Hidden Genius, Crouching Stupidity
Greetings,
I've always been good at all sorts of things, but I never seemed to excel in anything, I never really pushing myself to achieve anything special. I never had the motivation to read ahead of the chapter that the teacher told us to read, it was common practice for me not to even read the chapter for that matter. I knew how to read, that wasn't the issue, rather the issue was that once I did learn, I was content with having achieved whatever level I had achieved. So I had to do whatever I had to do and then I'd be happy to get it over with and go do whatever I wanted to do and what I wanted to do wasn't very academically significant. Maybe it was a lack of guidance, or maybe it wouldn't matter... I don't know. What I do know is that at this point in my life, I'm not content anymore and I wish I was different back then. I wish I had the knowledge that I now possess, I wish I had someone that could explain it to me... Maybe it wouldn't matter for I can still remember being yelled at and beaten and told to study. The thing is, I always thought I had the time. My days were long and everyday was an adventure, I loved to play sports outdoors with my friends and just fool around and enjoy life. During school my favorite part was recess and again fooling around with my friends in class and annoying the hell out of my teachers. There were teachers who put me in special classes with these odd looking "weird kids" I guess it must have been put in such classes to give her a break from me or maybe she thought I had something wrong with me. I was once held back in the first grade and separated from my best friend, I quickly completed all the assigned work and behaved properly and then after a few weeks or so of being a good student, I was admitted back into my own grade. Maybe they knew nothing was wrong with me, but they knew I was lazy... One teacher wanted my parents to sign me up for the gifted program, but that would mean more work which I didn't like. So yes, I had many such opportunities, but I never understood their worth. It never occurred to me that I'd get one and only one shot and that's it. I let it pass me, while thinking about the less important things at the time. It's funny because back then all the most important things to me are the least important now in the twenties.
Anyway, I need to believe it isn't too late to achieve great things. I don't want to be another average joe. I want to make something great out of my life and out of myself, something that I could be proud of at an older age while I'm reaping the benefits of a life well spent and of achievements well deserved.
My quest brings me to this place. Maybe it's true and some ads do advertise the truth or am I wrong and this place is a sham? Have I come to the right place... only time will tell, however, time isn't exactly on my side if you know what I mean. On to the questions:
1. How can I better my chances at regaining that which I've never gained in the first place?
2. Where would I be able to learn how to learn more effectively?
3. If I once had it in me to become a real genius can I somehow reawaken that capacity or is it too late?
Basically, I want to do the next best thing from going back in time and getting a second chance at academic excellence!
As you can probably tell, I even lack the questioning capabilities. The truth is, I want to become as smart as possible in the shortest amount of time... What can you offer me that will put me that much closer to achieving these goals of mine?
...There must be something especially in a place like this. I hope I'm not wasting our time.

Re: Hidden Genius, Crouching Stupidity
It seems you have not read much here or you would know that we define genius not as being smart but as being wise. Big difference. You might best get online or to your local bookstore for that sort of tutorial if your main focus really is how to improve your ability to perform academically.

If you are seeking excellence by perfecting your character, which requires eliminating the crassness of the ego, and boosting your overall emotional intelligence, then wisdom/truth is necessary. And this is what GF specializes in. The moderators are not as concerned with academic excellence. They focus more on character excellence - on becoming a rational and moral thinker.
However, if want you desire is empirical excellence in the academic world then I can give you a few tips, even though it is straying away from the primary focus of GF,(but be warned: I have not achieved anything significant in the empirical world) (these are only the habits I resort to if I’m trying to understand a difficult empirical theory) (some of these techniques may not work for you)
Isolate the empirical discipline(s) that you’re interested in mastering, this would be the subjects that you value the most, and believe are very important to humanities future, so when you learn something, learn through the filter of how important you believe the subject is. Moreover, a subtle passionate interest causes the hippocampus to store what you’ve learned into the long-term memory – Also, expose yourself to the greatest thinkers in your chosen discipline, and then take their ideas, and try to create visual models to help you grasp the more difficult concepts. Try to understand how scientific theories can be used to manipulate the natural world for some end, whether it be inventions, technology, or what have you. Realize what you are interested in, and what you have a natural gift at, and consider that road first. Read the material over and over again, while creating models, keep a journal of empirical models for quick reference, repetition has value, plus pose questions to yourself and others. Sit on those questions for weeks, and ask them again, only in a different way. Ask the same question in a different way through a slightly different angle. Also, do thought experiments in your head, while manipulating empirical variables.
Use analogies. Compare what you know and how it is similar to what you don’t know, and use your intuition to fill in the blanks, and then check to see if you were correct.
Find others that share an interest for what you are studying and bounce ideas off each other. Work through a long-term vision in what you are studying by identifying the small causal affects that you can have on the discipline. See yourself as a tiny causal piece of the puzzle.
Even creating a theory or philosophy that is partially incorrect can result in someone else coming along, modifying it, and creating something of higher value. Be open to the idea of creating a well-thought out, yet incorrect theory that can be improved upon by others. This is how the empirical world works most of the time. You may get no recognition for your work, but you may end up being an essential cog in the progress of that discipline. Many great scientists are unheard in the mainstream world, and yet they have created some of the basic theories that have made our lives much easier. Scientists always piggy back off the work of previous thinkers. Every scientist is dependent on so many discoveries before him, so he gets good at learning how to skip what he doesn’t need to know, while focusing on what is relevant to his unique focus.
Find a teacher that is simple in speech and thought, but is able to convey complicated ideas in an understandable way. Respect the ones who trail blazed before you, allow their consciousness to merge with yours. Absorb everything that was them, and keep moving on. Expose yourself to written work, animation and video lectures of the same material you are trying to learn. Repetition is key. If you don’t understand something, don’t skip it, research it from a different angle until it makes sense.
And above all, build up a mental tolerance to prolonged study, and learn how to prioritize your life. The pursuit of greater knowledge and wisdom should take precedence over the more animal/sensual aspects of existence. That is not to say you cannot enjoy the more subtle pleasures of life, but know how to balance your time according to what you believe is important.

Wow, towardsprogress, if nothing else you gave Ryan a perfect opportunity to express himself at length on subjects about which he obviously cares deeply. Bingo. Look at the essay you prompted!

Ryan Rudolph: Wow is right, thanks man! I will respond as soon as I get some rest (work), there's a lot of info there and I'd like to examine it careful, so I'll respond in a few hours or most likely sometime tomorrow.
Thanks again!
Carl, I don't see much of a difference between being smart and being wise. If there is a difference, it looks small and here's what I mean by that:
A little kid could be considered smart and yet not wise. An old man maybe considered wise but not smart. Doesn't that sound odd? Couldn't we say that the kid is considered smart because he is more wise then the rest of the kids his age? The two terms (wise and smart) definitely overlap and I can't think of them being separated in any situation. So again, back to that example - the kid is wise for his age and being smart allows him to be wise and the same thing goes for the older wise man.
Thanks again!

Your response shows some smarts but it sure as hell ain't wise.
Again, sounds like you haven't taken the time to read much here, or you wouldn't be framing your inquiries in this way.

So, just kick back, and await the arrival of the messiah, aka The Enforcer, he'll set you straight on what and where you need to go, in effect, get your head on straight. He also goes by the name of Dan Rowden...
What am I saying?, Total Egress - sometimes these 'cool cats' (David, Dan, Kevin) will fade off and watch (observe) what we wanna-be-enlightened folks are doing in the litter box of life.
PS - There are a few (maybe more to the nth degree) over the years - that have abused this Genius Forum website - and have been summarily dealt with, executed if you will, never to be heard from again. After a day or two of grumbling from some of the usual suspects in these parts, "life" returns to normal (a physical day or two of sleep does the trick) all is well!

Hi there TP,
(No disrespect intended, as per its colloquial use as ass-wipe)
Being smart is knowing stuff. Being wise is knowing Who you are, and I don't mean ones definition of self in terms of relationships or accomplishments, as per getting smarter... seeking a "new.improved self."
Are you more interested in the classical definition of genius (and wanna have another try at it via the genius coaching already received here) or are you at all interested in enlightenment?
The latter requires absolute surrender of your "definition of self" into selfless unity with "the nameless One", the omnipresent consciousness/identity in all individuals/forms.
(My $.02 off the top.)

Re: Hidden Genius, Crouching Stupidity
Basically, I'm seeking ways which will give me a noticeable brain upgrade. Hence, I eliminated or reduced the following foods/groups from my diet:
*Dairy
*Meat
*Eggs
*White flour
Fish, addition nutrients (vitamin/mineral supplements), other supplements, organics, etc... Are all good.
Rigorous exercise is another must - both physical and mental.

Towardsprogress,
Due to this trend, getting your Omega 3s from Flax seed oil is probably the more ethical choice compared to Cod Liver oil....
Dairy, white flour and yeast are very popular foods that tend to cause allergy responses and digestive problems. However, eggs and meat aren't harmful, especially if one drinks a lot of water to flush out toxins from commercialized farms. I would also go on to say that meat is actually required due to our evolutionary history. And I personally prefer chicken and beef products over fish, only because the fisheries industry is in danger of vast amounts of extinctions as India and China industrialize. On the other hand, despite a bit of environmental damage that can self-correct, domesticated farms where beef and poultry are raised take the stress off the endangered fisheries species.Basically, I'm seeking ways which will give me a noticeable brain upgrade. "Separate self identity" is an illusion... ego's dream. Awakening from it is enlightenment. You are still dreaming. Here's hoping you actually take an interest in the quotes (from enlightened ones of all major Traditions) in the link. It could be the bucket of cold water in the face you seem to be asking for in this forum.
Ps:, re: "Btw, who wouldn't like a brain upgrade? Even the most beautiful women in the world wouldn't pass up a chance of becoming even more beautiful.'...
I'm happy with the brain I was born with. Filling it with info is another matter, guided by ones interest and intensity/focus in pursuit of it.

I've shared this link on "selflessness" here before but it will be new to you.I know who I am. I am whoever I think I am. I am whoever I say I am!...
I'm pretty sure everything has something to do with the ego. For instance, trying to rid oneself of the ego is actually egotistical in nature. Secondly, I'm not sure how it can be done, without "unintentionally" killing oneself. So, yes, obviously it is "egoic".
