Mikiel,
Try to envision a perpetual cycle. What, in your mind, came before your 'beginning?' Whence came the cosmos? How will it "end?"
Contemplate the absurdity of "something out of nothing" (be it religious or "scientific.?")
I have asked these questions before in this thread and elsewhere, and no answers have come in reply... ever!
Of course, something from nothing ain't gonna happen. I have asked these questions as well, and no answers are forthcoming.
I'm not sure where you are agreeing, and where disagreeing. I think the cosmos is probably cyclic, but something underlies it that gives it rise and fall.
The cosmos may end in dissolution, but it will rise again.
Kelly,
It seems you define causation as a domino-like effect, where one thing leads to another in time.
More or less, yes. It is very difficult for me to envision timelessness.
Thus, you believe there is something before causation, which logically would have to be time.
I don't think it would have to be time.
This means causation, as you appear to be conceiving of it, is still in force.
I'm not quite sure of your point. I think you are saying I have not stepped outside of causation. But that is because I can't figure out how.
David,
I will show you how it is emotional. But to do so, I first need to ask why you believe the idea of cause and effect going back indefinitely is illogical.
I thought I already stated it succinctly. If cause and effect go back indefinitely, it is turtles all the way down. All effects require causes, so how to get it started. And how to get a cosmos from - what? Nothingness? No way. Do you not see that there is something we can't quite put our finger on that is mind boggling?
Every generation thinks this. But the truth is, even if cosmologists were to spend the next million years doing nothing alse but observe the universe and develop cosmological theories, they still wouldn't advance an inch closer to understanding the nature of reality. It is the wrong tool for the task.
Well, I don't just mean cosmologists. Particle physicists and whatnot, too. It is possible that without a sound philosophy, they cannot use science to achieve the heights you speak of, but I think it is incorrect to say they won't move an inch. Well, it is your hyperbolic style. But see, the alternative science I read about, should it prove sound, already will dispel the idea of a universe of separate items, showing a fully interconnected reality, which will tend to disabuse people of many wrong ideas and give them a better foundation for philosophy.
Surely, better knowledge of how the universe works can only provide assistance toward better spiritual ideas.
From the largest possible perspective, Nature is timeless, beyond life and death, and entirely without form. It is formless like a void, and yet it is so formless that it doesn't even have the form of a void. It neither exists, nor not exists. It is neither conscious, nor unconscious. It is neither finite, nor infinite. It is neither substantial, nor empty. No dualistic categories can be applied to it. Yet it is everythng that we see around us.
This may be correct, but you can see it is a koan.
Truth is a pathless land.
