If all the machinations of philosophical discourse yield the output that there is no meaning because none is required,
Non sequitur.

Freeing oneself of all meaning is a wonderful thing. Don't knock it. It is the very stuff of life.

guest_of_logic wrote:The responses so far have all been pretty vague. Prince proclaims his pet equation without explaining how it relates to non-duality; David asserts that the entire forum is based on non-duality, and trots out a few short sentences that purportedly describe it, but dodges the request for a definition, a description and arguments by claiming that this is treating the matter as a "Western academic issue" whereas according to him "non-duality cannot be understood in this way"; Diebert mentions something about a contrasting black dot on an all-white even surface, but fails to explain the relevance of the analogy; Ryan mentions "jettisoning ... dualistic cognition" but fails to define dualistic cognition; jupiviv tersely declares that to understand non-duality one must transcend it, implying that he has done so but failing to elaborate on what he means.

David asks me, "If you haven't been able to understand these posts in all the years you have been here, then what makes you think that you'll suddenly start understanding them now?"

It's not my understanding of past posts that's lacking, rather the lack is of your definition and description of non-duality. Based on your post, it seems that you use the term "non-duality" either as a synonym for another term as I use it, "the house philosophy", or perhaps as meaning, "that which the house philosophy describes".

I'd like you to explain more clearly why you use that term, though. It's composed of two semantic components, which surely are not arbitrary. Dictionary.com defines "duality" as "the state or quality of being two or in two parts; dichotomy". So, semantically, the term is a negation of the state or quality of being two or in two parts. Could you clarify how this relates to your usage of the term? You could comment, for example, on what it is whose two parts are being negated - what those two parts are and why you negate that there are indeed two. At least superficially, these semantics have not much to do with the descriptive sentences that you trotted out in your previous post.
You have more than enough information to understand this issue. The rest is up to you.

I'm getting a bit tired of having these kinds of discussions at all. Would really rather just chill. But until I figure that out exactly I'll comment this.

I don't know where you're coming from in the second sentence. For the first sentence, all I can say is what I've observed from our talks - that you are an emotional man, and that it seems to me your entire interest in the house philosophy is to find any excuse possible to disqualify it. This isn't necessarily bad so long as an equal amount of time is spent trying to see how it's exactly right. But I don't see that from you. Everything is, "Yes, that's interesting but...", or "But that's not how it should be." Never, "Let my try to come up with examples of how this applies".

I'm guessing this is because you understand on some level that doing this will naturally undermine all motherly, safety and inherent-good feelings of emotional warmth. And also that you would have to admit in front of David and the rest that you were mistaken the entire time. If I was in your position I probably wouldn't want to do that either. Unless I actually was interested in real philosophy, which is putting yourself in full exposure in order to rule over it later. But first things first, of course.

I expect that I'll find problems with whatever it turns out that the non-dual perspective is actually being defined as on this forum, but as I wrote in my OP, I'm not looking for an argument in this thread. I've gone only so far as to say that I don't think anyone's been as specific as I hoped for.
jufa wrote:jufa has given you a definition with explanation, why have you ignored?
I didn't realise that your post was a direct response to my OP. It seemed like you were just talking about topics that interested you - you didn't seem to attempt to define or describe or argue for non-duality in any way. About the closest you got to it was where you wrote, "Come out of your creation, and you come out of the world of dualism; of living from a split personality, and you will stop being the observed, and become the observer."

To be honest, I find it quite difficult to interpret your writing. Your style and grammar are unusual to me. The best that I can make of your message is that you are describing some variant of enlightenment which results in a purity of mind and an awareness of ("a living of") the presence of God. If that's it, then great. I'm all for that.
skipair wrote:I'm getting a bit tired of having these kinds of discussions at all. Would really rather just chill.
Same here. I was about to take an indefinite posting break but figured I'd like to clarify this non-duality thing first.

A few years ago I did something like that, in the thread Common ground. Pretty much all of what I wrote there I stand behind.
skipair wrote:I'm guessing this is because you understand on some level that doing this will naturally undermine all motherly, safety and inherent-good feelings of emotional warmth. And also that you would have to admit in front of David and the rest that you were mistaken the entire time.
What exactly is it that you think I'm mistaken about? It's not my position that emotions should run so rampant that they interfere with one's ability to live a sane life. And you yourself don't seek to eliminate all emotions. So, what, then?

As for "inherent-good feelings of emotional warmth", it's true that I value them. If you want to argue that I put too much value on them then fair enough, but it's not a discussion that I'm interested in having at the moment.

What I, you, or any one think concerning definition and specification is bias to the one who seeks perfect definition and specification because a person cannot draw from any perfection of a subject, object, or matter and define anything unequivocally from within themselves. What you expect of others according to what you think is defining and specific cannot even be delivered, in a conversateion with other by you.

In conversation such as this, relativisim is the best anyone can offer, even you.

What you overlooked in this conversation was your one sided approach to prove your point or disproved others points. Thus statement which define and do not debate are often brushed passed as irrevelant to the directness of one looking at things through a single eye. One true to debate must consider all subject matters and take nothing for granted.

As far as my writing style goes, indeed it is different because it is in the form of abstract usage. To speak of grammar is a runaways used because of a lack of one intellectual ability to go into the depth of the wording and find solace of comprehension. As for the enlightenment part and living in purity of mind, I know nothing about this. My position is always one has to be resonsible for what they put into the soul of thought, for all reach into the soul and take what they believe is an idea, opinion, theory, or concept which will advance them on into singularity of purpose for betterment, and dualism of schizophrenia of mental degeneracy. As you are responsible to you, you also are responsible to those you influence directly or indirectly knowingly or not. You, as I, are our brothers keepers, whether we know or understand this.

Your name says it all. You are, as I, and all mankind, guest of logic, whatever logic is.

Not true. I've had discussions with other people about non-duality and they were able to describe what to them its meaning was in a way that was specific and definitive enough for me. I took issue with what they described nonetheless, but we at least got to the point of clarity of description.
jufa wrote:One true to debate must consider all subject matters and take nothing for granted.
That depends on the parameters of the debate and the nature of the subject matter. There's a reason for the term "off topic".

The point is what is defining and specific to you from any one person and group cannot be the gage for all people. People have different experiences when walking in their own shoes, as compared to walking in your shoes, so you cannot expect specifics and definition on the basis of what you think and have experience. It is not fair and honest to what others have learned and went through. Thus the reason for compromise.

gol wrote:

I agree. But I just would add when statements are made within the parameters of the debate which are not off topic and deal with the subject matter as forms of reference, whether viewed as intellectual or spiritual, or as informative statements to be accepted or rejected by either debator, then no leaf can be left unturned.

Thank you for this honorable discussion.

Nice try, Kelly. It's a nonseqitur because you constructed it. It is easy to take two sentences at random, put them together, and call it a nonsequitur.

If you go back to my actual reply, you'll see that the sequence of sentences was as follows:
KJ: Nondualism is the absence of contrast. It doesn't have existence relative to, in contrast with, or dependency on, anything else.

cousinbasil: Which makes it and those philosophically attached to it like dogs chasing their tails.

Would like to throw these questions out.

If everything is interconnected, then man is connected to everything, why then does man have no memory of this connection before birth?

If all we know is of mind awareness, what then do we know of the awareness of mind beyond our own interpretations?

If duality is an illusion, what makes the issue of living within this duality real in outer objective visions, and inner subjective feeling to man?

If duality is not an illusion, how then is the illusion not seen and objectified to be the same to one and all being all is interconnected?

Are my question worth delving into?

As for "inherent-good feelings of emotional warmth", it's true that I value them. If you want to argue that I put too much value on them then fair enough, but it's not a discussion that I'm interested in having at the moment.
There's no truth out there. You are the truth. The truth of you.
"inherent-good feelings of emotional warmth"
That's Compassion. A way of being for you as truth. It's not something for defining or arguing about.
It's a possibility you step into as a way of Being.
It's authentic you.
It's a declaration.
It's your Word.
It's your Stand.

I don't think you understand the significant of the infinite/non-duality. I can understand being confused about how it's described here. The descriptions were so confusing to me that I flew all the way to Queenstown and Queensland to get a better read on it, as you know. And by doing that, I figured out that what they were talking about is what I'd primarily figured out between ages 17 and 22. The re-questioning of everything made me clearer and stronger, though, so it was well worth it. Living alone in a tent without any friends for a year and half will do that. Epic and highly recommended.

Thing is, you live next to Kevin and you are still asking questions about non-duality. You are so bright, quick and sharp, and yet so fragile and emotionally sensitive at the same time. I've never met someone so intellectual who also radiated so much feminine energy. I accept you as you are, and at the same time I think you would probably discover an amazing new world if you got a punching bag, started eating meat again, and physically let out your repressed aggression, whether that means fighting those Queenstown bar hags or realizing that Jesus probably fucked prostitutes up the ass everyday with an evil grin on his face. IMO, if anyone ever needed bootcamp it's you. And to be fair, if anyone ever needed to do a service project, it's me.

You are made by Life as a possibility of form, formed as you, as your nature, as an existential way of being.
If your stand is compassion, your orientation, it's like a gene got turned on, if you stand in philosophy it's a gene turned on..
It's the truth of you. The contract you have in Life with Life.
It's the authentic you. It's the bullet you can't dodge.
The culture isn't enrolled in this deepest possibility of you.
The culture doesn't nurture the deepest possibility of you.
The culture describes a you for you of adjectives that forces you into a contract with it for it's own ends and calls that 'nurturing' you. It has you on the surface engaging in futile ego battles of attack/defend, self-justification in order to Look Good.
The Culture smashes you like a round peg into a square hole. It has you inauthentic. It has you pigeon-holed, located and limited in it's spider web and feeds on the marrow in your bones, it kills the life in you.
The Yin and Yang of you is authentic/inauthentic...as one..non-dual.

Own up to your Looking Good cunning, your inauthenticity, and step into your possibility/vision for yourself.
What is your Vision?

Kunga: maybe some beings do remember.....but as soon as we are born, we are conditioned and brainwashed... Knuga, thank you for your very good reply. You are correct on the latter end of what you state, but incorrect as to the beginning. Allow me to explain. This is a universe comprised of Spirit forms which must adhere to "the law of the Spirit of life." Consciousness is the Principle Substance and Pattern Essence which is the blue print which Spirit moves over and rise up as the vision of the Principle Substance and Pattern Essence as the forms within the Godhead of the totality of that which IT IS. The law cannot be altered because it is the only law there is. In the realm of Spirit one has to adhere to the consciousness of the Spirit of their thoughts and their thinking, and without a body, there is no matter because there is no material of matter to form a physical body. So all forms are that of Spirit. The reality of living is what one thinks, believes, build, and exist within of that which already is. And with God being Consciousness, and individual consciousness of man, man then become a co-creator of the thought he create of that substance and essence which already is. What man beliefs protray matter as reality, it is then the matter of his thoughts manifest, but not as Spirit. Thus, when one believes in their creation they not only lose discerment, they lose their ability of knowledge as to the reality of who they are,

Jufa: If all we know is of mind awareness, what then do we know of the awareness of mind beyond our own interpretations?

Kunga : There are some of us that are aware of others thoughts.... and know how and why they think as they do Kunga. there are some who are aware of things which appear in the physical world of thoughts, but no one can read or know another thoughts

Jufa: If duality is an illusion, what makes the issue of living within this duality real in outer objective visions, and inner subjective feeling to man?

Kunga: It's after being conditioned to thinking this way after millions of years It is not of being conditioned, it is because from the first to the last you are that which began and continue to live by that which you are. The human DNA insures the conditional pattern of thought within man.

Jufa: If duality is not an illusion, how then is the illusion not seen and objectified to be the same to one and all being all is interconnected?

Kunga: do you mean if NON duality is not an illusion.....Good question...maybe that's why some of us think we are but don't know it (because some parts of

And now the rest of the story. When the earth takes back it dust which formed the outer skin of man, man then takes on a Spirit body like unto the thoughts he believed, built, and existed in while in the flesh. Some stay earth bound, and some has eliminated enough of the human mentality they do not have to return. Those who return has awaken to the reality they are stuck in the cube of their thinking, and the only way to birth forth out of it is to make a promise covenant with Spirit that they, if allowed to return to the world of matter will not only purge themselves of the curse they have place upon themselves, but the curse which they inherited from their ancestors and liberate them from the hell of the human thought pattern. You are the saviour of the linage of yourself and all you came through. And as the buck of passing the human mentality onward was STOPPED by Loa Tzu, Buddha The Enlightened One, and Jesus the Christ, so is the purpose of all who enter into this realm. When one breaks the promised covenant they make to re-enter this realm and redeem themselves and their ancestors, they then have to wait again for someone to come an redeem them.

This is to be accepted or rejected according to ones enlightenment

I'm just trying to get some clarity on how the term is being used. No one bar Kelly has even attempted to provide a simple definition in this thread. David won't even confirm or deny that by "non-duality" he basically just means what I mean by "the house philosophy", or at least what that philosophy points to. Is that all it's being used to mean? It's probably true that I would benefit from improving my assertiveness, which might involve tapping into "repressed aggression", but there's no way I'm going to start eating meat again: for me that's a moral issue, not a health one. Physically I'm in pretty bad shape so yes, something like a punching bag would probably be a good idea. Try to get me to boot camp, though, and you WILL experience some irrepressible aggression. ;-)

There you are with your labels, ready to pounce like a vulture. What chance do you have?

The way I use the term "non-duality" is exactly the same as the way Lao Tzu used the word "Tao", or the way Jesus used the word "God", or the way the Buddha used the word "nirvana".

House philosophy indeed. You need a house as big as the universe to contain this one.

Best of luck to you!
