A Balanced lifestyle
A Balanced lifestyle
I was wondering whether the lifestyle, which I describe below is possible in the modern economy. What I had in mind was the following, I wish to work for say 6 months and then take the rest of 6 months off doing whatever I want to do (travelling reading, etc), and repeat this cycle again. I am finishing graduate school and the thought of being chained to a job, till I die gives me the creeps. I think the high tech industry or finance industry pays one well enough so that 6 month work ought to take care of the yearly expenses. Any advice on how do I implement this sort of lifestyle, would be very welcome.
Re: A Balanced lifestyle
Get a job in the cruise ship industry, on a ship. I believe they operate in just this way; one is on for months and then off completely.
BTW, this is a worldly matter.

Re: A Balanced lifestyle
No a cruise ship does not match my qualifications. I was thinking more along the lines of independent contractor for some company, I think somebody would have implemented this sort of lifestyle already, and might get tips from them or somebody known to them.
Re: A Balanced lifestyle
C'mon, man, cruise ships are exotic, you get to travel, meet women...

Re: A Balanced lifestyle
I think it is the cargo and trading ship industry which pays one well enough and implements the 6/6 month lifestyle, maybe because the sailors live a long time away from home. Not sure this works with cruise ships. That may be a good choice for say a marine engineer, which I am not. I am more of a applied mathematics and technical person, hence wanted to see how this works in the finance and tech industries.

All serious questions:
What is your graduate degree in?
What country (and what coast, if the USA) do you live in?
Have you EVER had a realjob? - I tend not to hire the 'just out of college-types' at my businesses who've never had as much as a blister on a finger.
Do you have 150 tattoos and 26 nose rings?
Six months "work" - six months vacation ... just out of graduate school wouldn't cut it for me. Doubtful my hiring manager, would give you a second look - then you'd have to get past my "sniff test" (thanks Elizabeth
Really, I wouldn't hire you if you showed up and said "I'm available six months of the year."
Best you apply yourself at the minimum, 5 years, full-time, at whatever your degree(s) are in.
Hit the ground floor, running. All work, no play.
ps- Lose that insane avatar.

I'm shocked, Tomas. You hold down a real job? CEO, no less??

A2M with a Snickers bar.
Re: A Balanced lifestyle
The reason I put this in the Genius forum is because this question is about the middle path. Some forum members here prefer unemployment, while other work full time. Both are extreme positions, I therefore wanted to explore if there is an alternative in the modern economy.

And what are those businesses?

maestro,

My sister got a job in a Greenpeace ship, where she would get paid two month's salary for each month she worked. On top of the salary, she got to travel around the world. I would've gone for it, too. She is a young medical doctor. I'm not sure if your skills are in demand for the shipping industry, but it may be worth looking into.I think it is the cargo and trading ship industry which pays one well enough and implements the 6/6 month lifestyle, maybe because the sailors live a long time away from home.

Re: A Balanced lifestyle
Dan, yes it is. This is about as serious as it gets. Maestro is making decisions that will affect the rest of his life. I personally have no advice to give - I'm not convinced I have learned all I can from my own mistakes.Dan Rowden wrote:No it isn't.maestro wrote:The reason I put this in the Genius forum is because this question is about the middle path.

Re: A Balanced lifestyle
You clearly have no idea what the term "middle path" refers to. It may be important, but it has nothing to do with that.
Re: A Balanced lifestyle
You are talking as if your understanding is the final authority on the Buddha. Livelihood and lifestyle is an important business, and the middle path applies here as elsewhere.

Re: A Balanced lifestyle
Not to burst your bubble, Dan, but I know very well what the "middle path is." Maestro has asked for advice from the GFers. He has asked a very good question. He is not a Philosospher, okay? He is actually trying to put into practice what you preach.Dan Rowden wrote:You clearly have no idea what the term "middle path" refers to. It may be important, but it has nothing to do with that.

Re: A Balanced lifestyle
I take your idea of the middle path is akin to the adage "moderation in all things" - is that right?

You're the admin, Dan.Dan Rowden wrote:I take your idea of the middle path is akin to the adage "moderation in all things" - is that right?
Question: Why is this thread on both Worldly and Genius?
Thanks,
Tomas

Not any more! Laird will flip a coin and decide where this belongs.
No more "middle of the road" around these parts!
Come on, Laird!

I suspect we have rather different notions of what the term means. This dialogue from Genius News ought explain mine: Middle Waybrokenhead wrote:Including moderation, yes.Dan Rowden wrote:I take your idea of the middle path is akin to the adage "moderation in all things" - is that right?
