At the time it came out Kevin's Kelly Out of Control made a great impression on me and helped me understand and suspect a great deal more. It's more than a decade old so not as 'revolutionary' anymore as it might have seemed at the time. And I certainly do not share the endless optimism about the future of technology with Kevin but the stuff about hive minds and the "equilibrium is death" is really insightful.
The good thing is that it's possible now to read or browse it online.
Eye opening books
Re: Eye opening books
Byron Katie's Loving What Is is a very significant book as a practical guide to enlightenment. It takes enlightenment out of the airy-fairy notion of being some wonderful but undefined experience and puts it right into your hands. Anyone with an interest in enlightenment would do well to take a look.

Children of the Matrix, by David Icke
In the fall of 2001 the perfect antidote to the post 9/11 trauma and warmongering psychosis in the USA, and a good springboard for me to largely leave the presiding culture, at least internally.
