I'm assuming everyone is aware the effect that placebo has during clinical trials. Perhaps if you'd seen Penn & Teller's Bullshit Episode on fancy wines you'd figure the same applies to foods. But what about "spirituality", is "spirituality" just a placebo?
One of my subscriptions on youtube uploaded a video about "spiritual energies" and when asked to pin it down, what I got was "its a feeling". This same individual claims that "spiritual enlightenment" can be attained through sexual intercourse. The two seem incompatible to me, to my definition of enlightenment which involves a complete understanding, wisdom and realization of the true nature of reality. This kind of enlightenment is incompatible with the act of intercourse, since intercourse bathes the mind in elation clouding judgement and reason.
Perhaps what they are really experiencing is the same thing we all experience during sex, but with a dash of "spiritual" placebo. Sprinkle a little pixie dust on your philosophy and all of life tastes better. In this same way, one might be convinced that shit tastes great!

Penn & Teller have spiritual views, too. Their view uses tools such as a basic bullshit detector, which gives them the upper hand on faith-based beliefs.

Maybe they're just taking a different placebo than you.
Re: Everything Tastes Better With Placebo
Popular "spirituality" is filled with self-serving nonsense.
Genuine spirituality tends to lead to more difficulties in life, not less.

Re: Everything Tastes Better With Placebo
Because it goes against the general values of society, for one. Most people are not interested in genuine spirituality. That is bound to cause friction, within oneself if not without. Also, genuine spirituality is work. Any work, especially extra to the demands of life itself, increase the difficulties of living.
