According to Kundalini, the self is an energy that flows from the base of the spine to the top of the head and has 9 centers of concentration (chakras).
Interestingly these centers also correspond to the place where you generally feel emotions or feelings. For example, the feeling of fear is felt in the heart, similarly excitement is felt in the gut, acute sadness in the throat etc.
A center can become an energy sink if not functioning properly, for example fear can drain you of all your energy, or in a state of excitement you cannot think straight. The goal is to allow each center to become fully functional so that it does not block any energy and allows it to flow freely. For example if you feel anxious, then your heart chakra has acquired complete concentration of your energy (or the self) and all other faculties are highly diminished.
In this view the brain is also a chakra, and not the seat of the self, which is supposed to flow throughout the body like an energy.
The purpose is to allow each repressed and suppressed emotional center to be made fully functional so that the energy is never trapped and flows unhindered at all times.
Keep in mind that energy is not in the sense of energy in physics, I hope people can see what I am driving at.
This description of the self as a sort of aware energy seems to be an accurate description of how I experience myself. How do others here experience their self.

The last sentence should read: How do others here experience themselves?Maestro wrote:This description of the self as a sort of aware energy seems to be an accurate description of how I experience myself. How do others here experience their self.
I think understanding the chakras would help Western medicine, biology, and especially pysychology. They definitely exist, I have seen mine. Traditionally there are said to be seven of them, which makes sense on a metaphysical level. I don't think a day goes by without my understanding deepening of the chakras. You can almost see by a person's mannerisms if there is an imbalance in the energy flow.
I find it shocking that most people forget elementary biology the day they set foot out of high school. I certainly don't expect people to understand what chakras are. That takes a bit of study, but it is more than worth the effort.

Dear brokenhead,
You did not tell if you experience yourself as an aware energy

By see you mean felt rather than see with the eye I guess.brokenhead wrote:They definitely exist, I have seen mine. Traditionally there are said to be seven of them, which makes sense on a metaphysical level
I agree without the knowledge of Chakras it is impossible to have an integrated body mind.brokenhead wrote: I find it shocking that most people forget elementary biology the day they set foot out of high school. No, I meant see. It was under the effect of a dissociative drug, not an hallucinogen. Saw with the eyes closed, but very, very clearly. Not all at once, but one at a time. Not all during the same instance, either. I didn't know what I was seeing, but I am a cumpulsive reader and later stumbled onto renderings of the various chakras, and then I knew. Clearly, either the first depictions or many of the early depictions of the chakras were done subsequent to ingestion of an entheogen. A first guess would be the poppy, a second the Amanita Muscaria mushroom.By see you mean felt rather than see with the eye I guess.

It may be helpful, but it isn't necessary. Certain chakras may be more noticeable, and those will be noted along with their effects. They may not necessarily think of them as chakras; they'll say "my throat is acting funny," or "I feel heat in my gut."maestro wrote:I agree without the knowledge of Chakras it is impossible to have an integrated body mind.

I was saying that enlightenment is not a mere matter of the mind, which is only the 7th chakra, only when each of them is in harmony is enlightenment possible. Thus enlightenment includes the body.divine focus wrote: It may be helpful, but it isn't necessary. Certain chakras may be more noticeable, and those will be noted along with their effects. You seem to be implying that enlightenment is a matter of having one's masculinity (one's mind) in harmony with one's femininity (one's body).maestro wrote:I was saying that enlightenment is not a mere matter of the mind, which is only the 7th chakra, only when each of them is in harmony is enlightenment possible. Re: Self as aware energy (Kundalini)
I wouldn't use terms such as masculinity and femininity. There are seven centers and mind is one of them. The self is energy which needs to flow unrestricted throughout all these.
The unrestricted flow can be compared to nonattachment, one whose heart chakra is not open will become attached to his anger and his self will be confined to days on end wasting itself in this anger. The unattached person will see anger arise and fall away harmoniously in a smooth flow.
Further most people view even themselves through the mirror of their mind (thoughts), thus if they want to clear this anger they will try to redirect the thoughts, which is mostly futile as the anger's location is in the heart. If you experience yourself as a flowing energy, you can redirect your attention to the anger's precise location, (the heart) rather than dabbling with thoughts.
