Enlightenment?

Post by ThroughAir »

This word is thrown around on the internet all the time. I see it in this forum and on other forums connected with religions. Enlightenment. I have read it everywhere. Not actually everywhere, but its usage has grown to be of much curiosity to me. I would like to know, how does one go about becoming enlightend?

Actually the term enlightenment is only "thrown around" on this forum by a few people, most notably, unwise. Do your best at avoiding his mind numbing garbage. Anyways, to answer your question, enlightenment is freeing your mind from all delusion.

Actually, Nick, I didnt ask for your opinion on enlightenment. And also, the term is thrown around, why wouldnt it be? If you didnt know....the term enlightenment is extened to sites and forums beyond this one. If you feel that I am wrong, google it.

I didn't give you my opinion, I stated a fact. Also, I said the term isn't thrown around on this forum. I don't read many other forums so I wouldn't know how the term is used elsewhere.

Depending on who you ask you can get vastly different answers of what enlightenment is, and how you get it. Some people don't even believe it exists or is possible. In the past I equated enlightenment with having the knowledge of what is ultimately real and ultimately true, but once I found this knowledge I decided that the word enlightenment was generally not suitable to describe what I had found.

i am curious to know if enlightenment as 'genius' as used on this forum is the same enlightenment as that in hinduism's various yogas and buddha's awakening

is 'genius' equivalent or equal to eastern tradition's

self realization

god realization

awakening

moksha

is freeing the mind of delusions the same as

" Enlightenment is the experience-nonexperience resulting in the realization of one's transcendent nature - which exists beyond time, form and space."

Yes, that's the way I see it.

Genius is the ability to see reality. So the perfect genius is the perfectly enlightened Buddha.

The mechanism of ordinary genius, the finding of connection between things, is the very same mechanism for finding enlightenment.

I'd recommend reading Otto Weininger's writings on genius in this regard.

I wonder what happened to Reality...
Mr quinn talks about Reality.

The mechanism of ordinary genius, the finding of connection between things, is the very same mechanism for finding enlightenment.
yes,to a certain extend,in that the genius depends on the same plethora of achievement prior to his free playgorund where he can put his further developments, but not necessarily enlightenment.
a buddha remains weary.
a free genius also resurrects aspects from the subconscious stratum to make use of what he wants to make use - atavistic resurge ;Da Vinci, for example used Mathematics as a means to 'deceive' - to prevent interference with spontaneous expression so that the resurected atavism could manifest spontaneous, now he only had to gain lessons from it.this is prophecy.
enlightenment theoretically is achieved when we reach the first cause.it will be the Self's vision of enlightenment.

the great dilemma facing those who seek for Truth and Self is that they will never know when they have found it.

i have been reading weininger

and he states that women have no soul

in my studies of hinduism there is absolutely no attidtude that women do not have a jiva or individual soul in fact anything but

i know buddha had reservations about teaching women but still in buddism though there is no soul for either gender again women are not considered spiritually unequal

so i see contradiction

another issue i have been thinking on

hinduism's yogas promise bliss or ananda

buddhism cessation of suffering

christianity 'the peace that surpasses all understanding'

'genius' as enlightenment seems to me rather arid

again i see contradiction

and self proclaimed enlightenment

you could know you had attained enlightenment

but you could be fooled as in hinduism there are varying degrees of samahdi and it would be easy to believe that something less than ultimate samahdi was enlightenment

but more to the point how can anyone decide someone else is enlightened or a genius or a sage

there is no objective standard

though there are indications but they can be inaccurate and most certainly subjective

if david says i am a genius is it necessarily true

and if he says i am not is it necessarily true

and for weininger to say that women is soulless and has no capacity for truth

though that may appeal to many men how can he really know

btw his great work is 100 years plus old

'men are all will and women are all willingness'

well there was this week an article in forbes online that advised men not to marry a woman with a career implying in essence that these woman had lost their willingness to be all willingness to a man which weininger contends is her one and only interest

it cause a bit of a scandal disappeared and then reappeared altered

there was also something about the economics of prostitution in the same issue

again weininger 'woman are either the mother or the prostitute type'

the coincidence was rather striking

These religions consider women to have a kind of micro-soul, which can sometimes grow into a fully-fledged soul. In Buddhism this is called "taking the form of a man" or "being reborn as a man". This simply means developing masculine mental characteristics.

Here are a few quotations:
- For a woman to study the scriptures indicates confusion in the realm.
- The Mahabarata, Hindu Scripture

- A child also cannot be made a witness in a court of law, nor a woman . . . nor a cheat. . . . These persons might give false evidence. A child would speak falsely from ignorance, a woman from want of veracity, an imposter from habitual depravity. - Hindu Scripture

- Infatuation, aversion, fear, disgust and various kinds of deceit are ineradicable from the minds of women; for women, therefore, there is no nirvana. ... A woman may be pure in faith and even preoccupied with the study of the sutras or the practice of a terrific asceticism: yet in her case there will still be no falling away of karmic matter.
- Mahavira, Tatparya-vriti (Jain Scripture)

- The god of death, the wind, the underworld, the ever-burning entrance to hell, the knife-edge, poison, serpent, and fire - women are all of these in one.
- The Ramayana

- It is nature's law that rivers wind, trees grow wood, and, given the opportunity, women work iniquity. - Buddha, Sutta-Pitaka

- Just, Ananda, as houses in which there are many women and but few men are easily violated by robber burglars; just so, Ananda, under whatever doctrine and discipline women are allowed to live the religious life, that religion will not last long. And just, Ananda, as when the disease called mildew falls upon a field of rice in fine condition, that field of rice does not continue long; just so, Ananda, under whatsoever doctrine and discipline women are allowed to live the religious life, that religion will not last long.
- Buddha, Vinaya-Pitaka

- Some say that learning seems not to be the business of women. I say that . . . control of the mind is of the utmost importance to women, and it would be a great mistake to say that it is not their business. The outward manner and temper of women is rooted in the negative (yin) power, and so temperamentally women are apt to be sensitive, petty, narrow, and jaundiced. Confinement results in limited vision. Consequently, among women compassion and honesty are rare indeed. That is why Buddhism says that women are particularly sinful and have the greatest difficulty in attaining Buddhahood. Thus women are in special need of mental discipline. - Toju, Zen Master

- "When the Dharma is about to disappear, women will become vigorous and will at all times do deeds of virtue. Men will grow lax and will no longer speak the Dharma."
. . . "When my Dharma disappears it will be just like an oil lamp which flares brightly for an instant just before it goes out. After this time it is difficult to speak with certainty of what will follow."
. . . "Good persons will be hard to find; at most there will be one or two. Men will die younger, and women will live longer."
- The Ultimate Extinction of the Dharma Sutra

There is no other kind of valid verification of enlightenment than self-verification. This is because you can't believe what other people tell you.

If the person is deluded then their self-verification will be wrong, and if they are not deluded then they will be right.
but more to the point how can anyone decide someone else is enlightened or a genius or a sage
Only a sage is qualified to recognize a sage.
there is no objective standard
There is an objective standard, but this standard is not visible to anyone but the sage.
btw his great work is 100 years plus old

'men are all will and women are all willingness'
Women haven't changed much in 100 yrs.

Weininger says that women are "willingness", but not necessarily willingness to a man. This is willingness to her environment, which is her master. She is a follower of fashion.

An interesting way to look at the word itself is

enlightened: To be filled with light, see everything inside (and outside) clearly.

enlightened- To become light(as opposed to heavy), since after separating the nonessential from the essential, all worries and burdens cease.

How does one go about it? In the same way as finding about anything else, first gather knowledge from the experts, then experiment on oneself( in various situations). Slowly the "real meaning" of the gathered knowledge will become clear, and when it is all clear then, viola enlightenment! Finally the learnt knowledge is also discarded(much like learning a car).

Then one just stumbles upon being enlightend?

How does one know they have become "enlightend" then?

In the beginning one can only follow one's nose. So it is largely a matter of chance, since if a person doesn't have a good nose they can be led into a lot of trouble.
How does one know they have become "enlightened" then?
In the same way that you can know anything else.

A person who is deluded will however be wrong in their knowledge, by definition.

It's a matter of choice whether you spell it with a capital "R". There is in fact there is only one reality. You would only spell it with a capital "R" if you want to contrast it with what people commonly think is reality, but which is in fact not reality at all.

so women have the power to overcome the dharma

that is pretty powerful

durga

Mahishasura, the king of Asuras, through years of austerities, was once granted a boon by Lord Bramha, that no man or deity would be able to kill him. The immense power filled in him the urge to rule over the world. He started to terrorize heaven and the inhabitants. He pervaded the world with his battalion of Asuras and plundered and ruthlessly killed the people. Chaos and anarchy reigned. Gods were driven from heaven and Mahishasura usurped the throne. The Gods scared and unable to combat him, requested Lord Shiva, Lord Bramha, Lord Vishnu to stop Mahishasura's tyranny.

In answer, the three Gods combined their divine energy and summoned up a feminine form so brilliantly glaring that it illuminated the heavens. This combined power fell on the residence of Sage Kattyana in the krishna chaturdashi (fourteenth day of new moon) in the month of Ashwin (September-October). From the glow emerged Devi Durga, a beautiful yellow woman with ten arms riding a lion. Despite her grace she bore a menacing expression, for Durga was born to kill. Fully grown and armed by the gods, beautiful Durga was named "Kattyani" as she is born in the ashram of sage Kattyana. The sage worshipped her for sukla saptami, asthami and nabami tithi then on the tithi of Dashami she killed Masishasura. She was sent forth against Mahishasura armed by symbols of divine power; Vishnu's discus; Shiva's trident; Varuna's conchshell; Agni's flaming dart; Vayu's bow; Surya's quiver and arrow; Yama's iron rod; Indra's thunderbolt; Kubera's club and a garland of snakes from Shesha and a lion as a charger from Himalayas. A fierce battle took place. Finally when Mahishasura in the guise of a buffalo charged against Durga, the Devi beheaded the buffalo and from it emerge Mahishasura in his original form. Durga pierced his chest with the trident and relieved the world from the evil power. That is why she is 'Durgatinashini Durga', our mother goddess who destroys the evil, protects her devotees and establishes peace and prosperity on earth.

shakti

In Hinduism, Shakti is an aspect of Devi, and a personification of God as the Divine Mother who represents the active, dynamic principles of feminine power. In Shaktism, Shakti is worshiped as the Supreme Being. Alternatively, in other Hindu traditions, Shakti represents the power of God, called Vishnu or Shiva. For Vaishnavites, God's power or Shakti is Lakshmi. For Shaivites, God's power is Parvati.

tara

Tara or Arya Tara, also known as Jetsun Dolma in Tibetan, is a female Buddha typically associated with Buddhist tantra practice as preserved in Tibetan Buddhism. She is the "mother of liberation", and represents the virtues of success in work and achievements. Tara is a tantric deity whose practice is used by practitioners of Vajrayana to develop certain inner qualities and understand outer, inner and secret teachings about compassion, mercy and emptiness.

In this tale there is a young princess who lives in a different world system, millions of years in the past. Her name is Yeshe Dawa, which means "Moon of Primordial Awareness". For quite a number of aeons she makes offerings to the Buddha of that world system "Tonyo Drupa". She receives special instruction from him concerning bodhicitta — the heart-mind of a bodhisattva. After doing this, some monks approach her and suggest that because of her level of attainment she should next pray to be reborn as a male to progress further. At this point she lets the monks know in no uncertain terms that from the point of view of Enlightenment it is only "weak minded worldlings" who see gender as a barrier to attaining enlightenment. She sadly notes there have been few who wish to work for the welfare of beings in a female form though. Therefore she resolves to always be reborn as a female bodhisattva, until samsara is no more. She then stays in a palace in a state of meditation for some ten million years, and the power of this practice releases tens of millions of beings from suffering. As a result of this Tonyo Drupa tells her she will henceforth manifest supreme bodhi as the Goddess Tara in many world systems to come.

"the gods scared and unable to combat him" turn to a female goddess

"Shaki represents the power of god"

"it is only weakminded wordlings who see gender as a barrier for enlightment"

such that it is men's mission in life to decimate that power and claim it for themselves

interestingly younger men those under thirty do not have this view of male superiority

at least none that i have met

in ten years of higher education i never met a young man that felt women were lesser

it is always the older men who cling to their *cough* innate superiority

Unconsciousness is extremely powerful. That is why so few people ever escape its grip.

Nothing can overcome Truth, but unconsciousness can overcome consciousness. For example, a disease can fell a Buddha, no matter how wise he is.

This is correct. Women who attain masculine qualities of mind, such as powerful discrimination, focus, consistency, depth, etc, have no barrier.

Women (unconsciousness) rule our world, there is no doubt about it.

Many a demonic man has been tamed by getting married. This is well known.
interestingly younger men those under thirty do not have this view of male superiority

at least none that i have met
Our modern world is largely feminized. Educational institutions are 100% feminized. These days there are hardly any male teachers in primary school, and relatively few in secondary school. The current educational environment is poisonous to the male spirit. Many children in the West are reared only by their mothers, without a father. In our age it is not politically correct to criticize women at all, and there are huge punishments for doing so. All this has a big influence on how the younger generation think.

Also, the younger generation do not read the great works of literature of the past, such as Weininger, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, etc. They are too busy working, playing computer games, or shopping.
it is always the older men who cling to their *cough* innate superiority
The superiority of men is because of their different brain structure and different hormonal system. It is known that women become better at abstract thinking, and have better concentration, when given increased levels of testosterone.
find me a work by a man under thirty that espouses the views of weininger/solway/quinn
Weininger was less than thirty.

Mentally, I am only about 23.

I deleted a post, in case anyone thought of responding. I care about truth, but I don't need the possibility of blackmail. :D

Suffice to say, sky, I'm under 30, and I view women as inferior, philosophically, to men. They're also terrible at first-person shooters.

Woman has no power of her own, only what man gives her. She is nothing more than a fantasy he has created so that his base desires can be fulfilled. Into her he has poured all the worst of him. She is testament to his corrupt soul.

You may find a couple of men on this forum who have faced the truth about their attachment to woman – but because woman is such a strong and deep attachment, most men prefer to close their minds and never think about their true relationship with her.

Weininger, Solway and Quinn are rare men indeed stating the truth about woman – by doing so they show her the respect that she deserves.

Weininger was less than thirty.

Mentally, I am only about 23.
yes under thirty in the victorian age

'mental flash in this moment' his whole life was under the sway of queen victoria for this was a time when the 'sun never set on the british empire'

this would probably have had a great impact on a man

after all puny though he may think her soul she had all the power

and kevin (and to you and all men here these are philosophical arguments my statements nothing personal)

'i am mentally about age 23'

what is your empirical proof of this definitely self determined truth

i am recently graduated from ten years of higher education and since men find me attractive i know something about them as i had access to SO many and no i never was sexually involved with any of them

some men at 23 are nowhere mom is still doing his laundry and handing him his lunch money

then there is shawn fanning who created napster was set upon mightily by the LAW and turned it around and cut an immensely profitable deal to make napster legal without missing a beat or breaking a sweat all under the age of twenty three

btw i have never used napster nor made an illegal download but i thought it was so funny he handled himself so well and though i know music is held in low regard here he did open up an industry of music delivered via file rather than via cd

(he gave me a career i intend to use only the net for my music i am too lazy to tour it requires too much hardware and energy and in via the net it will bring the big recording companies crashing down and not that long a time either)

also thanks be to those google guys who give me access to almost everything while reclining comfortably

so that you are enlightened i may accept

that only a sage can recognize a sage i might accept

but this has no basis in any objective truth

come on if this is the truth and reality you speak of you do it an injustice with this statement

would a cat scan of your brain support this

and yes i know brain is not mind

but this is a meaningless statement as far as i can see in fact it seems a bit desperate when i correlate it with a statement by david that after thirty enlightenment is difficult because the mind has become set in its ways which is the same attitude many scientists and mathematicians have also about their fields

i am glad to hear you say this and if you want to believe these are masculine qualities it makes no difference either way

and i will give you this

whilst i was doing everything to avoid taking the required math a math teacher said to me 'you have talent for math but you don't focus;if you focused you'd be dangerous'

and our school's most brilliant mathematician when i mentioned to him that another prof had told me that what was interesting about my creative nature was that i freely borrowed the disciplines of one field and applied them to another said

'that is the ultimate skill'

well 'good to know'

i finally had no choice but to take the math as my scholarship would not pay for further pricey private music lessons until i did so

so i focused and realized that if i made it a matter of mastering my cute t83 calculator i would bypass the tedium which was my real avoidance

'he can be forgiven'

no problem i think he is more of his time than for this time but i hold nothing against him nor you nor david nor the rest or the 'geniuses' here

since i don't consider men my superiors i don't have a problem with them except those who lust in my direction

Mentally, I am only about 23.
yes under thirty in the victorian age
Genius does not belong to any age.
that only a sage can recognize a sage i might accept

but this has no basis in any objective truth
Define what you mean by "objective truth".

Let's say that you live in a world full of morons, and only you know that 1 + 1 = 2. No-one else can verify it.

This is how it is with enlightenment and Truth. The sage can see it, but no-one else can. The truth he sees is a supremely simple, undeniable truth, yet no-one else has a stomach for it.

These kind of truths, including the purely logical, definitional truth that 1 + 1 = 2, cannot be demonstrated to scientists.
would a cat scan of your brain support this
All empirical evidence has two major failings: firstly, that which is observed might be an illusion, and secondly, observations are easily misinterpreted.

Science has to be discarded if we are interested in philosophical and spiritual truths.

The truths of these men are identical to the truths of the Eastern traditions, but speak more to the Western mind. They are less confused with ritual and tradition.
