Michael Moore's new documentary and the demise of Torrents

Post by Ryan Rudolph »

Anyone see the new Michael Moore Documentary yet? Any comments? positive or negative? Is it worth seeing?

Another question, the best torrent search engines seem to have been permanently shut down, anyone know of a decent one left where this doc is available? or are there any other types of file transfer sites available for the leeching of larger movie files?

I seem to recall that Ryan said he works, and has an income in the 30K range. Personally, that's more than enough to buy a Michael Moore film. It isn't doing too well. The hypocrisy is that Mr Moore has made a bundle of cash off of "capitalism," American style. He's had good movies and a downright few ugly ones. I rate this latest of his as a D minus, very ugly. Do not view.

PS - Ryan can try to sell it second-hand, though don't try to hawk it to me. I've seen it and it sucks.

You saw it in a theater, Tomas? It has been out, in wide distribution, only since Friday. Moore hasn't made a bundle off it, it didn't open very big. It's not available yet for sale as a DVD (unless black market). Maybe one of your Hollywood friends sent you a copy?

Dan,

thanks for the link, but I already tried all the major ones, which have clamped down on many of the new release movies. They mostly allow things like old interviews, news clips, and random fragments on their sites. Not entire films.

Tomas,

Moore is a millionaire, and even though I enjoy some of his work, paying for entertainment and art is something I have tried to avoid for years now, and I don't make 30K anymore, probably more like 18K after taxes, but sometimes I still rent films or buy books. I will rent it and burn it if I have too. I might also put up a free FTP server with all the docs I have on my computer. I think high quality philosophical art should be available for free for those who cannot afford it.

btw, I don't think it is healthy to ever totally eliminate the underground networks or individuals who provide free information and media. Its too bad the torrent sites have been mostly shut down of newer film content. Even many of the older films have been taken off.

Idea: why not break into some of the richer homes in your area, Ryan, and take movie DVDs, music CDs, and perhaps even some art off the walls, for your own domicile? Those folks can spare it, and heck, that stuff should be free anyway.

Moore has made a bundle of cash, Capitalism ain't one his best-ever. He couldda put more time into the production side of it. The release date smells dicey, methinks he will be put up for an Oscar. His gay friends will see to that end (no pun intended). He's gotten fat and lazy, his star is falling..............

Much the same with 'Milk', it shouldn't have gone to Sean Penn .. should've been somebody else, but the gay political culture seems a mainstay of Hollywood, I see no end in sight. Payback is hell.

Anyways, I think his work with the musical group, Rage Against The Machine, was his best-ever..

I know, I know, it [the cheapskate jab] was more a tongue-in-cheek humor there ;-)

PS - I've been known (over the years) to ask some buddies for a copy of this-and-that DVD, VHS, CD, LP, 45, cassette etc .. the hell (heck) with the FBI warning .. Hmmm, cranes his head in both directions, just in case :-/

I just seen the movie. It was descent. He didn't go into the inner workings of capitalism or socialism, and he didn't advocate any particular economic system. His main point seemed to be that no matter what system is in place, there needs to be oversight by a democratically elected government body that represents the interests of the most people, and that we can't allow such a massive amount of wealth to reside in the hands of a few.

(I believe it's something like the wealthiest 1% in the USA hold more wealth than the bottom 95% does all together).

When something like this happens, I don't care what you call the system in place, it definitely needs to be changed. So yes, I agree with Moore that too few people have a say in what goes on, and not enough people's interests are being taken into account by those few. I think too many people get caught up in what's considered capitalism and socialism, instead of just focusing on what works best for the most people. Especially those conservative types who point the word socialism at people like a gun whenever some one attempts to make any changes to the status quo. Conservatives conserving, I guess that's what they do.

Because the subject the man talks about is most definitely affecting the country in which you live, and hence your life, big time?

I saw the film today in the theater and was quite impressed. Whether or not to recommend to Ryan Rudolph, dunno, depends what he's looking for in a film. I was entertained, educated, and maddened. That said by one who was already more than halfway familiar with the problems it addresses. Hats off for a difficult subject well-presented.

Capitalism: A Love Story explores the root causes of the global economic meltdown and takes a comical look at the corporate and political shenanigans that culminated in what Moore has described as the biggest robbery in the history of this country--the massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer money to private financial institutions. Did you see his 'Roger & Me' movie? .. then you've seen Capitalism. Considering his financial backer was none other than the Rush Limbaugh- lover John Malone who runs Overture Films and a gazillion other outfits.. Michael Moore is a closet conservative.

The movie was basically about feeling bad for the poor and blaming it on the rich. Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with being poor or rich, so I didn't really see the point of the movie. I guess if you lose your house it sucks, but that's a risk you took when you got it. It's hard to conjure much sympathy when that time could be used to increase skills and therefore odds that you'll be able to keep it longer next time, if that's what you want to do.

It's really up to you to survive and get the things you want out of life. If anything I'd support an even more competitive environment to get people up off their lazy asses, put them into life and on the forward edge of life - keep that glint in their eye. Having government redistribute $ is rewarding the lower class for sucking at business. If you're gonna redistribute money, AT LEAST put it toward improving education so they will actually learn something. Don't just GIVE THEM THE MONEY. I swear to god everyone wants to be a fucking pussy about this.

It's ok for people to select themselves in and out of the population. It's ok to have something, and create the situation where other people don't have that thing. You have a beautiful opportunity to bet on yourself and be a winner, whatever that honestly means to you. It's what we do in this world.

I think the number one cause of home foreclosure in the U.S.A. is insurmountable medical bills. Personally I know a lot of people who have health insurance and they are still thousands of dollars in debt to doctors and hospitals. It's an incredibly inefficient system due to the nature of for-profit health insurance.
skipair wrote:It's really up to you to survive and get the things you want out of life. If anything I'd support an even more competitive environment to get people up off their lazy asses,
What do you think about the guy at the top making hundreds of millions of dollars? Is he really a million times more hardworking than me or you? Hell no! It would probably be physically impossible to be even a hundred times more hard working than the laziest individual on the planet. As it stands it's not about people being lazy, it's that the means by which people must earn a living is working a soul crushing job making peanuts compared to your boss. And then what are you actually making? Chances are it's something the world can do without, so you have to trick yourself into believing that what you are helping to make is some how necessary which allows you to feel just enough pride to continue wasting your life making worthless shit so others can profit from your labor.
skipair wrote:put them into life and on the forward edge of life - keep that glint in their eye. Having government redistribute $ is rewarding the lower class for sucking at business.
Is that really the direction you want to see humanity go? Personally I would hate to see the planet's resources consumed in the name of "business" by eager people waiting to produce jewelry, bombs, designer dresses, SUVs, barbie dolls, and all the other stupid shit people like to blow their money on. I'm willing to say that 90% of the "business" that goes on in this world is a complete waste of resources, money, and human intellect. Aside from that, by increasing competition in the work force as it stands would really mean nothing more than increasing one's ability to kiss their bosses ass.
skipair wrote:If you're gonna redistribute money, AT LEAST put it toward improving education so they will actually learn something. Don't just GIVE THEM THE MONEY. I swear to god everyone wants to be a fucking pussy about this.
What do you think about the idea that as society and technology advance, humans will become more and more obsolete in the work force? We're already witnessing it, and it's only going to gain more momentum. That said, people will be able to put in less and less "work" and get more and more in return. Based on the amount of actual human labor that goes into essential things like food, shelter, education, and health care, if we distributed the labor evenly across the U.S.A's population, it would probably only be required that we labor 4 or 5 hours a week. The main reason this isn't allowed to happen in reality is because the people who are currently profiting from the way things are, are doing everything in their power to keep that from happening.

We live in a world where there is literally no reason anyone should go hungry, yet millions of people die of starvation every year because providing cheap food to people would hurt the companies bottom line. In this modern world, especially in industrialized countries, nobody should ever have to worry about food, shelter, education, and health care regardless of whether they have a job or not. When these things are a guaranteed right of the people we would have a much less stressed out population, and I believe that we would see a huge increase thinking, creativity, and ultimately wisdom. In my opinion having a job gives people the false idea that they are moral, honest, hard working, and accomplished. I say take away people's jobs, give them the basics, and force them to face reality.

Sure, I tried responding a few times and explain my views, but I kept stopping because it was all just sounding like theoretical jibberjabber. I agree or at least am very sympathetic to most of what you wrote, but I guess I'm less interested in yet another political discussion as much as I am figuring out ways to DO something about it. That's basically what my original rant was about. So I'm trying to keep myself accountable for things I can do TODAY, or better yet, RIGHT NOW...and see if you had anything cooking yourself.

If you're talking about changing the way society operates in order to achieve better results, we are limited as individuals in terms of what we can do on a large scale unless you're rich and well connected. I do think there are some key things we can do though.

Write and email your government representatives. I think this has a lot more impact than people realize because regardless of whether the politicians agree with what you say, or if they even open your letter, you are letting them know you are paying attention to what they are doing. I think that when politicians get the feeling that more people are involved and paying attention, they can't rule out the possibility that they might not get re-elected, so naturally they are more inclined to keep the population content. And whether this means listening to your's or someone else's ideas doesn't really matter, because at this point they're just going to do what they can to quell the people's concerns which often times leads to an improvement within the area they represent.

Also if there's any grassroots organizations in your area who's agenda you support, sign up or volunteer with them. If there's a union at your place of employment, join it, or maybe start one up. Organization en masse is essential in bringing about the change you want to see happen. Often times it requires nothing more than a signature as a show of support on our part to give these organizations the political clout they need to make a difference.

Another thing would be to make your vote count. We have a lot of functioning democracies through out the industrialized world, we should take advantage of them.

I know these aren't very exciting options, but they do work, and don't take much time.

Watched Moore's movie for free, naturally, on watch dash movies dot ro.

Moores's always good in overly dramatizing topics and giving you some things to wonder about in the process because of the enlargements, the zooming in on some detail. If someone wants to understand capitalism or socialism, look elsewhere, but if you're curious to people's reactions and an example of the growing distrust in the system, the government and the myths of old, it's worth a watch.

By the way, the example shown of the factory which was owned by all the employees together who made all the big decisions together was nothing more than the communist ideal of old. People naturally give it cooler names nowadays.
