Aussie Open
Wow, this is astonishingly disappointing!! I guess the people here not only have problems with women, but they have problems with athletics as well. I don't know if they are living near Melbourne, but that is like the biggest sporting event of the year over there in Australia. I'm even into it, and all I get are reruns of matches where I already know what the results are going to be. Right now, I'm watching Sharapova defeat Henin. I just hope I will get to watch the semis and finals live.
On the men's side, down with Federer!!
On the women's, I'm all about the hot one Hantuchova. She's hotter than Sharapova, but she has never won a major tournament. This could be the year!!
In all seriousness, not one thread about sports, you've got to be kidding me!!

Re: Aussie Open
The reason for that is even though this is the "Worldly Matters" forum, this board is till quintessentially a philosophy board and there's a limit to what will be permitted to exist. Sports discussion doesn't cut it. There's a trillion places where you can go to discuss such things; this isn't one of them.
Re: Aussie Open
Sports? Not that you need it, but you've got my blessing to shit-can this one with extreme prejudice. :p
I don't know what you think, but in my view "Worldly Matters" need not equate to "Totally Mindless Matters."
Or maybe it's just that I happen to friggin' hate sports...

Re: Aussie Open
I don't mind some sports played at an elite level, but I don't feel any need to discuss, nor see any value in discussing the nitty gritty of it on a philosophy board.

Heh, yeah.
I always thought that "Worldly Matters" was for discussing things like physics, sociology, anthropology, politics, etc., not celebrity gossip and sports. :-P

Re: Aussie Open
That's the idea, for me anyway, which is why I think the subtitle may need rewording. Mind you, there are elements of the nature of sport and or celebrity that do fit the intentions of the board. "It's a tragedy that Heath Ledger died" doesn't quite make it.

Now you are hurting my feelings, Dan. I think you could shut down the vast majority of the threads here, but you are simply abusing your admin powers with all these threats about nothing.

Re: Aussie Open
I don't much care about your feelings, to be candid. Some threads in this forum hover on the precipice of banality; others lean over as if threatening to jump but wave their arms around enough to save themselves; others just jump off without a moment's hesitation. It's basically the difference between analysis and understanding and simple gossip, Bill. I will actively discourage the latter. If you want to discuss the causes of the death of people like Ledger or why people like sport and what its value might be etc, I have no problem with that. But there's a standard - that is admittedly somewhat personal and arbitrary - that has to be upheld here, otherwise we'd end up with the place full of snot-nosed teen and women's magazine issues. We're not about that.

Okay, now I'm getting confused. If you have the Ip's, then you would know that I"m not the Bill guy posting here. Are you getting paranoid about Trolls, and now you're threatening me. But I'm not really going to cry about it. I just move on if I don't like a message board.
Re: Aussie Open
Right on schedule. Part of the"fun" of running discussion boards is that you can hardly take any kind of administrative action to safeguard your vision for the community without someone reflexively screaming "abuse of power!"I think you could shut down the vast majority of the threads here, but you are simply abusing your admin powers with all these threats about nothing.
It's part of the reason I got out of the board-running business for the most part. It's only amusing to hear such charges the first four thousand times.

Well, I don't think that he closes too many topics. If he is going to close something just because it goes off topic, then he really should close every thread. I guess I should try to put something to do with philosophy in the title, because that has more to do with the concept of the forums here. It didn't seem very rigid at first, but now I know the rules better, so I can make do okay.
Re: Aussie Open
That was a very reasonable response, snow bunny. Dan, you got thrown a softball there! I'm jealous. I can't recall having anybody react that way on a single occasion. Invariably they would argue with me and insist that I was a censoring authoritarian fascist dictator or the like, which would usually escalate until they got thrown out on their ear (which naturally resulted in further complaints from others)... LOL.

The email address in your profile is ******@etcetc I assumed your name therefore is Bill. If you want to be known as "snow bunny" then, well, I'd rather not call you anything at all.snow bunny wrote:Okay, now I'm getting confused. Give it a rest. I have not called you a troll; I have simply tried to clarify for you the intent and standards of discussion here. Relax. Are you getting paranoid about Trolls, and now you're threatening me.

oh Okay. I didn't think you were referring to my email address. I would prefer if you edit your last post not to include my name. If you won't do it, whatev, I'll be okay. I use an alias for a reason, you know, not that I am particularly attached to snow bunny.

I suggest if you want that level of anonymity that you change your profile to not show your email address publicly.

Re: Aussie Open
I haven't played either in a while, I just like watching most sports when I am able to.
can you still see my email address? I can't see anyone's, but I haven't really tried that hard to see if they're open to the public. I did change one setting, so hopefully that did the trick.

yeah - you're hidden - but we all know your name is Bill now. No big deal, there must be one Bill in every 35 people - so that's close enough to being anonymous

Re: Aussie Open
Let me try to add a little bit of intellectual thought to it for all the sticklers out there. Maybe not *intellectual* thought but, my intellect, and things I've talked about. There is privacy and anonymity, privacy is where you are all by yourself, and so you don't have to worry about anyone else. Anonymity is where you are surrounded by many people, but no one knows you, so you don't have to worry about anyone else. They are very similar in many ways, and you can run into problems with both of them, about being lonely, but I think the idea that anonymity can be just like privacy, if you are living in a city, is an interesting one. Also, maybe there is a better word to use there than "privacy."Elizabeth Isabelle wrote:yeah - you're hidden - but we all know your name is Bill now. With privacy, you are the known entity but what is attributable to you is unknown. With anonymity, the attribute is known (be it a comment, an action, or a bomb) but the person associated with the attribute is unknown.

I'm going to buddy up right next to you, because you knew exactly where I was going with that one. And, now maybe it's in the better terms for a philosophy board, certainly sounds better they way you put it.

Re: Aussie Open
Yeah, I like "privacy" of a sort as well. Although my real name is public knowledge, I still prefer it not be used on forums, simply because I feel more at liberty to be bold and honest in discussions when I'm "getting away from myself" a bit, so to speak.
