More humour, perhaps.
More humour, perhaps.
Really, I read through some of the material on this site with suspended disbelief and astonishment at how corny it is..
Take this classic example from Kevin Solway...
"I had a girlfriend at the age of ten, and within twelve months I felt that I had exhausted the possibilites of relationships with women."
I mean the guys' balls had probably not even dropped, yet he still has the pubescent arrogance to write off relationships with half the human race. What's even more astonishing is that writing as an adult with the benefit of hindsight, he feels compelled to share such

Yeah, some of the proclamations on women and femininity, particularly by Kevin and David, are pretty outrageous. There are legitimate analyses to be made of the whole gender issue and the various irrational ideas involved with it. But Kevin and David go way beyond that, into the territory of making farcical statements. I've been telling QRS for a long time that it hamstrings what they are trying to do here. But they don't seem interested in that view.

Sounds like Lolita gave him a boner, and that was it for him.

Did Kevin happen to mention how old he was at the time...?Take this classic example from Kevin Solway...
"I had a girlfriend at the age of ten, and within twelve months I felt that I had exhausted the possibilites of relationships with women."
My guess is that Kevin and David see quite well the humour in some of what they say, but because their sense of humour is on the dry side and because they don't use emoticons, you're not seeing that.

Kind of like when Kevin writes of his own book as: "probably the greatest book ever written"My guess is that Kevin and David see quite well the humour in some of what they say,
I got quite a chuckle from that when I first read it - wasn't sure if I was laughing with him or at him.

I don't know if you are referring to my Lolita comment with that one, but part of the plot line in Lolita is that Humbert has been scarred from a relationship where both he and his first girlfriend were 10 years old.

Whilst I think there's a serious need for Kevin to add more information to that particular observation, given his experiences as an adult, it is worth noting - in somewhat precise terms - what he said. I'll add my emphasis to make my point:
"I had a girlfriend at the age of ten, and within twelve months I felt that I had exhausted the possibilites of relationships with women."
Re: More humour, perhaps.
How can a ten year-old even have a clue what the possibilities of relationships with women might be? Any way you slice it, it's a very odd statement. "Probably the greatest book ever written" makes much more sense, although remarkably egotistical and readily challenged. At least he has some basis for drawing that ostensibly megalomaniacal conclusion, whereas it's unclear how a pre-pubescent kid could possibly know anything about anything.

Re: More humour, perhaps.
Kevin used the word "felt". I frankly don't know the limits of what is possible for a ten year old to feel. Maybe a precocious little Kev did feel such a thing. However, I personally think he should either add something to that statement to give it value or remove it on the basis of redundancy.
Re: More humour, perhaps.
If he did feel such a thing, either he was obviously mistaken or he was a very "precocious" little kid indeed, so to speak. Illegally precocious, given that there are all sorts of possibilities in male-female relationships I'd like to think 10 year-olds don't know anything about...

And I should be more *precise* in my use of the word "Lolita." I also may have misinterpreted how angry some of the people here get.. and maybe Lolita has a little too much personal meaning there.

Re: More humour, perhaps.
"Lolita" was simply inaccurate given that Kevin was 10.

Then take it however you want, like your precise terms. Maybe then I meant he had stolen the plot line from Lolita! I was being very "loose" with my meaning there, and no I will not agree that the use of "Lolita" was incorrect. The entire first chapter of the book is about Humbert being scarred because of a relationship with a 10 year old when he was 10. Isn't that exactly what Kevin was saying in the quote you have there?
