Here's the thing. Yes. most of our values and beliefs come from our mode of evolution. Social mammalian, highly intelligent omnivorous, with complex social coordination between adults and high levels of parental care. All our beliefs and emotions are just a formula for surviving.
When you sense you're not "doing well" within the herd, your logic mechanisms go into overdrive and you start to analyze and discover the reasons why things are the way they are, why people act the way they do. You may "rip" the lid off some norm or more (ay) and expose it as a "mere" survival mechanism. But that doesn't change the fact that it works. Or has worked, and may work currently. You're analyzing. You're in a phase. You're pulling a "corey patrick". You may understand the suble intimidation perpetrated by the alpha male, on his subordinates. Good for you. Want a cookie? He's still your boss.
People doing ok don't get too wound up about the truth. They're too busy having fun, and sex, and feeling pride in their success. In fact, if the truth is discovered to be wrong, by some lunatic fringe named David Quinn or something, then maybe their success was also not true. Hence, we are enemies of the happy. Not by intention, but because our analysis could lead to a change in status quo, if we called bullshit too loud.
So we rediscover the why's and wherefores. Maybe we develop new strategies for our own survival based on this analysis. Maybe we're just too disgusted. A deathrace to control resources to increase our genetically related biomass? Maybe later.
The Real Truth about the truth.

Milli, you are probably right to be so defensive and threatened by what goes on here.
You are young, full of energy, and you know how disspointed mom and dad would be if you don't turn out to be a normal, well adjusted person.
So take those conservative opinions of yours and go out there and make something of yourself. There's no sense wasting much more time on this forum. This place will only weaken you.
Escape while you still can.
Milli, I think you have a sense of not doing well within the herd on this forum, your logic mechanisms are going into overdrive and thus your analyzing and discovering reasons why things are the way they are, and why people act the way they do. You may rip the lid off some norm here on this forum and expose what goes on here as a 'mere' survival mechanism, but that doesnt change the fact that it works, or has worked, or is currently working. Choose "be", corey.http://www.generationterrorists.com/quo ... tting.html
Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed- interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose a three piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing sprit- crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing you last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked-up brats you have spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that?

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die; to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause; there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
That undiscover'd country from whose bourne
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.--Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd. (III,i)

Mill,
I guess you're trying to say that trainspotting is a story with a moral.
Life is either shit on the left (become a junkie) or shit on the right (conform).
The shit on the left is bigger and stinkier (being a junkie).
Therefore, be the less stinkier piece of shit, the right. (comform)
I wonder if shakesphere had to suffer advice from cretins like you?

That is correct. Personal problems cause an interest in philosophy.
I hate the way the dudes around here speak so often as if Truth were some objective non-emotional thing. The only way truth can be non-emotional is via simple mathematics, where the communication symbols are generic by definition.
