Is the reason why Buddhism places reason above all.The Buddha:
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.
Here is a .edu link for the above quote and commentary by the professor where he notes that
The lesson here is that whether today or 2500 years ago, within any collection of people, one finds those susceptible to suggestion at one end of the spectrum and those who question everything at the other. For those of us schooled in the Age of Enlightenment and attribute the impetus for all of our scientific advancement to discoveries and social changes in the 18th century, it is instructive and humbling to remember that there were teachers of critical thinking like Siddhartha Gutama who preceded the European intellectuals by more than 2000 years.
And where did Christianity said that reason is above all. It is all about faith and dogma, fucking hell it fought Galileo and is fighting evolution now. Please back up your claims.vicdan wrote: Dude, xians also claim that xianity is the essence of reason. in fact, they claim that reason is impossible without xianity. That doesn't mean diddly squat. x
Well actually Tibetan Buddhism is full of symbolism and arcane rituals, Zen is closer to Buddha's spirit by focusing on the basics and not fooling around, with metaphors. And what makes you think Zen Buddhism is more authentic than Dalai Lama's Tibetan Buddhism?
Dalai lama version of Buddhism is pablum is for the American media than anything else. It is not even Tibetan buddhism.
I told you it is psychological suffering.Vicdan wrote:You can't even decide what you mean by 'suffering', and yet it's my fault for arguing 'vague notions'?!.
