What's a body for?

Post by Elizabeth Isabelle »

There is no inherent self and we are all but pieces of the Totality, but we each are imprisoned in bodies - a form of life-long solitary confinement where we can look out and have some level of experience interacting with the world. Others can mess with our prison cell to one degree or another. We have more or less awareness of what is going on with or within our prison cell, and less or lesser awareness of the world futher away from us.

Bodies were caused to exist and conciousness befell some bodies, to a greater or lesser extent in each, and that conciousness caused to wax and wane in its own time. There is nobody in here but me, never was, never will be, and it is the same for all beings as far as I know.

To an extent, people let as much or as little out of themselves as they choose, be it true or false representations. Some people like to "rattle someone's cage" to upset them - Why? Perhaps because they want to see something real, not something metered out - but stirring up the other person is not really the person but just the amount of causality they can get out of a particular person in that way.

We are alone. Men admire or reject the prison-cell bodies of women and many never look inside the cell. Women are so varied in their tastes that there is no telling what they are looking at. Close friends, distant friends, enemies, aquaintances, peers, coworkers, cohorts, adversaries, neighbors - be they reflections, opposite halves (which is one of the more false constructs because it takes a lot more than two people to really make a whole, but I'll grant it the well roundedness concept), enigmas, tools, those who view us as tools, housings of representations of what we diesire, or what we think we desire, or what would compliment our lot in life are all but potential companions to either pit out prison cell against, shore up our wall beside, or attempt to blend into the same cell block.

We await the prison guard of death to arrive with the key and let us out of our cells, but our life sentence affords little hope at the jangling of the keys. What crime have we committed to place us here? We bide our time and some even expect a judgment day and view some of the time spent as being on trial. The trials and tribulations are part of the sentence because we are all guilty of remaining alive.

This reminds me of a koan:
A nun asked Chao Chou, "What is the deeply secret mind?"

Chao Chou squeezed her hand.

The nun said, "Do you still have that in you?"

Chao Chou said, "It is you who have it."

A fairly consistent piece of writing, except for this:
Some people like to "rattle someone's cage" to upset them... [emphasis mine]
Isn't it more, "people are caused to, or cannot help but rattle...."

Overall, though, I notice your metaphorical essay fails to address in any way the thread title, "What's a body for?"

Any theories? Given the law and order/ prison scenario, what do you think a body is for? Or, do you simply chalk it up to causality, in which case why the dramatic prose?

I meant it in the way of this being the easier groove to fall into - such as "Rain likes to fall down" - although in a heavy enough windstorm rain will fall up or sideways from time to time.

The suggestion in the piece was that the body is for imprisoning pieces of the Totality into solitary confinement for the crime of being alive. Other suggestions of what a body are for are welcome, though.

I guess I was just having a rough night and thought I could pull something philosophical out of it.

You're not serious, then. It's a rant, more or less, a form of expressive art, a poem of sorts.

Hope it helped.

Your probably one of those people who believe's in soul-mates...Adds some more flavour to life, doesn't it?

Doritos taste sooo good, but I wonder what their nutritional value is?

I love your writing...Have you had any books published?

ME,

Dan doesn't believe in soul or mate.

Unless maybe checkmate, or possibly, while at a pub, "check, mate!"

"Soul mate," like many New Age concepts, is an idea cooked up to relieve women of their money in various ways (through romantic movies, astrology services, dating sites, etc). I'm not taking a QRS view here, but that isn't to say they have everything wrong. There are some psychological differences between men and women, and there are people of both genders willing to exploit these differences by selling ideas like "soul mate" to the target audience.

An equivalent nonsense concept targeted at men is all of the "natural male enhancement" stuff being peddled in the media at the moment.

Merely a New Age concept used to milk gullible women?

I believe it's more. I think "soul mate" stems from a simple idea that there is a right mate out there for any of us, that is, someone with whom one would get along, say, for the rest of one's life. Assuming marriage is what one is looking for.

This seems like a reasonable supposition. Odds make it highly probable. Which is not to say it is likely one could actually find this person.
