It seems you misunderstood. As I said before permanency is not in the sense of eternity but a lifetime. Like your breath is permanent.Cory Duchesne wrote: Do you agree the body is the lamp from which our consciousness burns?
The lamp will eventually run out of oil. The body will eventually wither and pass away.

Re: Creation of the Soul
Well, you could do that if you think running away is a solution. But wouldn't it be better to change the content and style of your posts so that you no longer cause suffering to people?clyde wrote: What is your point? I was not assigning fault, but seeking a solution that did not require me to leave.
Do you experience suffering from my posts? Is it my posts or do all posts, in your view, create suffering?
This is your forum. I am not here to cause you or others suffering. Do you want me to leave?

The Shape of Eternity
Number Pi, and its infinity, the beginning is a pyramid.
And the radius juts into the center.
Where the sitter sits, and may view eternity spin.
The stars, above it all.
However, it is the circle itself.
which does stand,
the more perfect man.
And the salt,
I find it scatter,
into the windows of upstairs
where steps lead me to take,
All food and resource of my own.
From the lamplight and the owl
And there I watched the sixty tree ring wood grains
The birds, with green grubs grow
Swimming oxen, bathing in their horns
And behind my eyes, I covered adorned jewels for the past
Memories once locked behind the tiny cut door
-
And all told it to me.
Up or down,
Does roll the sea.

David;
It's not "running away" to cease conduct that causes others suffering; its the manifestation of wisdom and compassion. If my posting actually causes more harm than benefit, I should cease posting.
If you can suggest specific changes to the content and/or style of my posts so that my posts create less harm and more benefit, please do.

Re: Creation of the Soul
By permanent, I did not mean forever. I meant for the remainder of this lifetime. I'm talking about a unification of many I's within oneself. I'm talking about centering and grounding an authentic and constant self within. You seem to have trouble understanding what I'm saying. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with this concept. It is part of the world's core esoteric religions.Cory Duchesne wrote:I can see value in striving to survive indefinitely - but what reasons do I have for believing in the permanency of my consciousness?Carl G wrote: Cory, you don't see value in permanentizing a desire for truth, for consciousness, for being, for doing?
However, it may indeed be possible for a crystallized "I" to survive physical death, according to Gurdjieff,
You missed my point. I said you do not see a reason for a permanentized self, nevertheless a permanentized self is what happens if conditions are right -- like a flower blooming. You want to argue against natural occurrences?A flower is not permanent, Carl. It withers and dies.And, you do not see a reason for it, and yet this is what happens, or can happen if conditions are right. Do you think a flower blossoming is arbitrary and irrational, also?

You could start valuing truth, but then that would only cause suffering to those who depend on false views and attachments.clyde wrote:David;

Alternatively, you could stay as you are, but that would only continue to cause suffering to those who value truth.
You're in a bind, it seems to me.

Re: Creation of the Soul
Do you think people do harm?
Re: Creation of the Soul
Dan;
I assume you know the answer, but I will answer: Yes, some people some times intentionally or thoughtlessly act (or not act) to cause other human beings unneccessary pain and suffering.
clyde
p.s: Please, let us not debate whether a human being can be 'perfectly harmless'; one can't, but one can minimize the unneccessary pain and suffering one causes others.

One can only minimize it by helping people become immune to harm.

I do not entirely agree. While an enlightened human being may not experience some forms of psychological or mental suffering, even an enlightened human being feels pain which is a form of harm; so one can still minimize the harm one causes.

Of course you are. But it is plain that you don't want to be conscious of it.clyde wrote:David;

If a person isn't causing others to suffer over their attachment to false views, then he is an aimless fraud.

He may be aimless nonetheless if he is attached to his views.
