what you speak of here is interesting... in that, any teaching from any buddha is only ever going to do this, only ever going to play devil's advocate... for there is nothing to say, really, nothing to teach. a buddha helps to remove ideas, not implant them... so he sees what is believed, and works to disarm the belief via counter position, or some other means.

what you wrote above, is true, this would definitely be happening, this illusion... but that doesnt mean you aren't also actually obsessing over women... you and the man who chases skirt his whole life are the same, you are in the same relationship with 'Woman', you cant let it go, one loves, one hates, it is the same thing, round and round.
if you had no obsessive attraction to women, then your thoughts into the relationship of sex & character would have come, and you would have seen them, had some relationship with them, and then they would have gone, like many other thoughts you have had. but instead, they stay... energy is being afforded them, by something you want. this is how peoples desires build who they 'are'.

co&am,

Do you think a Buddha who has removed all delusions in his mind, suddenly becomes deluded by teaching ?

You seem to think that removing attachment to women, in oneself or in others, is impossible.

What has your wife been thinking about lately ?

lets just ignore the fact you openly contradicted yourself there, and remember that truth is not something that becomes yours. you have heard old zen stories etc that ask, what does one gain upon enlightenment? the answer is nothing, truth is there, one does not need to have it to see it. beliefs are 'had'.. the reason they need to be 'had' is because they are untrue, they need to be held up to exist... they are as thin as memory. truth needs nothing to hold it up... the man who sees truth need just look to find it, it is always there wherever he be, he need carry nothing with him. the man with a bunch of beliefs he calls 'truth', which he carries around with him and worries about forgetting etc, this man is just being a crazy human.

no, you miss the point, was a rhetorical question, you were using the kind of nonsense found in gender studies classes as your benchmark.

i do not have a wife and child and job because i enjoy sex, are you twelve? sex is available without these things (and more readily so i assure you)

you have an ugly mainstream concept of what sex and marraige and so forth are and how they relate, you are trying to affix it to my life because you dont know how else to understand it.

dude, it seems tragic to me to let this idea cause anyone to restrict themselves to a life of celibacy, this is just what religions have been doing all along, it is ridiculous... it is just another peach in the world, and a fine one too... if you keep your awareness about you always, what do you have to fear?

yeah, you dont get it. hakuin here is saying, the strength of your zen, or your capability in respect to zen, will be as strong as you have made it. if you practice in solitude and stillness, you will need solitude and stillness to practice. if you practice in the midst of activity, your practice will survive being in the midst of activity.

co&am, I wrote a response, but I deleted it. I shouldn't have to waste a whole post correcting all the deliberate misinterpretations you made in relation to my last one.

I don't have the infinite patience of David in talking to people who constantly lie. From the very first sentence, when you said I contradicted myself (part of knowing the truth is knowing that you know the truth), til the very end of your post, when you guessed (wrongly) that behaviours you don't even know were undertaken to avoid fears and secure already-held beliefs, you did nothing but lie, make false assumptions, and slander me.

Sorry, but you aren't worth my attention.

co&am, I guess I'll give you some justice, and explain myself properly.
i am not deliberately misinterpreting anything.

&

i am not deliberately telling you mistruths.
I have a hard time believing either of these. I looked through the post before I posted it, and really couldn't imagine anyone would make all these mistakes unless they decided beforehand to find criticisms. There was a sentence half-quoted (in relation to my attitude toward sex), and the following sentence ignored: had the whole passage been quoted, its meaning would have been the exact opposite of the way you presented it (it would have shown my indifference toward sex). You took it out of context.

There was a question you posed that was meant to be rhetorical, but I answered it accurately, and you refused to believe my answer (despite it's logical necessity... I was actually thinking of deleting my answer because it was so smarmy and self-evident, me saying "the benchmark are my own norms."). At one point you failed to think of a good response to a question I had (about whether or not what I said really was a "blind stupid assumption"), and instead attacked the accidents of my grammar (which could only be fixed if I wrote more than one draft of a reply, which I'm not going to do).

Also, you lied about what Hakuin said. He only said so much; the rest is simply your interpretation. You had no basis for claiming that Hakuin supports your interpretation rather than mine. (Amazingly, your interpretation allows you to justify any manner of life a person could want, while still making himself feel superior, whereas my interpretation shows the folly of believing that anything goes.)

You also lie about your motivations for being married. If sex wasn't an issue, you quite simply would not be married. Or you'd cohabitate with a man. Any 12 year old knows the reasons people get married, despite all the bullshit excuses they make. Have you forgotten what you knew all those years ago?

There. A summary of everything you lied about. I can't imagine someone saying all of this unless he intended to reach a conclusion that was established before my post was even read. I know this post is a bit aggressive, but I don't appreciate being told things about myself that I know aren't true. I don't mind being criticized so long as I can see justice in the criticisms, but I couldn't see any here. It just seemed mean.
if this is so, why did you use the term 'other than'?
I was excluding the epistemological structure that is needed for a man to have access to Truth, since that is obviously assumed to be present when the man has Truth. You could also assume that I was excluding "a conscious mind", since that is also implied by the knowledge of truth.

In fact, even had I told you to exclude everything that is automatically assumed to be present when a man has truth, except truth itself, I still wouldn't contradict myself. I would only contradict myself if I told you to exclude something other than what is necessary to have truth. (I hope I don't have to go through the trouble of proving that knowledge that one has the truth is necessary to having truth, since I thought that would be self-evident.)

Basically, saying something like "it's necessary to have a conscious mind to be wise" doesn't fly because it's necessary to have a conscious mind to have Truth. Truth, therefore, can be the only necessary condition of wisdom ...even if you "also" need to have a conscious mind to be wise.

ok, but can i start by saying that you are a real dick, man.
you assume wildy all manner of shit with absurd basis and then bitch and moan about what i say, you get all huffy and pissed off and tell me i'm not worth your attention and all this crap, you come on soft and strong... you're emotionally reacting to this debate, because i am irritating the beliefs you use to hide from shit.

here is what you said:

if something disgusts you to the point of distraction, then for you it is not a triviality. you are not 'indifferent' towards sex, you find it disgusting and distracting.

groan..

you entirely misunderstood this.

and i thought you were explaining why i am a liar, not how mean it is that i wouldnt 'believe your answer'.

this one, bottom of barrel mate, should have deleted this one.

i didnt attack your grammar, i commented on an observation i made, on the way you say something is true, and then upon it's being refuted, you say, 'it is true except for this and this', when 'this and this' is often the reason your 'truth' is being refuted.

co&am, I should be embarassed that you managed to pull me back into this conversation. You must really like talking to me, otherwise you wouldn't have said so many lies (very few philosophers can resist correcting lies).
if something disgusts you to the point of distraction, then for you it is not a triviality.
The act is disgusting and distracting, not thinking about it. You can't do something else while having sex, and you transfer bodily fluids. That's all it means. Two people could be having sex in my room right in front of me and I'd be neither distracted nor disgusted. I simply wouldn't join in. I have better things to do.
and i thought you were explaining why i am a liar, not how mean it is that i wouldnt 'believe your answer'.
You were a liar. You asked an insincere question. Don't ask a question unless you're willing to let the answer be different than your expectations. The question was a lie.
didnt attack your grammar, i commented on an observation i made, on the way you say something is true, and then upon it's being refuted, you say, 'it is true except for this and this', when 'this and this' is often the reason your 'truth' is being refuted.
That's an accident of grammar. It does not change the truth of my statement. If I were to write a second draft, it wouldn't appear at all, because I'd have found a clearer way to express the same thing. You're a jackass, through and through. You still haven't responded to the philosophic point I made. Just the grammar. You are being evasive, not clever.
your interpretation of hakuin's statement is really dumb, man.
It's better than yours. Yours justifies any behaviour claiming it "Zennish", and makes you feel superior doing it (since it's "superior Zen"), when really you are just packing trivialities onto your life and thinking yourself grand doing so.
and you are really stretching the definition of that word 'lie' huh
No. A lie is when you deliberately say something untrue. You still do it. And you do it constantly.
it has nothing to do with superiority, or justifying behaviour, it is simply that zen practice will be as strong as the environs it is developed in.
False. It says "Zen practised here is superior" not "Zen practised here is stronger". Zen is Zen, no matter where it is practised. In the midst of activity, outside of activity... Zen is Zen. It's superior in the midst of activity only so far as it's more difficult to find calmness, not because it's somehow more Zennish. "Stronger Zen" is an oxymoron.

You can't see what he's saying because your interpretation stokes your ego, and makes marriage look like a good thing.
oh stop. you are rolling around in your own faeces.

you dont need to marry a woman to fuck her buddy.

people get married for a billion reasons... and here you are, calling me a liar, telling me you know my motivations for getting married better than i do.
I know you don't need to marry to fuck someone, but noone would get married if sex was not appealing. Don't lie. Why aren't you cohabitating with a man? and furthermore, do you have sex with your wife?

Anyway, I would sooner say you're spraying your shit everywhere than I'm rolling in my own faeces. If it looks like I'm covered in faeces, it's your own doing. You need some medicine to keep your shit in your body and under control.
you are going to let a juvenile moronic idea drag you through a life with no sex or intimacy in it, it is some seriously sad shit.
Sex and intimacy is raw ego attachment. She makes you feel good, doesn't she?

You're trying to feel pity for me because I don't give a damn about sex and will never waste my time getting married. I've chosen to be celibate. Just as I've chosen to abstain from drugs of all kinds. There's nothing sad or pitiable about these decisions.
it was, so crap and dumb man.
I think you are the one incapable of coming up with intelligent replies.
me: I know this post is a bit aggressive, but I don't appreciate being told things about myself that I know aren't true.

you: if you know they aren't true, then why would they annoy you? you would think, well, that bloke just said that, but i know it isnt true, so i'm not bothered by what he says.
the truth is, you are getting aggressive in defending your crappy belief structures.
You're the second person I've talked to recently who looked at one of my polite bows and attacked it as though it really is my opinion. Maybe I should stop being polite... it's a habit that I picked up. I don't really care that I was being aggressive, since it has no bearing on the truth of what I say. You're a liar through and through, and this last post of yours just shows me how short-sighted I am responding to you. You have no interest in anything but maintaining your ego, so no matter what I say you will cover it with diarrhea and think it refuted.

Or am I giving you too much credit? Maybe you don't have enough knowledge of truth to be a liar.
where does this bitchy emotional shit belong in philosophical discussion?
"it seemed a bit mean"... play the man, fuck...
God, you are a fucking idiot. You can't take a moment's gracefulness without turning it into a goddamn attack. If it clearly doesn't belong, go with your instincts and don't respond to it. You can safely assume that it's neither a philosophic point, nor meant to be. It could be, for instance, a bow.

(For the record, I don't think "mean" means what you think it meant. I meant that you said a low-brow, crude attack... not that you hurt my feelings. Get over yourself: it, along with everything else you have said so far, was very mediocre. At this point in my life, I don't think someone like you is even capable of scratching me.)
ok this is you grinding out spaghetti justifications for your previous conversational fumblings.
If you understood what I said, maybe I'd consider what you said. I mean, I did say something a little post hoc, and did need to pull out a few uncomfortable words doing so.

But, then again, my point WAS perfectly true. If you look at the technicalities of what I said, I didn't contradict myself. A person must be able to know that he knows truth to know the truth, therefore "knowing that he knows the truth" is not a separate condition of wisdom even though it may appear to be. Since I didn't contradict myself, you were wrong.

Anyways, I must add that it isn't surprising that I didn't contradict myself. I avoid contradictions without thinking about it.

co&am,
I think I overwhelmed you with too much information. Let's try again.

I'll start with a single question. I choose this one because you brought up the issue of sex very early in the debate in an attempt to mock me, and then became incredibly evasive (attacking my grammar instead of my philosophy, and calling me juvenile without justifying yourself) when I turned it around on you and made "blind stupid assumptions" about the dangerous consequences of your own married/domestic/sex life.

Answer truthfully:

1. Would you have gotten married if you were celibate?

co&am,
There are many reasons a person claims to get married. For instance, he will say he's lonely, or he loves the person, or needs the support when he's older, etc. etc.

The thing is, not one of these, when looked at closely, is sufficient to explain marriage. A lonely man can find company elsewhere. A person in love does not need to get married, or even cohabitate with his love interest. A person can easily find support when he's older, through the many social programs designed for this single purpose. Furthermore -- and this is damning -- if you were to remove these motives (loneliness, love, and need for support) from the equation, he may still easily get married. He will find another justification -- or another partner.

However, no man would ever get married were he celibate. He has no reason to, whatsoever. He knows that he can be completely independent, because he is honest with himself. Taken with what I said above, this means that sex is both the necessary and sufficient condition of marriage. Any other reason is entirely accidental.

I'm not disturbed by what you said at all. I think you are holding foolish beliefs. For instance, when I say "I find sex disgusting and distracting", I could just as easily say the same thing about cocaine, or nicotine, or alcohol, and not have an attachment to any of these substances. A person can snort cocaine in my bedroom (and this has occured), or smoke in front of me, or drink copious amounts of alcohol, and I will not join in. Each is a disgusting habit, and each distracts from truth. Because I find each disgusting and distracting does not mean I think about them at all -- just as a non-smoker never thinks about cigarettes even as he would be disgusted by the thought of smoking one. There is no vigil required.

Sex is identical in such a way, except it's consequences are far more insidious and long-lasting: forming attachments with (more often than not, unphilosophical) women and children.

Regardless, the marriage issue is very pertinent to the initial point you brought up. A young child sees no reason to spend his life in the company of girls, who he sees as foolish. Then, when he hits puberty, he realizes that girls satisfy new urges. Not fully believing that sex can be a good reason to do anything, he reacts strongly and forms a lot of extreme, false, beliefs about love and relationships. These can be dangerous when the sex falls out of the relationship, since the continued marriage is based on flimsy rationalizations and lies.

If he were fully honest, and was willing to admit that sex is a complete justification for behaviour, he would not have to invent a bunch of false justifications for things like marriage. Sexual compatibility is one of the noblest reasons to get married (it's far better than, say, convenience). Often, it means that the animal-in-you knows that the children will be healthy.

[On a side-note: I have much more self-awareness than you give me credit for. I don't lie while accusing another person of lying, nor do I try to be superior -- although I do try to maintain superior beliefs, but that is a different issue. If I misinterpret what you say, it's because you explain it poorly and incompletely -- not because I cut you off half-way through a sentence to make what you say match my expectations.]
