No.
My reply was about one who can't plunge into the ocean, but who is capable of going for strolls through a thick fog. Both ways lead to saturation, but the latter takes a lot longer.
I'm not talking about the person who wants to stay completely dry.

Elizabeth: It is not possible to have good communication skills with others and not have any idea what others mean by what they say.
Perhaps try to take my meaning less literally. I don't know that other people even exist. Whatever meaning words have, is the meaning they have for me, whether i label them as coming from "others" or coming from "myself".
People are only images in my mind.
Since you know what you mean, you are probably communicating fine with yourself, but you are not in good communication with others.
Again, it is impossible for anyone to know what anyone else means. No one can get outside their consciousness and experience the meanings of others.
One can only know the meanings one creates for oneself. This is true for absolutely everyone.
As for making sense, perhaps you make sense to yourself, but often you do not make sense to me. That is the motivation for these and previously asked questions.
Well, let's hope this is true.
A nonconformist is one who refuses to conform. Not being herdly is not doing things just because the herd is doing them. One could be non-herdly and still do what the herd is doing but for their own logical reasons, whereas a nonconformist will do things jsut to be different from the herd - whether these things are to their ultimate benefit or not.
The opposite to a herd-minded person is a genius. A genius can't conform to herd-mindedness by definition.
Kelly Jones wrote:Pardon me, but your second-to-last statement above, regarding dialogue, indicates that you believe truth is arrived at through consensus.
Elizabeth: You said above that you had no idea what anyone means by what they say. It is obvious in this that you have no idea what I meant, yet now you are insisting that you do know - and your "knowledge" is incorrect.
There's two points here. The first:
You've decided that "i don't know what anyone else means" should be defined as "i am unable to define the meaning of what anyone else says". But i meant, "i am unable to know what meaning anyone else gives their words, but i am perfectly able to know what meaning i give to any words".
The second point
directly leads from the first point:
The truth or falsehood of any statement is not arrived at through consensus, for the reason that no one can know what anyone else means by their statements. The belief that people can know the thoughts and meanings of other consciousnesses, by somehow leaping outside of their own mind, and therefore arrive at truth "by consensus" is unrealistic.
In Ft. Pierce where I grew up, somebody shot the ice cream man. At first there were over 20 witnesses. After a week or so, all of the witnesses had decided that nobody had seen anything after all. I would not say that was the truth, even though it was the consensus.
If we wish to look even more closely, this example doesn't show consensus, because we know that each individual, in the privacy of his or her own skull, decided to believe the voice of "the others", and to squash any disagreeable memories. So, again, there really is no such thing as consensus.
But it's a good illustration of the point i'm currently making: that truth is arrived at within the privacy of one's own skull.
Kelly Jones wrote:i won't be rephrasing my use of "abuse". I don't wish to alienate people unnecessarily, but i think it's important to confront it.
Elizabeth: I don't feel alienated. I think that your using the word "abuse" like you do makes you sound silly and naive, but it doesn't alienate me. For a little while I was wishing that someone would physically explain to you what abuse really is, as sometimes that is the only way to get the concept across -
This got me to thinking. Why it is that you regard hurting the body as more abusive than lying and other intellectual violence?
and all they would have to do is bring a copy of your posts about "why women like abuse" and they would legally be off the hook,
Do you believe that it's sane to correct lies?
What if correcting the lies caused the liar to feel very angry, because they liked lying more than being truthful?
Perhaps i should mention, just in case it hasn't occurred to you, that any individual who is dedicated to becoming enlightened and free from attachments is
necessarily going to experience extreme psychological suffering. There's no way around it.
Given this, the will to truth in oneself or others, needs all the support it can get, rather than punishment for trying to pull people out of the jaws of ignorance (feminine-mindedness).
but this would be an instance where it is better to not have an attachment to truth.
In the example given, yes, a liar trying to wreak revenge on their benefactor would certainly think so.
I accept that you may have to remain ignorant of the true nature of abuse, and simply think that you are being abused.
It comes down to values.
If physical comfort makes more sense to you than wisdom, then, sure, what i'm doing will seem like abuse to you. And, it'll seem to you that i'm lying when i declare that anyone who loves socialising, love, and being the centre of attention is actually abusing wisdom.
I'm not saying you'll always hold these views. It's interesting to read your declaration that you value logic, reason, and understanding Ultimate Reality.
I've never equated physical discomfort with wisdom, by the way. But i do equate intellectual discomfort with wisdom.
I find it a tragedy that you think you are being abused by seeing people hold hands and other things of that nature, but some people like tragedies. You may be one of them.
One outgrows the excitements of comedy and tragedy when one becomes a man.
Such a person is free from trust or distrust in people, because he has willed his mind to reason and lets it take him wherever it leads.
