: It's ironic seeing people focussing on Dan's life, something irrelevant to their own spiritual progress, while they accuse him of focussing on something supposedly irrelevant to his spiritual development.

Carl: Dan puts himself out there as an enlightened being, and as such is a spiritual teacher. One's words are not divorced from one's lifestyle, and the proof is in the pudding. It is therefore at least somewhat relevant how he lives.

Elizabeth: Agreed. I know that Dan (and Kevin and David) don't intend to misrepresent themselves in any way; but in talking about their ideals, they often do not realize the difference between the internet impression they give of how they live and what the tangible reality of their lives are. That hearkens back to my complaints about truthful representation. It took a lot of digging for me to get a reasonable understanding of what was really going on here because they don't understand the importance of the details that are not so idealistic but are real. In their good efforts to present only what is really important (because there is already plenty of fluff on the internet), certain things come across as distorted. It's really fascinating to me how they (as quite reasonable people) can state the truth, yet reasonable people can still infer a false perception from the stated truth. It's the seemingly unimportant details that pin the truth and the reality together. It's going to take me a while to digest how this occurs.

BTW, QRS - y'all need to update your profile pages. Seriously.

Dan: What do you think needs to be changed/added, exactly?

Elizabeth: Your page still paints you as less human than you are, but it is going to take me awhile to figure out what, if anything, needs to be said to that effect. Perhaps just stating what is really obvious to you, and I can hear you now saying "That's something that shouldn't have to be said" - but - maybe right next to where you state that you are doing your best, specifically point out that you are a human? I know how stupid that sounds, and you're probably not the only one who'll just about die laughing at that concept, but you don't see the impression you give the newbies.

keenobserver: if you had any idea what it meant to be genuinely enlightened and how incredibly rare and infinitely removed it is from the race as a whole, well then ..(you know what im going to say dont you...). You simply cannot appreciate the achievement.

Just think about the person or skill or attainment you admire the most and then multiply that by one thousand and then maybe you'll be approching the worth and preciousness of true philosophic genius. Nothing not even Christian conceptions of God deserve greater association with deity. If an enlightened being isnt a god then no one and no thing IS.

Elizabeth: Dan, I'll just call this "exhibit B."

Dan: "Exhibit B" didn't speak to me much, frankly.

Elizabeth: "Exhibit B" means that it looks like keenobserver does consider you a living deity.

Dan: As it should be. About damn time! (edit by Elizabeth - I'm quite sure Dan was joking here. Dan - would you please confirm this before people start setting up altars in their rooms with your photos on them?)

Carl: Count me in among those who view QRS as living deities. That is how I think they try to come across.
Carl,

In your opinion, what makes a deity?

How about you call them "David Quinn, Dan Rowden, and Kevin Solway, three highly talented and dedicated philosophers, non-attached to any formal institution, who jointly moderate the Genius Realms, an Internet Forum."

Then, rather than "The Gods QRS", you will have a relatively accurate picture of the human beings, and how they relate to the other independent philosophers who exchange their ideas and correspondences on this forum.

Elizabeth and Carl need a "Jesus" in their life. I don't know what the hell you guys are expecting an enlightened person to act and look like, but I imagine it's pretty ridiculous. So what is it you expect, a person levitating with rays of light beaming out of their bodies? God forbid they shit, piss, and eat food like a bunch of lowly humans right? Idiots!

Don't spoil the fantasy, Nick. As an enlightened sage, I can guarantee you that using only a humble piece of plastic, I can obliterate your ass with magic missiles.

First of all, I don't worship the QRS. Secondly, as for that description of an enlightened being, crud - you're a causative factor of me changing my avatar. We'll see how long I keep it though...

This whole issue strikes me as piffle. People who want to "deify" anyone are of zero interest to me. Seriously, why should I care? To believe yourself capable of averting all possible delusion in people you come in contact with or have discussions with is to be one of those guru types who truly think themselves god-like.

I don't think that fits.

First, QRS claims to be a rare form of human, the Enlightened. How rare? This is lost in myth, actually; I certainly wouldn't hope to find a quote, but I believe Solway once said something to the effect that they were three of a mere handful alive at this time on Planet Earth.

Second, QRS claim powers or experiences that mere mortals cannot hope to attain. Quinn says he "spends his days immersing himself in the Infinite." Whenever asked about what this is like, he says one must find it for oneself. It is obviously either not describable to regular folk, or to describe this is verboten, either by the brotherhood of Enlightened Ones, or perhaps by God?

Third, Quinn calls this reality (The Infinite) God, saying " My aim in life is to awaken as many people as possible to this marvelous reality, which I sometimes call God or Tao." Who else but a god (a deity, a high priest, a saint) would speak of such rare experiences, due only to those who have purified themselves, their minds especially, of this world's delusions? Such perfection, such aim in itself, is strong evidence of godliness. And it must be. There must be gods as these on Earth to lead the masses, or at least lead the self-annointed to this path to the higher realms.

I believe Solway believes this more than Quinn, and both do more than the frequently belly-aching and back-sliding Dan Rowdan. Dan seems to care not a whit for the inference of the responsibility of leadership, and therefore does not inspire. It is only those who recognize their station, and live up to it, who truly ascend to that earthly godliness.

Lastly, look how QRS compare themselves, indeed put themselves up there with the finest examples of humanly Enlightenment ever known to exist: "Socrates, Diogenes, Buddha, Lao Tzu, Jesus, Nagarjuna, Huang Po, Chuang Tzu, Hakuin, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Eckhart."

They clearly see themselves as gods, though we may quibble on the definitions. Separate question altogether is whether or not they really are...gods, enlightened, leaders, perfected, and all the rest.

Yes, Elizabeth's desire to intimately connect with Quinn, Solway and Rowden is her only reason for the creation of this thread. But, of course, that is not unusual knowing the nature of Woman. She is incapable of connecting to truth, so she must quarry from the philosophical man a place for herself - in this case, the position of self-appointed arbitrator of all things petty.

What you’ve said doesn’t in any way refute Trevor’s description. To be a “highly talented and dedicated philosopher” of truth is in all practicality the same thing as being enlightened.
The fact that you lack the desire or curiosity to find out for yourself what Quinn is on about does not at all refute Trevor’s description.
Your jadedness shines through in all of this post, but mostly in the above paragraph. You sound bitter and flippant – neither of which shore up your argument against Trevor’s description.
I believe Solway believes this more than Quinn, and both do more than the frequently belly-aching and back-sliding Dan Rowdan.
There is no doubting that all three men value truth, but I know that not because they’ve said so – no, I know that because I know what it is to value truth and live according to it. But how do you know it Carl? Are you a man who values truth above all other things? Is it as a man of truth that you judge these other men?
Dan seems to care not a whit for the inference of the responsibility of leadership, and therefore does not inspire. It is only those who recognize their station, and live up to it, who truly ascend to that earthly godliness.
What “station”? Philosophers are considered by most people to be on the same level as homeless bums. Over the centuries they have been mostly ignored, imprisoned, crucified, or considered “insane”.
Lastly, look how QRS compare themselves, indeed put themselves up there with the finest examples of humanly Enlightenment ever known to exist: "Socrates, Diogenes, Buddha, Lao Tzu, Jesus, Nagarjuna, Huang Po, Chuang Tzu, Hakuin, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Eckhart."
Clearly you made the above comment with a sardonic grin on your face, for you have made it clear that you don't respect Philosophy; therefore you couldn't respect anyone who made it their life.
They clearly see themselves as gods, though we may quibble on the definitions. Separate question altogether is whether or not they really are...gods, enlightened, leaders, perfected, and all the rest.
I know you’re just having a laugh with all of this, because you obviously have no real interest in philosophy or enlightenment. That being the case, you have no intention of suppling an answer to your "separate question". You just threw that in there to...what? Make it look like you have the answer? Out with it then.

Brilliant. But could it also be said Women want to destroy the very thing they want to 'intimately connect' with? If she would know her own nature she could even desire that consciously but mostly it seems wrapped in a more sensual or harmless, even intellectual language, the indirect way.

Deibert, I am surprised at your apparent dismissal of my observations of reality by jumping on Sue's bandwagon of "don't listen to her, she's just a woman." I thought you had a respect for Truth. Who are you? I am not asking for your name, but I am asking for a description of your core beliefs.

I suspect there is a lot of sarcasm in this thread, but it is not sufficiently labeled to be a helpful pointer to the Way.

Carl: I have but one recommendation to help humanize enlightenment: look for the moderators' jokes. You should be laughing at what you are saying, not ranting about it.

Why?

It's pretty obvious they aren't gods of any kind. What does this say about how people normally use the word "enlightenment" when a man says "I'm enlightened" and you know he's being arrogant?

Honestly, I don't think the average person has a clue what enlightenment is. They don't bother thinking about reality whatsoever. Nobody I know but me can even pay attention to a metaphysical debate for more than a few seconds. It's not hard to deduce from the simple observation that nobody in my immediate experience has any comprehension of Reality due to a complete lack of interest that I have a superior understanding than most people. The evidence for the contrary claim, that the average person spends most of his days thinking about truth and reality (when neither occupation pays), and hence is as practised as me, is completely lacking.

And since I know enough about reality to appreciate that David, Kevin, and Dan are full of shit when it appears that they are claiming themselves to be Gods... well, maybe they aren't claiming themselves to be Gods? Maybe I'm just as enlightened as them... and enlightenment means something entirely different than most people think it does. Freedom from delusion: I don't have the false belief that "QRS" are deities. I know they are ordinary blokes who are simply more talented than me at some aspects of philosophy.

Now, when you can see that they have to say many things with this knowing (but not offensive) grin on their face... and you can appreciate this humour... you are most definitely enlightened.
