God?

Post by Phoenix Valtrose »

The world turns. Who out there can feel it turning? I can't. When I look up at that old moon it stills boggles my mind how something that big can just hang there. Of course both of those amazements are old hat and can be explained. We don't give it a second thought. How long can that sun burn? Another ho hummer....huh?

I don't know if there really is a God. I do know when I look at my daughter and see her mom features, all because of a little sperm meeting up with an egg.....wow! Of course that's just plain old run of the mill egg fertilization, yep...boring!!!!!!

If we can have those "facts" above then nothing should be ruled out. To take a .."nope couldn't happen!"...stance seems pretty naive to me. If we did come from some lower form of life and evolved into what we are today, then anything isn't out of the realms of possibilities. Think about that for a minute. All living creatures from the bedbug to the elephant came from something that crawled out of the abyss? That seems pretty far fetched to me. How come we stopped evolving? Where are the new species of animals? I don't care how long something exists, it doesn't just grow wings and start flying.

No I'm not some Bible thumping religious fanatic. Actually I question the Bible, and do think we are seeing more man than God there. I don't however rule out the possibility that just maybe there is a Master Blaster, Da Man, Numero Uno, Mr.God. I'd go as far as to say stranger things have happened.

Please no..."it's a fantasy man, that only igno..blah blah blah"....unless you can prove that, don't talk foolish. You are no more certain of that than those who roll around at tent revivals in their praise of the Lord. Which is also foolish.

I prefer to go for the gold and hope to Hell I'm right, as opposed to....bah humbug!

The only alternative is that we are caused by something superior to ourselves, then we have to ask where that superior thing came from. Did it come from something superior to itself? Now that is far-fetched.
How come we stopped evolving?
Everything is evolving, or devolving, all the time.
Where are the new species of animals?
Human beings are a new species of animal.
I don't care how long something exists, it doesn't just grow wings and start flying.
How do you know that? There are possums and lizards that glide from tree to tree because they have evolved flaps of skin between their limbs. It seems natural enough to me.
I prefer to go for the gold and hope to Hell I'm right
So long as you know that there are serious consequences to being wrong.

What do you think are the consequences of believing in a God that doesn't exist?

And this is the forum for geniuses? well if intellect is not a criteria here then my grammar should be ok also :P

God is meme or a virus that has evolved in the space where ignorance lives in the brains of human beings. evolving a language and superior brain to animal has its price :(

I love soundbites :)

You can't say what God is, that God is, or describe any attribute of God that is not open to challenge. Live as if God is, and think as if God isn't, and make what faith you have real in your deeds and you will deserve what reward awaits you in your end. Or is that, the end.

That's not right. It depends on what you define "God" to mean. It is possible to define "God" in such a way that it is not open to challenge.
Live as if God is
That would be fatal if God didn't exist.

If a people defined "God" to signify "everything", then their definition would be beyond dispute, since it is not open to debate whether there is an "everything".

If you lived as if a God existed (including praying to God, spreading the word, etc), when he didn't exist, then you would be living in delusion. Living in delusion always has very bad consequences.

True, it is posible to interpret things in certain way, i don't think that this interpretation was the message that he tried to get across or maybe he did, to me it made somewhat good sense :) Why would someone use word "god" insted of "everything" and engage in such word "shuffle" , but i see the logic of your example.

By living as if god existed and think as if he did'nt,
Live as if God is, and think as if God isn't, and make what faith you have real in your deeds and you will deserve what reward awaits you in your end.
i think he ment that one should live as if you will be "accountable for your actions" (god is used as a "shortening of idea" as you will be held acountable if not to higher power then to yourself certainly.) , but to understand that there is no real reason for such belief. (sounds like twist on what descartes wrote on religion) nothing to do with going to church and lighting candles and calling yourself christian etc. Everything is open to interpretation i guess, but if i can follow the chain of logic sentance after sentance and i guess that it is the original meaning of the message. kinda like when you decript a message, you know when it starts to make sense then that is probably the original text, if it does'nt then its either garbage or your deciphering is foulty. There is no way to tell which for certain, but you can make guess in such a case based on previous information , in this case his posts. It did make sense to me, which does not mean that my interpretation is what he ment. Thats the problem with short "cryptic" messages = lots of interpretations :) Maybe he will elaborate on it himself more :) unless he is parroting it from someone else without understanding it :P

Let me dare you to define God in such a way that does not leave the definition open to challenge. I doubt you can describe a mountain without there being a possibility of a challenge from a different space and time. Since we are all seeing life (and God) from different perspectives, that we can agree at all is a testiment to the social existence of humanity, which in some respects is built upon our general agreeability. You say A is A? Let us agree that A is A, and see what you build with that.
Life is fatal whether we believe God exists or not, whether God made the rules or not, because the rules are evidently applicable to all. Everybody gets to live, and everybody gets to die. Isn't it cool?

God is a great reason to do good. God is a terrible reason to do harm. If I wanted to conceal all my ignorance with one little word that would be God, and to pretend that ignorance was all essential knowledge, and every excuse to abuse people, and every justification of injustice; then that would be me standing before the fabric of my ignorence, and saying cheese. Take your damned picture!

I try to use God as an excuse for doing good, but I don't need a reason. Nor do I need a hell to burn sinners forever in. We got the same life as joe stalin and adolf hitler, and what if all they did, all that they accomplished, and all that they were was pain. Isn't it better that we should all die, some having done good and others hurt, than to have stalin and hitler have eternal life, even if in hell? Worse and better than hell or heaven is to have our deeds go on affecting the living long after we are gone.

First, I am New here..Hello to all...
Second, I am new here...Hello Earth
Third, God??
What is God?? A reality, A description...

I feel it is description.Description for something we are
unfamiliar to as Earth bound humans..As humans it is Part of our subjective nature to offer description, to classify...Even
to that wich is unknown to us.
We may feel it, we may sense it, we know within that that
something is there, but what?, what is it?, where is it?

Bit convoluted and poetic, but i think i kinda understand :S you are saying that you would be displaying ignorance if you were claiming existance of god? does not fit in with the rest of the post though unless you change the meaning of word "god" there:S That word has gone trough so many "facelifts" in religion that it is just ridiculous.

well hello cosmic_prostitute, i like the new nickname.

The "God" was used as explanation to be the cause of creation of earth, thunder, and storms etc , but now only irrational minority believes that god made earth in 7 days 4000 years ago.

Now god has suddenly become "an idea" a "concept".

Most of the claims about his existence sound like con to me. (and there is very high probability it is a con meme most vigorously propagated by priests based on some factual events , on which i will not be speculating on right now.)

This reminded me something that happened to me this morning:

This morning there was a knock at my door. When I answered the door I found a well groomed, nicely dressed couple. The man spoke first:

"Hi! I'm John, and this is Mary."

Mary: "Hi! We're here to invite you to come kiss Hank's ass with us."

Me: "Pardon me?! What are you talking about? Who's Hank, and why would I want to kiss his ass?"

John: "If you kiss Hank's ass, he'll give you a million dollars; and if you don't, he'll kick the shit out of you."

Me: "What? Is this some sort of bizarre mob shake-down?"

John: "Hank is a billionaire philanthropist. Hank built this town. Hank owns this town. He can do what ever he wants, and what he wants is to give you a million dollars, but he can't until you kiss his ass."

Me: "That doesn't make any sense. Why..."

Mary: "Who are you to question Hank's gift? Don't you want a million dollars? Isn't it worth a little kiss on the ass?"

Me: "Well maybe, if it's legit, but..."

John: "Then come kiss Hank's ass with us."

Me: "Do you kiss Hank's ass often?"

Mary: "Oh yes, all the time..."

Me: "And has he given you a million dollars?"

John: "Well no, you don't actually get the money until you leave town."

Me: "So why don't you just leave town now?"

Mary: "You can't leave until Hank tells you to, or you don't get the money, and he kicks the shit out of you."

Me: "Do you know anyone who kissed Hank's ass, left town, and got the million dollars?"

John: "My mother kissed Hank's ass for years. She left town last year, and I'm sure she got the money."

Me: "Haven't you talked to her since then?"

John: "Of course not, Hank doesn't allow it."

Me: "So what makes you think he'll actually give you the money if you've never talked to anyone who got the money?"

Mary: "Well, he gives you a little bit before you leave. Maybe you'll get a raise, maybe you'll win a small lotto, maybe you'll just find a twenty dollar

bill on the street."

Me: "What's that got to do with Hank?

John: "Hank has certain 'connections.'"

Me: "I'm sorry, but this sounds like some sort of bizarre con game."

John: "But it's a million dollars, can you really take the chance? And remember, if you don't kiss Hank's ass he'll kick the shit of you."

Me: "Maybe if I could see Hank, talk to him, get the details straight from him..."

Mary: "No one sees Hank, no one talks to Hank."

Me: "Then how do you kiss his ass?"

John: "Sometimes we just blow him a kiss, and think of his ass. Other times we kiss Karl's ass, and he passes it on."

Me: "Who's Karl?"

Mary: "A friend of ours. He's the one who taught us all about kissing Hank's ass. All we had to do was take him out to dinner a few times."

Me: "And you just took his word for it when he said there was a Hank, that Hank wanted you to kiss his ass, and that Hank would reward you?"

John: "Oh no! Karl's got a letter Hank sent him years ago explaining the whole thing. Here's a copy; see for yourself."

John handed me a photocopy of a handwritten memo on From the desk of Karl letterhead. There were eleven items listed:

1. Kiss Hank's ass and he'll give you a million dollars when you leave town.

2. Use alcohol in moderation.

3. Kick the shit out of people who aren't like you.

4. Eat right.

5. Hank dictated this list himself.

6. The moon is made of green cheese.

7. Everything Hank says is right.

8. Wash your hands after going to the bathroom.

9. Don't drink.

10. Eat your wieners on buns, no condiments.

11. Kiss Hank's ass or he'll kick the shit out of you.

Me: "This would appear to be written on Karl's letterhead."

Mary: "Hank didn't have any paper."

Me: "I have a hunch that if we checked we'd find this is Karl's handwriting."

John: "Of course, Hank dictated it."

Me: "I thought you said no one gets to see Hank?"

Mary: "Not now, but years ago he would talk to some people."

Me: "I thought you said he was a philanthropist. What sort of philanthropist kicks the shit out of people just because they're different?"

Mary: "It's what Hank wants, and Hank's always right."

Me: "How do you figure that?"

Mary: "Item 7 says 'Everything Hanks says is right.' That's good enough for me!"

Me: "Maybe your friend Karl just made the whole thing up."

John: "No way! Item 5 says 'Hank dictated this list himself.' Besides, item 2 says 'Use alcohol in moderation,' Item 4 says 'Eat right,' and item 8 says 'Wash your hands after going to the bathroom.' Everyone knows those things are right, so the rest must be true, too."

Me: "But 9 says 'Don't Drink,' which doesn't quite go with item 2, and 6 says 'The moon is made of green cheese,' which is just plain wrong."

John: "There's no contradiction between 9 and 2, 9 just clarifies 2. As far as 6 goes, you've never been to the moon, so you can't say for sure."

Me: "Scientists have pretty firmly established that the moon is made of rock..."

Mary: "But they don't know if the rock came from the Earth, or from out of space, so it could just as easily be green cheese."

Me: "I'm not really an expert, but I think the theory that the Moon came from the Earth has been discounted. Besides, not knowing where the rock came from doesn't make it cheese."

John: "Aha! You just admitted that scientists make mistakes, but we know Hank is always right!"

Me: "We do?"

Mary: "Of course we do, Item 5 says so."

Me: "You're saying Hank's always right because the list says so, the list is right because Hank dictated it, and we know that Hank dictated it because the list says so. That's circular logic, no different than saying 'Hank's right because he says he's right.'"

John: "Now you're getting it! It's so rewarding to see someone come around to Hank's way of thinking."

Me: "But...oh, never mind. What's the deal with wieners?"

Mary blushes. John says: "Wieners, in buns, no condiments. It's Hank's way. Anything else is wrong."

Me: "What if I don't have a bun?"

John: "No bun, no wiener. A wiener without a bun is wrong."

Me: "No relish? No Mustard?"

Mary looks positively stricken. John shouts: "There's no need for such language! Condiments of any kind are wrong!"

Me: "So a big pile of sauerkraut with some wieners chopped up in it would be out of the question?"

Mary sticks her fingers in her ears: "I am not listening to this. La la la, la la, la la la."

John: "That's disgusting. Only some sort of evil deviant would eat that..."

Me: "It's good! I eat it all the time."

Mary faints. John catches her: "Well, if I'd known you where one of those I wouldn't have wasted my time. When Hank kicks the shit out of you I'll be there, counting my money and laughing. I'll kiss Hank's ass for you, you bunless cut-wienered sauerkraut-eater."

With this, John dragged Mary to their waiting car, and sped off.

Well no it didn't happen to me, it just sound better in first person :)

obsecure is realy anoying and confusing :(

People do not define God to signify, but to communicate, and all forms of communication are suspect and open to dispute. I disagree. If we live as though justice exists, and make it a mantra and an item of conversation, then we give it a reality even in a world where no perfect example of justice can be found, and where it is farthest from people's thoughts. If there is no supreme being, but we make the idea of a supreme being and what a supreme should be into a part of our lives, and when we act the part, and extend a lifesaving hand now and again, and actually care for those we have no practical reason to care for, then we make God in the process of an idea of God making us.

People do not define God to signify, but to communicate.
Signs, signifiers, are for communication.

But they are not necessarily to communicate with other people. Sometimes the individual can use them to communicate with himself. So if an individual knows what he himself means by "God", that's all that matters.
Everything used to define god when you have no idea of what everything could possibly be any more than defining the nature of God without any degree of certainty of any attribute of God- is only a claim of special powers, and which, as a claim, is also suspect and disput-able.
"Everything" is a category which can be known precisely, and its properties can be logically deduced with certainty. The detailed contents of "everything" are not relevant to the category "everything".

If people behave in such a manner that constitutes "justice", for whatever reason, then justice exists. But if God doesn't exist, then no matter how many people believe in his existence, he still doesn't exist.

Believing in fantasies always leads to downfall.

If justice is based on fantasy, then it too will fall.

Yes, I suppose people can use concepts, and signs to think as a form of self communication.

Of course, you know everything far better than I; but wouldn't you agree that it is easier to know nothing than everything. Understanding that I only ask the question since you seem far advanced in infinite knowledge.

You must agree that God exists. Why, your knowledge is greater than mine, for you even know he is he, and I only have a name: God, which like your everything rather files all of my ignorence under a specific heading.
Believing in fantasies always leads to downfall.

If justice is based on fantasy, then it too will fall.
I would not ask you to believe in the fantasy of God, but rather to believe in the reality of God. If God means to one, and that belief causes that one to extend a hand to another one in need then God the idea is made real in the lives of two people. Some people believe in luck and fate which at one time or another have been gods, and we make no offering to fate or fortune, but think they are yet real, and that they have whatever reality words can give, and whatever reality belief can give, and people still thank God for good luck or abuse God for their fates.

And what of Government. Is that not a subjective reality like God, made real by our support, our fear or our antagonism? Is it not possible that when great revolutions break upon countries that we are seeing a breach of faith, and that even great empires can fall for the simple reason that when the burden of government gets too great for people to bear they simply put down their loads and get on with their lives. Yes, God may be a subjective reality, but that fact makes God even more powerful and more dangerous. People often cling to their subjective realities even while all their objective realities, including their lives are being stripped from them.
If I know nothing, and you know everything, perhaps together we know something. There is sometimes a great wisdom to be found in the acceptance of all we do not know, and of all that is beyond our understanding. Then we are set free to move the pieces we do know on the board of life.

god is good. the good tree that bares a good fruit will bare witness of this god / good. If you discuss the concept of god, it's best when two or more consider themselves blessed, and they share the good news they have in common. May we all be soo blessed. Anyone consider themself blessed by the eternal and integrated god, who thinks they're dwelling with him? That's the standard for those who actually make it into god's eternal and integrated heaven. I ask this because I consider myself blessed by the eternal and integrated god and presently dwelling with him. Anyone evenly yoked with me, let me know about. That would be good news.
Praise god!!!

god is good.

As if. There is no god, but if there were then such a god would be neither good or evil, but both, as both good and evil reside purely within the ego of each of us.

The good tree that bares a good fruit will bare witness of this god / good.

Fuck off with your religious “bare witness” shit. There is no concept as good in the realms of reality.

If you discuss the concept of god, it's best when two or more consider themselves blessed, and they share the good news they have in common.

Blessed by whom? Blessed in what manner? It is best when two or more consider themselves blessed only because they can revel in their delusion of immortality and self-importance as derived from a common belief.

May we all be soo blessed.

I would rather not be so blessed with delusion.

Anyone consider themself blessed by the eternal and integrated god, who thinks they're dwelling with him?

No, not here.

That's the standard for those who actually make it into god's eternal and integrated heaven. I ask this because I consider myself blessed by the eternal and integrated god and presently dwelling with him. Anyone evenly yoked with me, let me know about. That would be good news.

You are purely in a fantasy land.

Praise god!!!

There is no need to praise that which exists, without the need for a god, as everything does.

Go and Fuck Barbie. I don't even take that what you are saying is real. I think you might just be playing games. If not, then if you stay here you'll have to suck the devils cock quite often.

I don't want to rattle the monkeys cage, but...

It is very easy to say God is Good, or God is everything. Since we do not know the nature of good or of everything it is a good description of God, and as that, it serve to objectify God and give a point to where we can direct our prayers.

We know that God is not good. When some terrible event occurs; one of us, usually me steps forward and says it is the will of God, because everyone knows God is the source of both Good and bad. If you can look at the firmament and call it the result of power, as it is; then you can grasp how mindless is the hand of God. God takes Lincoln and leaves hitler. Stalin dies in his own house, happily planning a new purge. God and human misery are unaccountable, and so irreconcilable. But, in a metaphysical sense, if we had no knowledge of God within us we would not be able to concieve of God outside of us. We know what it takes to launch a rock, but we cannot concieve of the energy it takes to suspend galaxies and stars in an infinity of space; but perhaps if there is a creator God he cannot imagine any God with such great powers caring for the unfortunate Yahoos on this planet who spend all their time tearing at each other, tearing down what others build, heaping contumely on those most dear, and burning with malice the unsuspecting.
It is not hard to imagine a God in some sense. It is not hard to imagine a superior being capable of caring for all of earth's children. The great difficulty with regard to God is to find in this absolute power any great caring for Earth's children who cannot care for themselves. To humanize God is in some senses to tame God. To objectify God is in some sense to destroy God. My God, the unconcievable, has done enough for me in giving me sense and senses. And no one has shown me that he responds to music and burnt offerings. So I choose to act the part of God with what power I am possessed of.

Let me leave you with a terrible thought. What if God willingly or unwillingly destroyed God in the process of making the cosmos. What if we and all life cannot imagine in Good and bad, or in light and darkness anything but the touch of a caring God, but what if God has left us alone, as the only beings in any sort of position to help ouselves or our fellow beings. Are we not then obliged to see God as good, and to be good ourselves?
