Is War necessary?

Post by jupta »

I'm sure this question has been asked before here. My take is:

Warmongering itself is destructive. Destruction is often necessary for reorganisation and rejuvenation, although, whether reorganisation/rejuvenation are themselves necessary is debatable in many cases.

Some people may say that war isn't unnecessary, but inevitable. Forest fires are inevitable. Every year they burn and kill millions of animals and plants all over the world. Are they unnecessary?

Now let us consider that - forest fires are not inevitable but what is the alternative? Land managed by paper companies is not as likely to be ravaged by a devastating fire that wipes everything out. The reason is they expend a lot of energy in clearing the truly flammable underbrush and dead trees. They also cut the whole lot down periodically.

A single tree will grow until it falls under it's own weight. A banyan or fig or oak tree is a good example. The trees that last seem to have one of two characteristics. 1. it grows in primarily one direction, i.e, the redwood trees in California. It primarily grows up. The aspen is another example in that each tree is not real big but it does grow out through clonal shoots. 2. it grows in a unique (read harsh) environment i.e., the Joshua Tree.

Organisations have a lot in common with trees (to me anyway). The primary goal of any organization is to get bigger. Eventually they get so big they fall apart under their own weight. (see GM, AIG, Ford, Roman Empire)

Organisations that last have two characteristics. They grow in only one direction like Weltenburger brewery (est 1050) and Ho-Shi Hotel (est 717). Guinness Beer signed a 1000 yr lease. These companies all do one thing and are not trying to grow out. They also fit in hostile environments (Switzerland, Iceland and Egypt)

One possible answer to war would be a periodic cleaning out of dead / outmoded institutions. The "cleaning" is going to happen one way or another. If it is with war or with voluntary means is another question.

I doubt any organisation will voluntarily disband. There has to be an outside force to make change happen. Until we can figure that out looks like war will always be with us.

So, which is it?

Obama will let us (the serfs) know when he comes back from the G-20 meetings.

And we wouldn't have it any other way!

PS - QRS - what a beautiful choice!

I guess the question you are asking is - "are all organisations and their creation at all necessary?"

If that is your question, then I'd say, no, they are not. If all of humanity were to be enlightened, then economics itself would disappear.

Indeed.

Yep.

And I like your commenting style btw.
