Who is (or was) Heath Ledger? I've heard the name, but I'm so pop-culture-illiterate that I can't place it.

I guess I might as well allow curiosity to get the better of me and well read the article, then.

I was shocked when I read the news, so that's why I posted the article. He's supposedly one of the young heartthrobs out there. In my book, that is one of the most major celeb-deaths I have read about in a while, and he is from Australia too, so I thought that it would fit right in here at Genius.

It was drugs, apparently. Sad, but unsurprising.

To me, drug abuse is strong confirmation of the view that "life is suffering." People are simply trying to feel good and it ends up doing them in. That's what kind of world this is, and perhaps if more drug abusers realized it, they would also realize that drugs aren't going to solve the problem.

Of course, it's never quite that simple. Easy to say, hard to do. When a certain sort of nirvana is available in a pill or bottle that is no further than a few dollars away, it can be hard to motivate oneself to bother with anything else.

Yeah, I don't think this one is quite at the level of Elvis or anything, but that guy was huge, very young as well. I think his first big movie was the Patriot, and I hated the flick, but that's when he got famous. You'd think they would pick someone without an Aussie accent to play an American revolutionary hero, but he must have been able to hide that drawl well enough, I guess.

Snowbunny,

Be aware that this sort of thread will be locked or deleted from here on in unless it contains some sort of intellectual merit. This forum is not going to become a place for celebrity gossip, despite its title, which frankly needs changing.

Maybe change it to "Physical/Worldly/Empirical Philosophy". A bit more specific and loftier than the current title might imply, but still a step down from Genius Forum.

Interesting though, don't you think, that a person would want to discuss things such as sport or celebrity deaths at a board devoted to philosophy and enlightenment? I can't quite get my head around it, frankly.

Either they are mentally handicapped, or their intentions are a bit more dishonest than they are letting on. Personally, I smell a troll...

But not a word about the investment tips thread? Come on...

You can thank me for busting your balls about this later.

I tried to add some with the bit about drug abuse and the first noble truth. Whether it will amount to anything remains to be seen, but I see no reason to lock down this thread when others just as insubstantial (and arguably more antithetical to the values promoted here) are allowed to stand.

Just my 2 cents - you're the boss.

I haven't actually read that thread. The title automatically makes me disinterested but I would admit to assuming there'd be some worthwhile content. Is it that bad? If so I'd offer the same critique.

Well, it depends on what you view as "worthwhile content." It consists of market analysis, general discussion of making money with stocks, and some paranoid ramblings by daybrown. Until I came in and pissed on the parade, there was nothing reflecting philosophical values in the thread (and quite a bit that was antithetical to them).

The fact that you commented this on a thread entitled "Heath Ledger Dead!!" disturbs me...

oh, okay because of snow bunny the girl, not the actual bunny.. now I have an avatar, but I didn't really put much thought into that handle ahead of time.. You know I have snow out my window, and I see bunnies hopping along from time to time.

The title engaged my admin radar. There are some thing you just have to do however distasteful.
