What college education should tomorrow's doctors have?

Post by kid_nightflyer »

I see two different options here:

1. Tomorrow's doctors should have a strong background in chemistry and biology, much like the doctors of today, the reason being that the reductionist movement in medicine is futile and we will never be able to understand the biology of the human body in mathematical and physical terms, as suggested by Roger Penrose and Paul Davies among others.

2. Tomorrow's doctors should have a strong background in math, physics (especially nano-technology), computer science and so on, the reason being that medicine is turning into a complex information technology, as suggested by Ray Kurzweil among others.

Physics is also important to know about for the functioning of the body. For example, cancer metastasizes by shedding cells off the primary tumor, which lodge elsewhere in the body and start growing as independent tumors. If doctors understood more about physics, they would be able to screen/treat more carefully in the areas downstream of the primary tumor and catch more metastases.

Good topic, I will think on it some more.

In addition to the above and what they already take, add logic & critical thinking, nutrition, human relations (basically meaning "people skills" so they can work better with others and with their patients), compassion (that needs to be a separate segment from people skills, but could all be lumped into one course "Psychology for the Medical Profession" or something), multiculturalism, herbalism, botany, and electricity.
