Abstraction vs practicality

Post by Sage »

How do you deal with the wishy-washy people who say that being practical and concrete is better than being abstract and philosophical? Any ideas and thoughts are welcome.
I'll go first: Since language itself is an abstraction, by their logic they cannot even communicate.

Do people ever make arguments where that counter-argument works?

To clarify, I imagine that when someone argues for practical thinking at the expense of abstract thought, they have something different in mind. For instance, they are emphasizing that one should always be able to provide for one's independent living, even if it means less time to think about metaphysical topics. In that case, your counter-argument would be a strawman.

I presume you are talking about the idea that "Survival is more important than truth".

This is something the individual has to decide for themselves. If a person decides that survival (eg, sex and work) is the most important thing, then they will have to face the consequences of that. By contrast, the person who values truth may not get sex or work, so that person will also face the consequences.

There is a pressure on either individual to change into other. On the person who just wants sex, money, and food there is the pressure to be truthful, and on the more truthful person there is the emotional/animal pressure to crave for sex, money, and food.

I think you are being sarcastic in your question, but this is probably the best topic that has been on the board lately so I'll bite.

Language is an abstraction, but it is practical. Concrete reminds me of a block, and block-head seems fitting to the alternatives presented.

The middle way - some of each in good measure at appropriate times brings the best results. Some good thinking makes the doing more efficient, but some doing is necessary for the thinking to occur.

Middle way, Kevin... It would be a shame if all the thinkers were bred out of existence. David contributed to his genetic duty, and you have proven that work need not get in the way of truth.

Truth is important to survival. The human race has been in a child-state for as long as we are aware of, so the aforementioned statement is counter-intuitive. Furthermore, at this juncture, truth can easily cost the survival of individuals. Ultimately though, truth is imperative to our survival. It's time for the human race to outgrow whispering secrets, lying, cheating, and other giddy childish behaviors.

A step to maturity is realizing that nothing of sufficient value comes from the selfishness of childish behaviors - nor from the extremism common to the teen mindset.

I should have been more precise.
I'm referring to when you're actually arguing with someone and whenever you bring up anything that they cannot comprehend by counting on their fingers, they charge you with being impractical and abstract. These are the same people who tell you to "give up intellectualizing".
How do you deal with these people?

Why would you argue with such a person? Just nod, smile, and recognize that this is beyond their mental capacities. Accept them for who they are, respect the abilities that they do have, and don't try to change them into something they are not. It just frustrates you, and subtracts from the time you could use debating such points with someone more on your level with such things.

I have a great dog; she's smart and really willing to do anything to please me. I even got her to pee on command. I recognize that no matter what I do, I would never get her to lay eggs for me though, so I don't even try. If I were to get frustrated by my dog's inability to lay eggs, that would be my problem, not Ryonen's.

Trying to argue with someone about something they can't understand, and obviously are not motivated to understand, is as silly as trying to get a dog to lay eggs. Don't bother, or it will make you look silly.

You can either give up on them, or try another approach to deprogram them. Some people just aren’t capable of going all the way, either they were environmentally damaged or genetically deficient.

A common new age philosophy is that you can surrender into the infinite, and stop thinking altogether, but usually people that gravitate towards this material tend to have weak characters, and are not capable of negating emotional attachments and perfecting their reasoning skills.

I also believe that once a rational foundation has been established psychologically through wisdom, one can still specialize into a pragmatic area of thought in addition to philosophy, whether it be politics, economics or the sciences.

One’s understanding of causality can branch out into different specialized areas depending on ones own interest and temperament.
