Buddhas, Enlightenment, and computers

Post by Glostik91 »

If a group of fully Enlightened Buddhas are able to construct computers that are fully enlightened, is it the Buddhas' obligation to construct these computers?

Can a deluded person construct a fully enlightened computer?

Can an inorganic computer be fully enlightened?

Just some ideas I've been pondering lately.

Only if they're capable of assisting the wise in relieving the world of the ignorance that plagues humanity.

Only by accident.

This probably should be the first question. "Enlightenment" describes a state of consciousness. Only if you consider a particular computer to be conscious in some manner (that we're familiar with as humans) can we apply any descriptions of a state of consciousness (enlightenment, egotism, etc).

Okay, what exactly is consciousness then?

Murder has already been the method of choice for "fixing" things for thousands of years.

You don't kill the ego by killing the body.

There are lots of ways to answer this. One might say that human consciousness is a concept which describes a conglomerate of processes that cohesively form what we call an awareness, and therefore only exists as an abstraction.

Obviously this is not enough for most people. They find too much comfort in their faith in an inconceivable other-worldliness in which their (egotistical) conscious can last for an eternity. But before they can go on believing this, consciousness must first be real to them.

Of course, this is just one tangent one can explore on the topic of consciousness. Consciousness in regards to enlightenment is better described as pure, truthful, non-delusional thought, i.e. a mind uninterrupted by egotism.

I think Jesus might disagree.

So would you say a chimp has consciousness, or maybe even a cat?

Jesus was vicious with his words, but I don't remember him killing anyone.

In what context? If we're talking about a functioning brain then yes. If we're talking spirituality, then no.
