The Elephant in the Middle of the Living Room

Post by Elizabeth Isabelle »

It seems to me that the board suddenly got very quiet after Hunted posted her suicide note. Although we do not know what happened to her, we recognize that she could have killed herself. On the one hand, humans have a tendancy to have concern for one another - and on the other hand this is a board that exalts non-attachment. Additionally, suicide has often been a difficult topic to broach, and could still be a difficult topic even, or maybe especially, for those of us who have thought about or attempted suicide ourselves.

Some may not have felt anything, having not known her very well, and contemplated their lack of feeling. Others may have had an emotional impact. Some may have considered Schrodinger's cat, and wondered how it might apply to us not really knowing what happened to Hunted. And of course, people probably thought about her reasons, and other related matters.

There really was no warning here. We can see indications that she wasn't in the best frame of mind on her profile page, but there really were no indications that she was suicidal before her final post. There is no way to know the part of the mind that a person does not share - and that goes for Hunted and everyone else. People may have thought about that, too.

I thought it would be appropriate to have a thread where people could discuss what thoughts this event has brought to mind.

I don't think any of us knew how much Hunted was hurting.

It all makes me think about what solitary lives we all live, even those of us who are "social". Our internal world is not known to those who are around us.

Personally, I'm scared about what my kid is up to, and feel pretty impotent.

Unfortunately, not knowing what happened to people you meet on the internet is fairly common. How often is there conversation on "I wonder what happened to Scifel?" or "haven't heard from _____ in a while, hope they're ok..." and the fact is that in a vast majority of theses cases we'll never know. People get sick of boards and just disappear regularly... it sucks, but it is one of those things that is just destined to happen when we're all spread so far apart from everyone we talk to.

People do just get sick of boards and leave regularly, but they don't usually post a suicide note before doing so.

The board often quiets down after a prolonged busy spell like the one it just experienced. I'm not sure the two are related.
I thought it would be appropriate to have a thread where people could discuss what thoughts this event has brought to mind.
The note was another reminder of the transitory nature of life, and the difficulties involved in attaining and maintaining sanity.

True - but my point is that unless she comes back, we'll never know what happened, so worrying about it is not going to accomplish anything useful for her nor us.

In the case of Scifell, he was going to spend his last 3 or 4 months traveling around Europe, and then kill himself. So there's no way we can know how it all ended. If he changed his mind and kept his life, even if he ever wanted to post again, I imagine he would be too embarrassed to admit he didn't do it, and would've posted under a different name (imo).

It's not always easy to gage a person's emotional or mental health based solely on their posts, at least with regards to suicide. I hope Hunted takes the advice to seek professional help.

I used to have a roommate who was 'goth' and complained to me day and night how much he hated everything, everyone and even his life. He often proclaimed the virtues of suicide and often pined for his own death. After a month or two of hearing how he wanted to commit suicide day and night, after pitying him and talking out with him throughout, I finally told him to kill himself. I said, "If you really hate life and yourself this much, and you think there's no other way to deal with life, then kill yourself."

Needless to say, after he found he could get no more pity or sorrow for himself out of me, he never talked about suicide with me again. As a matter of fact, we never spoke a single word for the next nine months. If I thought he was seriously in peril, and needed intervention, I would have done so. But he was just looking for attention, wallowing in his own Type O Negative and Spawn. I preferred the enduring silence to his constant whining. From what Hunted left, though, I think she would do better checking herself into the ER immediately, or wherever else she could get the help she needs.

She is alive and well and reading this thread. She just needs to accept that the world is problematic.

I think she has accepted that.

And how do you know she is alive and well? Did she pm you?
