Expansion of the universe
Expansion of the universe
On a recent Stephen Hawkin lecture he stated that the universe is speeding up in its expansion. He didnt give many details or reasons for this. I thought about it and may be well out but I know that gravity alters the flow of time, as the universe expands and becomes less dense what effect would that have on things? Is the universe expanding faster or is the flow of time the factor that is changing? If this is a minor consideration any clues as to what is making it expand faster?
Re: Expansion of the universe
You might do well to ask yourself, why is this relevant.
Re: Expansion of the universe
Sorry was hoping for someone educated to respond. You clearly don't fit that catagory or you might have made some attept to answer any of the above questions.
Re: Expansion of the universe
I did answer your question.
The answer is within you.
The answer is within you.
Re: Expansion of the universe
I'll make an inept to answer the question's.
We don't particularly care about physics here. That's because true genius goes beyond empirical matters; it is focused upon logic and the ultimate truths logic reveals. Under this definition people like Hawkin (Hawking) and Einstien (Einstein) would not be genius, but people moderately talented in specific areas of empirical study.

Re: Expansion of the universe
It's my understanding that we don't really know it's "expanding". I'd guess that he got this from how it seems that galaxies are moving away from each other (faster?).daveyboyz wrote:On a recent Stephen Hawkin lecture he stated that the universe is speeding up in its expansion.
Unless through some theory there is no universe-line.
Time is experience, experience is change - and yet it is the one constant. Our perception of how fast a second hand ticks by seems steady in relation to everything it measures, we designed it to be that way, but the flow of time, the flow of experience itself cannot change. The present moment can't be measured, demarcated, except through the concepts in our imagination. Is the universe expanding faster or is the flow of time the factor that is changing?
Re: Expansion of the universe
Ok well this is a physics question not a philisophical one.
Yes he thinks that the rate at which the matter in the universe is moving apart is accellerating. I guess that even though the density is getting less there is still the same amount of matter so the gravity within the universe is stable, and since we are percieving this from earth the effects of gravity are fairly constant so it isnt an explaination of why the universe is expanding more quickly.
As to why it is accelerating I thought maybe some genius could offer some speculation, and since the forum is called genius forum I thought I might find one here.
To the person above you know that the perception of how fast the second hand has no bearing to time this is merely our convienient measure of it. The same watch ticks at a different rate on the surface of the planet to the rate it would in space because the gravity of the earth changes the flow of time. The only constant being the speed of light.
At least you made an attempt tho, for those of you who answer questions with questions you should become politicians.

Re: Expansion of the universe
That observed red shifts are Doppler effects is a basic "tenet" of Big Bang cosmology. My feeling is that this supposition has never been proven and alternative interpretations/explanations of red shifts do in fact exist. Hubble himself didn't take the Doppler interpretation as a given.skipair wrote:It's my understanding that we don't really know it's "expanding". Re: Expansion of the universe
The idea that inflation is accelerating has no basis that I can discern, and it requires a hitherto unknown force to be active in the Universe. This is why theoretical physics sort of shits me - they just make stuff up, oft' times stuff that can't be empirically tested at all. This is why theoretical physics can only partly be considered scientific.daveyboyz wrote:Ok well this is a physics question not a philisophical one.

Re: Expansion of the universe
Well they already know that there are unknown forces in existance in the universe and they have named them/ Theoretical science is about building theories and models that can be tested against experiment/observation to see if they work and from those observations/experiments deduce how things work.
As to them being proved or not they generally find a way, you know that they proved the earth is a sphere? Can predict accurately the position of celestial bodies etc etc, it takes a long time for theory to become practically applicable but through understanding things progress can be made.
If must have some discernable evidence for Stephen Hawkin to state it as fact in a 2007 lecture, whether proven or not I dont know.

Re: Expansion of the universe
I actually did the opposite of making an attempt. I broke up the foundation to build speculation upon. I do this a lot because I get really tired of living life in the imagination, specifically in that fucking your own mind, mental masturbation kind of way, where theories turn into ideals to identify with and drool upon.daveyboyz wrote:At least you made an attempt tho
Two words: Fuck That!
Re: Expansion of the universe
I was being kind. I actually feel sorry for alot of you people, from what I have seen everyone on this forum speaks either surrealist bollocks or answers a question with a question. Whether all of you deliberately miss the point on purpose or not in every thread it is clear that foolishness reigns supreme.
I bid you all good day...

Bwahahahahaha!
Another one who apparently knows the point! If only one would spare a moment and TEACH ME something. :)

To answer the original question, although the original poster is likely gone..
The universe is expanding or retracting, depending on the directional arc of your consciousness.

Re: Expansion of the universe
Prince,
Based on your supposition there would be no way to empirically validate both the expansion and contraction of the universe because "the arc of one's consciousness" would limit them from doing so. If I take your hypothesis at face value and assume my ability to perceive the universe as expanding or contracting is determined by the "arc of my consciousness", I can only reasonably state it's doing one or the other, not both.

Right. It's doing one or the other. What I was getting at is, as consciousness expands, so the "Universe" the material realm, diminishes, ultimately to nothing at all, because in the light of full clarity, it doesn't exist.Nick Treklis wrote: Based on your supposition there would be no way to empirically validate both the expansion and contraction of the universe because "the arc of one's consciousness" would limit them from doing so. Re: Expansion of the universe
The Universe, whether finite or infinite, cannot expand. Understand this, or understand nothing.
Re: Expansion of the universe
Why can't a finite universe expand like a balloon?

You seem to be speaking from a place of authority and knowing there Dan, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt..Dan Rowden wrote:The Universe, whether finite or infinite, cannot expand. Understand this, or understand nothing.
What is the Universe, and what isn't it?
Re: Expansion of the universe
How can formlessness and emptiness expand (or contract)? It doesn't make any sense to ask the question.

But how do you know it's doing one or the other? Because as you said, you are limited by "the arc of your consciousness" from seeing it both ways.
I guess I'm going to have to ask you exactly what you mean by "arc of consciousness" and "expanding consciousness". Also, consciousness gives rise to the material realm, it's what we live and operate in, and yes it will always exist as long as there's consciousness, because if one is in fact conscious, there needs to be something they are conscious of, e.g. the material realm.prince wrote:What I was getting at is, as consciousness expands, so the "Universe" the material realm, diminishes, ultimately to nothing at all, because in the light of full clarity, it doesn't exist.

I mean internal consciousness. As it grows, the material realm becomes less dense. Arc is maybe not the right word, perhaps the projectile.Nick wrote: I guess I'm going to have to ask you exactly what you mean by "arc of consciousness" and "expanding consciousness". There is the helix spiral that goes up and down, if your consciousness is attached to a spiral that goes down, so the apparent universe increases, expands, goes along with the big bang idea and so on, because the material world itself is expanding, it's offering more, making more, increasing it's hypnotic grip on the mind. It's a salvation for the downward spiralling spirit to latch onto as a sense of upwardness and change.
Re: Expansion of the universe
If you're speaking literally, I'm going to have to tell you that what you're saying is a bunch of bullshit, but if you're speaking poetically/metaphorically I'm going to have to ask you to please be more literal and direct in your explanations if I'm going to have any idea of what you're talking about.
Re: Expansion of the universe
Yes I'm speaking metaphors.
Imagine the consciousness as a very small bubble within an outer very large bubble, being the material realm.
This outer realm doesn't change in size or scope, but the inner bubble can expand with awareness, such that it subsumes, swallows up from the inside parts of the outer bubble in 3D space, it becomes effectively larger within the confines of the larger bubble of the realm.
The inverse is a bubble which remains the same size, or becomes smaller, as the outer material realm eats of it, sucks it of energy and vitality. A symbiotic relationship. But the consciousness being the core, decides which way it goes.
