Can there be an enlighened comedian?

Post by Ryan Rudolph »

Guys like George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, Lewis Black, Christopher Hitchens, BIll Maher and others have all had moments of truth in their acts.

Moments where ignorance has been made a spectacle in a somewhat critical, yet witty and playful manner.

However, does the comedian always dilute the truth by the use of emotion and use of language?

I think to some of the common tricks of comedians that are used to cause a laugh in people, and many techniques are used as a manipulative science on people:

IE: "The exaggerating impressionalist", "the shocker and surpriser", the word man using puns, "the digusting storyteller", "the violent angry fool", and many more character types and behavior types are used because comedians know they work on people.

So the problem becomes - because comedians know that certain things work universally, their acts slowly evolve to appeal more to the herd mentality, and less at challenging people.

You would think the more whole the comedian, the more often he would probably get booted off the stage for people becoming upset, and irate.

Any thoughts?

Can there be an enlighened comedian?
Yes, there can be an enlighted comedian.

However, he or she will not be able to make a living telling absolute truth, because:

1) People don't want their deepest delusions made fun of.

2) People tune in to comedians for entertainment.

3) The absolute truth isn't funny.

stress is suffering...one who can relive stress makes for a less stressful world..at least for a while...like a cup of tea......i think a healthy sense of humor is absolutely nessesary ...to be bound up in the ego and not release from it via laughter is like being constipated with ego-shit...lol

I don't know about that Carl....Are you sure?
Actually, I've often thought it was supposed to be. Of course, that implies Intelligent Design.

Anyway, so far as "enlighened" is defined here at Genius, what do you think Kevin Solway would say?

I think so too.

...Never! ..however, it does imply comedic design. :)

Carl,

you're first response was actually pretty good. I would think that an enlightened comedian would have to dumb down a portion of material and not deliver it as pure truth, because then the audience would become offended and uncomfortable.

A comedian is a diplomat of sorts. He circumvents certain issues due to motivations of self-preservation.

Yes, I've thought that about Bill Maher for a long, long time. he straddles the fence, half-Jewish and raised Roman Catholic. Nothing like covering all the Zionist bases, including being a regular at Hugh Hefner's Playboy mansion. Watched a video where Chris Matthews and Alec Baldwin (both Roman Catholics themselves) were the guests on his last show of the season. Bill Maher strayed from the party-line and announced some sort of conspiracy regarding swine flu shots .. both Matthew's and Baldwin gave Maher the dirty looks (evil eye) so Maher then realized his mistake. We'll see if he's picked up for another year of "programming" Ryan, Cory and other Canadian elites.

Seems Bill Maher and Glenn Beck are of the same mold. Both druggies and drunks.

You cannot even compare Maher and Beck.

Bill Maher is much more rational in thinking than Glenn Beck. Beck is a hysterical walking contradiction most of the time. Maher can a least get through a show without crying, becoming angry and paranoid. Maher makes better arguments, watching beck is like Like watching a hormonal woman trying to make sense of her place in the world.

The end result: just a lot of crying, and fantasies to be soothed by her mother's voice.

I watched about 10 minutes of Beck at a neighbor's home, I was/am not impressed by his brand of entertainment.

I've read some (not so flattering) internet bios of Beck. Born in 1964, his parents divorced when he was three (3). His mother drowned when he was thirteen (13). He then drifted off into Jack Daniel's whiskey and various drugs (prolly cocaine, LSD and maryjane in high school.

Bounced from job to job in radio etc. Got a gig on television and he was a "natural" with his schtick. I found him rather dreary (as with Bill Maher), but in the entertainment industry it seems to have you watching on a semi-regular basis, huh? That's all programmers want is controversy, but no solution :-(

Is this any unlike yours' and Cory's recollections you and he have on Genius Forum (about your teen years)?

It's tough sledding in the formative years without a parental structure to guide you.

I volunteer on a regular basis in Domestic violence and homeless shelters. Rather than bitching about Maher and Beck's left/right fluff arguments .. how about getting out in the real world and make a difference?

Armchair quarterbacks are dime a dozen....

PS - Can there be an enlightened comedian? .. Let's here your material ;-)

Good for you, Tomas! ...That's an excellent suggestion.:)
...yeah, bigotry toward women isn't so cute when you see the damage up close and in the flesh.

Carmel:
yep...and speaking of quaterbacks and bigotry, I read once that there are increased reports of domestic violence against women directly following (American)football games. The ensuing testosterone imbalances can cause some men to become violent.

Victim In Fatal Car Accident Tragically Not Glenn Beck.
From: onion news network.
Honors student Rebecca Bunten died in the crash today, leaving the nation to wonder why the grisly experience of burning alive was not reserved for Glen Beck
