Interestingly Average you were yourself a proponent of the all pervading consciousness theory

The following is quote from your thread ":Your Concept of Rebirth"
average wrote:Reality is an appearance that comes and goes, pure consciousness is that which witnesses this coming and going, while itself remains constant.
Things don't really have beginnings and endings, certainly not absolute ones. They do transform though but ultimately they stay the same. Look at matter it comes and goes, it transforms, but essentially it remains the same. Same for emotions, greed turns to jealousy, which can turn to anger, and then it might turn to forgiveness and love and then complacency..or whatever. But things don't just disappear. The same is true for consciousness, it might go through different stages, baby consciousness, dog consciousness, your current consciousness, but essentially it is the same.
So rebirth happens on a relative level, while ultimately you reside in pure consciousness, pure nirvana. This is why they say nirvana is not something you attain, or you have, its not an event, its what you are.
So you have discarded this concept now, I guess it became too full of holes on closer scrutiny.

Do not worry Miki you will also discard the all pervading consciousness concept sooner or later. It is a stage, it will pass. Surely your vigorous defending shows that you are aware of the holes in the concept, when it is saturated with holes it will disappear of its own.

This is a highly interesting thread.

I wish to point out something that appears to me to be of fundamental importance.

You have a perception of exceptional clarity; but even you are not free. You cannot avoid your biology, and it cannot avoid forming you. There is no doubt to me that what you say is highly accurate; but it is also fundamentally inaccurate. The self is an illusion, but it is one that exists, that plays its role, and your deconstruction of your self into its component illusions none the less bears the fundamental imprint of your self. If what you said was absolutely true, it would irrelevant to perceive it in a nihilistic fashion, irrelevant to smile, and irrelevant to be on these forums. To understand these processes, and to allow them to operate is to admit their reality. Thus your self is real, irrespective of the illusionary and biological processes that go into your construction.

One may ignore them for a time, suppress them for a time, control them for a time; but this takes effort, skill, practice and conscious determination. Thus "enlightenment" would simply be the destruction or control of natural triggers, suppressing the regeneration of the ego, allowing this:
There is no kingdom of God or Heaven, no Nirvana and no Absolute Truth, No Samsara, No Salvation and no Damnation for you

You do not persist long enough to call yourself wise, enlightened, holy, profound, truthful. What you refer to was never there.

You can not enter the gates of nirvana because the gates are imaginary, just like you.

You are a ghost and I am talking to the wind.
to be the true perspective of the subject at all times. Which would seem ironic, the achievement of enlightenment so that the destruction of the meaning and relevance of enlightenment and indeed all things could be true in the subject, and the further irony that this may infact be missing the point.

I must commend your clarity of thought; for purely selfish reasons on my part ofcourse.

No need to avoid it, since I do not identify with that which it forms.

I don't think they mean anything at all. As if there is a conscious choice in what one means, making what one means, meaningless. Consciousness is just being kicked around really; that's it I guess.

I just can't seem to get a hang of it though.

The pure consciousness is aware of change constantly. Dreams occur when the right conditions are in place, similar to other transient phenomena, pure consciousness is aware of this change but itself does not change, it does not turn on or off and does not go here or there.
While the objects may change, they come and go, the perceiver remains constant - constantly perceiving change.
What is pure consciousness pray tell, and how did it derive its apparent indestructibility.

Yes you do for your presence here and your response to criticism with an emotive reaction are not simplistic single function biological drives necessary to maintain your existence, but the results of complex psychological processes resulting in the attempt to fulfill what your ego deems necessary. You may claim to not identify with your ego, but none the less the entirety of the entity that forms your existence does identify with its ego. Thus you are effectively denying what is an unavoidable presence that drives your existence, irrespective of your conclusions and irrespective of what determines your reaction to this entity. Thus you attempt to seperate that which is irrelevant to seperate.
You speak as though there is an entity somewhere who has the choice to smile, the choice to perceive, and the choice to be on these forums.

Choice is irrelevant. Free Will is an illusion. In order for free will to exist and to be free it must be able to make choices irrespective of meaning, influence or desire. In denying meaning, influence and desire there are no grounds on which to make a choice, there is no difference between the subjects of the choice, and there is no choice to make. The ability to perceive, and the necessity to interperate and construct conceptions in order to perceive renders free will an abstract concept of no relevance to the actual machinery of mind.

That choice equals free will, and self awareness of free will equals consciousness is one of the institutionalised fundamental illusionary fallacies in the inquery into consciousness itself. It is my thinking that consciousness in the human mind, my mind anyway, is the ability to observe the conceptual implications of observation itself within thought.

To refuse to identify the highest facet of consciousness and the primacy of self with observation is in my mind to lie to ones self irrelevantly. The fact of the matter is that your entire perspective and the entirety of what you have said here is an observation that you have made. There is no deeper mechanic, and whether or not you choose to identify with it is irrelevant. We remain biological machines that have evolved in symbiocy with the requirements that the natural world has forced upon us. We cannot escape that the entirety of ourselves are the genetic foundations forming our biological structure that provides us with impulses and responses, and that are governed by a mind mechanism of interaction of influence superceded by observation. These are the traits that suited the rest of the human beings traits in the context of the natural world, the mechanics of the mind and of the brain fit the mechanics of the body. We may struggle with identity, we may formulate introspective, subjective interpretations on the meaning and relevance of our minds, but we must at the end of it all simply accept what it is that we are, including the illusion of the self.

While your observations are true in one sense they lack inquery into recombination and therefore are not the complete truth. The fact that you adhere to them, for whatever reasons, and attempt to deny the presence of self that is necessarily present for our biology to function, and that you have not concluded this yourself; this proves the presence of an interfering ego that is inescapable for you as it is for everyone else. The acceptance of it, and the re-integration of it into your perspective; a perspective that you can never escape; is essential to surpass it.

However the desire to surpass it is irrelevant. We can agree on this. What is also irrelevant is your nihilistic disregard of its presence, implication, and biological necessity.
average wrote: Yep, it is neat.
I am glad you enjoy it. A statement that is irrelevant.
Shahrazad wrote:Sapius, so they were pretty much random choices made by Average's mind?
Not random; irrelevant, but still made, hence the proof of his inescapable ego.
maestro wrote: Why does the witness not come and go as anything else? How does it witness things, you mean using senses the all pervading soul witnesses the universe?
First: birth. Second: biology of the mind. Third: soul is what you call it, a word that carries irrelevant complexities of the subjects fears.
What is pure consciousness pray tell, and how did it derive its apparent indestructibility.
Observation; many eastern philosophies attempt to tell us this in a roundabout way, and it is not indestructible like any other part of the human mind.

Just you keep repeating that over and over, to a crowd you desired to participate within, and eventually you will realise the fundamental inaccuracy of that statement. Sometimes fervent denial has it plus points.

Your journey here, desire to post, and repitition of your arguement may well be inevitable, but that is because of your ego, not inspite of it, not because of its absence.

I am here because the entirety of me, my ability to observe my thoughts and my biology, enjoys doing exactly this, making my search for a forum such as this inevitable at the specific time at which I did so, given the factors involved.

Denying ego, and perceiving this in a nihilistic fashion is to me irrelevant. Just like the motivation behind your arguement; desire to express yourself; defeats its content.

While your statement is interesting, it has obviously run its course, and requires no further elaboration untill you have something to elaborate upon. Further repitition of your ego driven one liners has even less point than your self admitted pointless first post.

You have obviously decided to stick with what you have because it suits your persona. It is also obvious that even the slightest step beyond the conclusions of your opening statement reveals a wealth of intellectually stimulating avenues of thought. I thank you for bringing this "observation" to my attention, but none the less note your inertia and denial. I will finish stating the obvious as it is affecting my ego.
Sapius wrote:Really? So I can’t choose 1+2 or 4+1 to achieve a desired result?
The question is whether or not you can arrive at a conclusion without being influenced by all that is going on in your head. The answer to that would be no. Your answer in a mathematical sense will be determined by your level of knowledge of mathematics, the level of accuracy you wish to attain or if indeed you wish to be accurate at all which is fundamentally determined by your personality, your mood, among other things.

Frankly it is my perception of things that the human brain leads the human brain to conclusions like gravity leads water down a slope. My bladder is full and I am walking past the kitchen on the way to the bathroom so I put the kettle on so that it will have boiled by the time I am done. Decision? No. Logical addressment of needs and desires.

I am a subjective being, therefore fundamentally flawed as an analytical tool, and am easilly capable of being wrong. If you have anything to add to my perception, or indeed your own, by all means please do. Just do not assume free will because you think you have chosen, and you like the idea of being in control.

My interpretation of individuality is untouched, unquestioned, and uninfluenced by Average's statements. It easilly fits in well with what he is saying. Therefore I was questioning your grasp on subjectivity, as obviously your interpretation is diametrically opposed to the principle that Average was putting forth.

I had interpreted it to mean that while earlier you believed in the all pervading consciousness theory, you have found the theory to be inconsistent with your experience, and now find that consciousness is a product of the conditions and is neither indestructible nor all pervading.

Until you contradicted this and said you still believe in the all pervading and indestructible consciousness, and are using different words to convey your ideas.

You see, I’m not an academically trained philosopher, nor am I highly educated, but I believe conclusions belong to the concluder, irrelevant of external influences, which I don’t deny.

Sure, the system is causality, but there is a factor of “I” in between; there is a particular thing thinking/reasoning, and such capabilities produce comparable individualities, that logically asses the need and desires of a Self. I might not put the kettle on; there might be number of reasons not directly dependent on some inherent "causality", but my particular Self in between, although in a causal manner pertaining to a particular self.

Well, I gave you a glimpse of my interpretation above. Average can enjoy his own of course, as do I. I don’t/can’t deny a self, however non-inherent that that may be. Generally it is from an absolutely different perspective, but people seem to enjoy confusing others just to look smart. Why don't they structure sentences so there is no ambiguity?

Sapius wrote:You see, I’m not an academically trained philosopher, nor am I highly educated, but I believe conclusions belong to the concluder, irrelevant of external influences, which I don’t deny.
It is external influences interacting with internal influences that will determine whether or not you even want to come to a conclusion. They might have no bearing on the current outcome, but that is because a series of emotions/memories/values has lead you directly to conclude that right now this precise situation requires the effort to arrive at a mathematically consistent and logically outcome to the best of your ability.

Conclusions belong to the concluder, no doubt, there is no doubt that that specific interworkings of biology, memory, emotion and thought are completely unique and wholly belong to the one individual, but that does not mean they do not follow specific rules, that does not mean they are free from the interaction the brain has evolved to allow, and it especially does not mean that one is necessarilly "free" at any point at any time to come to any conclusion.

The complexities of the brain allow us to be aware of ourselves, but ourselves is a biological machine. Our awareness itself influences the brain, plays a primary role in manipulating information, but that manipulation is governed by "how we feel", "what we think", "our values" etc. which are all influences manipulated by biology and mind. The body is a source of input of sensory information and biological impulses, the brain a mechanism of observation and information interaction. We might be aware and individual but it does not follow that we are necessarily free.
Sapius wrote:Sure, the system is causality, but there is a factor of “I” in between; there is a particular thing thinking/reasoning, and such capabilities produce comparable individualities, that logically asses the need and desires of a Self. There absolutely does exist the factor of "I" inbetween. It is so absolutely fine tuned into the workings of the human mind that even those that claim to ignore it or to have removed it still behave exactly as they would should it exist completely at the forefront of their minds.

But we must understand this "Self" in its proper context and not merely become obsessively fascinated by its presence in our own minds. The "Self" is an inherent feature in human brains, fundamental to human brains, therefore it is a product of evolution. A heightened sense of "Self" combined to a powerful intellect capable of understanding, and exploiting, the world and combined to a physiology capable of fine manipulation has essentially become the most powerful tool for surviving and thriving the natural environment, indeed for operating within this Universe, that we know of. It may prove to be "self" defeating in the long run, who knows. The "Self" is essential for forming and understanding relationships between things. At the fundamental level awareness of being able to observe and awareness of what you appear to be observing is the first and primary distinction, giving rise to the first and primary conceptions of order and understanding.

When viewed from this perspective what you have then is a "Self" that is governed from inception not only by rules but immediatly by the influences created upon the "Self" by those rules. Without observation of "Self the perceiver" as distinct from "object of perception" there is nothing for the awareness to conceptualise, to think upon. Without having both "Self the perceiver" and "object of perception" one cannot formulate the first sense of understanding, and one cannot draw distinction. Indeed one cannot be other than a conduit of unfiltered, unprocessed noise.

Once the system of filtration and process begins, it becomes a primary source of further input, always governed by the awareness that the system allowing observation is fundamental to the entire process, and it is this system allowing observation that the infantile "Self" most readilly identifies with, because it is the system that allowed the first conception of "Self".

In evolutionary terms, a human being that does not formulate a sense of "Self" from the outset is one least capable of surviving in a natural environment. The brain is inherantly formed to produce this sense of "Self" the moment the first data arrives within it, for this allows distinction and conception, produces understanding and relationship, and creates a human pyschology that is of extreme capability within the natural world. Those born lacking in this fundamental relationship are for us now objects of deep fascination, but at the same time they are individuals wholly unsuited to operation within the world as we both know it, and have now formed it.

Any choice you appear to make is akin to an aspect of a maelstrom reaching crescendo within your mind. Which you observe and act upon. Any idea you appear to formulate is like a pattern formed by multicoloured inks in motion, which you observe, and recognise. These same mechanisms which you are capable of observing, are also capable of determining how you observe, why you observe, what you are looking for, and how focused you wish to be. The results of your observations, ideas and decisions are released into the mind like another ink.

Think on this, if the intensities, quantities, and variations of "ink dyes" are equated to molecular compounds, electrical signals, and all the machinery of the brain, then the brain is an utterly vast set of interacting patterns. The deepest recesses of the brains biology could hold the slowly metabolising remains of decades old memories, that are themselves still slighty in some small way interacting with their surroundings in a subtle fashion, untill both a particular thought environment is recreated by the brain that produces an awareness of recognition, and that metabolising memory suddenly becomes a chemical to which vast realisations and implications are suddenly recognised to have a profound relevance. A new, interpretated memory will be created, the original may never actually reappear in its true whole form, but the mind itself is aware not of the specifics of the memory, but of the importance of the implications its presence had.

Sapius wrote:I am not in absolute control, but consciousness provides me with certain degrees of control. To say the least, as a thing, am I not the CAUSE of something else at the same time? I am like a dog on a leash and can move around as far as my leash allows, but am bound however.
You are absolutely a cause, but you cannot choose to cause. You simply are what you are. "Self" is almost completely identified with "Free Will" but the idea of "Free Will" itself is fallacious, for if it is free it is without influence but if it is will then it is the combined desire of all influence. Will is not choice, Will is the relationship between desire, focus, resolve, intent. Will is the combined unity of every cognition, emotion and perception that reveals your entire relationship to an object of desire. Where there is Will, there can never be a choice.

Every choice is the result of influences in the mind achieving an equilibrium in relationship to the strength, frequency and implication of the underlying influences of those influences. Your bladder gets that bit more full, the signal travels up your body to your brain, and you immediatly formulate a conclusion: I will attempt to ignore this discomfort untill I finish this post as I do not want my train of thought interrupted, or I will go quickly and remove this distracting nuisance. What matters and determines the outcome is the intensity of the distraction + all other things that contribute to make up the content of your mind.

The denial of self is psychologically motivated (ironically) not factually true. The existence of "Self" is not negated by the fact it is an illusion within the mind, but explained by it. Anyone can claim the self is irrelevant or an illusion, and in some contexts be accurate, although these are subjective contexts of subjective relevance. Anyone that speaks on the "Self" but does not elaborate on its biopsychological origin, importance and implication is speaking only about their "Self".

My sense of individuality, whether my individuality or anothers, is impacted or inconsistent in no way by Average's statements. I just reject his anlysis as incomplete.

Agreed. In a numbering system that counts {8,5,2,7,X,3,E,1,!,*}, the sum of "2" and "2" would be "6".

Given the parameters that you are both using, choices are made. I am not convinced that "individual intellectual reasoning" does not include the element of "choice". In order to reduce "choice" to a "cause and effect" phenomenon, one must also reduce the ideas of "individual" and "reasoning" to the bare neurological level. It is my understanding of the subject that humans do not actually make choices, but we all behave in such different ways and our brains operate sufficiently swiftly to give the appearance of a Cartesian homunculus making conscious choices.

Steven, you make the mistake of looking more deeply into "choice" than Sapius intended, and Sapius, I suppose, made the mistake of assuming that his declaration of free-will would go unchecked.

Steven;

Well explained; you might not believe, but in my own way I have thought over all you have said, and reached a certain different conclusion. Will get back to you post in details if need be (it’s quite long), but may be what I say to Ataxas is the crux of the matter.

Ataxas;
Steven, you make the mistake of looking more deeply into "choice" than Sapius intended, and Sapius, I suppose, made the mistake of assuming that his declaration of free-will would go unchecked.
I wouldn’t want it go unchecked, without which, understanding would mean nothing. Simply believing is not good enough for me.
Shouldn’t one then reduce the idea of ‘conscious’ too?

According to me, more complex a consciousness causality creates, (say that of a human as against a cow), the higher the degree of decision making power does IT have, (otherwise ‘reasoning’ is absolutely meaningless in our case, and so are conclusions), although the core system of an individuals decision making is causal in nature, the data can be processed by an individual thing to churn out diverse and unique results. These results must hold comparative meaning as in right/wrong, otherwise, logic is meaningless on which they are based. Making logic an illusion too. Now is logic an illusion? Is consciousness an illusion?

I might not be able to explain coherently, because I have a different big picture in mind, and that cannot be painted in one stroke.

The point here is the question of whether or not "consciousness" can be reduced. I maintain that it can, and should, when considering philosophically the question of "free-will", and I gave an avenue of inquiry by which reduction could be explored.
