I was thinking about some of the traits humans evolved to posses that helped ensure the species survival in the past, but is now clearly biting us in the ass. One that stuck out to me was humanities incredible ability to cultivate happiness even in the most dire of situations. I'm sure this ability helped in the early stages of our development as a means to make sure we kept on reproducing, as these basic and mundane tasks probably required nearly all of our collective attention for them to be carried out. If unhappiness were to cause one to focus their attention else where, chances are the species would have died off a long time ago.
Now-a-days this ability mostly serves as a huge barrier against taking control of our destiny as most still continue to focus on whatever brings them happiness no matter how minuscule it is in comparison to all the fucked up shit going on, things like pollution, war, poverty, starvation, and enough nuclear bombs to wipe everyone off the face of the Earth. It seems like the only time humans will truly attempt to forge a new destiny for their selves is when they are pushed to the brink of annihilation. A very risky game humans play.

I feel that unhappiness motivates us. It is when unhappiness becomes the norm that humans start to die off as well as effect people around them.
But on yhe other hand while not many there are people through various reasons react to waht someone describe as unhappiness with indiference.
I am of the former and would like to learn to continuously not over react but because of my history this objective is profoundly difficult.
It would be so great if we ALL could learn to react with calm and love for ourselves even though each culture in the world is different. How bizzare is it that we all want the same thing yet expect to achieve this by utilizing so many different and contradictory ways from each other?
Our level of consciousness is a double edged sword and i believe that because fear the human will stop at nothing short of the impossible to acieve this.
So there is a good chance that we're actually fatalistic and i wish that we could laugh at this notion and joke about it a bit more, a little like George Carlin who says on one of his skits in relaton to saving the planet - The earth aint goin anywhere, you are, pack your shit folkes!

Re: When Evolution Bites You In the Ass
Nick,
I also think part of the problem is that many people have a difficult time thinking about the huge problems because it causes suffering to their ego to just think about it, and it may even cause fear of death, and so people avoid thinking about these problems because it hurts to do, and they feel powerless because they cannot personally do much to solve a large problem on at their level.
And then there are those who just don't care, they cannot be bothered to care because as you say, their thoughts are predisposed in that next golf game, or next vacation, or next sexual encounter. Their thoughts move from one pleasurable stimulus to another, never interested in anything deeper.
Truth has a funny way of forcing one to feel responsible for ones life, that crazy truth!

I don't see any particular reason to be unhappy about anything, no matter how dire the situation. Sometimes things can get uncomfortable, but a reasonable attitude to take is the conscious acceptance of all either/or possibilities. And since all future outcomes are accepted as possibilities, there's nothing to psychologically resist like there would be through denial. From there, there's all kinds of room to take interest and happiness as new things float by.
Of course the problem is that many people ARE in denial or totally unconscious about situations that could stand improvement. It's much easier to forget and go to the playground. Why? Because thinking about shit is NOT COOL. It is perceived by most that those who think are NOT on the winning team. They aren't on ANY teams: not on religious teams, sports teams, political teams, fashion teams, etc. There is nothing left to identify them as people who are winning at something, and therefore they are LOSERS. And meanwhile there is all kinds of FUCKED UP SHIT going on because the few smart people still on the planet aren't having enough kids to smartify and out populate the REAL LOSERS.
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! I feel evil. :)

When people make the excuse that they don't have the power to make a difference what they are really saying is "I consider my self fairly worthless, and if it's the only thing I can change I see no reason to bother thinking about it". People who feel this way are also quick to make sure you don't consider your life of any real worth either. It's ironic because deep down they feel worthless, but still have the audacity to think everyone should be like them.
