Life is a battle of values, Katy. There's no getting round that. That's all that's really happening - value wars.
If it's about values, why is it so personal?
Well, values are personal things. But it also depends how much one is attached to their values (and to what extent a person is a rational being). In Nat's case there's the added difficulty of him not knowing from one week to the next what he really does values...
On the message board Steel Woods, there is a forum called "Hoot 'N Holler" which has this thread. There's nothing damning over there, just an illustration of silliness.
Hmm, I dunno that there's nothing "damning" there. What is said about "intellectuals" and the illusion to who that category contains, seems pretty damning to me. If nothing else it's rather damning of sanity.
I think the thing about "intellectuals" is that they spend too much time concentrating on the why and how of life, instead of the what. Like cute little puppies, and babies, and hugging or caring for another person.
Aw, c'mon - how can this post even be taken seriously? That thread is too inane to be damning.
It might be my imagination, but I think Philosophaster does have a bit of soul or conscience in him. There is the seed of eternity there. But he is having difficulties facing it at the moment. He feels a need to keep running away from it. Nat serves a purpose in that he is able to keep distracting him from having to look into it.
Frivolity is what Philosophaster is hungering for, at this stage in his life.

Yeah, but it's for your own safety. We don't want you guys to go into seizures from an overdose of feminine frivolity or anything like that. ;-)
Well, feminine frivolity isn't really especially interesting. Masculine irony and evisceration with a rusty butter knife are much more entertaining. Ask Mel Gibson. You could see how much fun he was having in that scene from Braveheart.
