vision/the eyes of the wise. the open mind

Post by eugenius »

this is my first post, i'm kinda pumped to find a forum like this. this is what i'm all about, i've been reading some of the other threads, its nice to know i'm not alone on a lot of things.
i'm one of those people that others sometimes see as crazy, or i dont make any sense(even though i can explain anything i know down to the level of the understanding of a middle schooler) and many of my friends actually know that i'm a genius.

bla bla bla......ok on to the subject.

in the time that you guys and gals get to know me, you may read a few of my poems, its my best and favorite way of explaining things.
i'll start off with a quote

vision is the art of seeing things invisible to others. Jonathon Swift

i have noticed in talking to all the people in my life that most people's minds cannot open, causing them to be blind, stuck in the mindstate of what most people see as reality.
reality is a whole other subject to get into, i'll explain that long explanation if need be.
but, without the open mind, one is blind to truth and cannot grasp true wisdom.
now when i say an open mind, i dont mean that you will beleive anything because your mind is open.
but you will take into consideration ANYTHING! until you make sense out of it.
it may only take 1 second to make sense out of it, or it may take days. but to block out possibilities simply because the thought is outside of YOURE reality is a very blind way of thinking, and therefore you cannot be wise.

Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. one helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life. Sandara Carey

i give these quotes not because the person who said it is a proven absolute genius, but because they make sense. next subject, what is sense? lol

back on subject, reading in these forums i read people who are intelligent, book smart, and make sense, but only within the scientific definitions of reality.
and if you let science tell you what reality is, you are mentally trapped.

theres a percentage of the world thats blind yet i can see
like the eagle see's the forest but the squirrel just see's some tree's.
and though the squirrel may know the tree's by every leaf and every branch
i see everything at once, and it only takes a glance. Walter Griffen

my poetical explanation of the open mind.

a good quote i have from a very wise friend of mine should be used in everyday debate's and arguments.
Just because i dont think its right, doesnt mean its wrong. Angela Davis

many times within these debates we have on these forums you will see 2 people that feel they are right, and it is a fact, wich opposes the others feelings.
if your mind is not open, you will not be able to see the possibility that you are both right.

in a small example me and my cousin were in an argument about the gun laws in washington state. i said that this state is an open carry state, and he said no, he looked it up and you cannot open carry here in this city.
truth is we found out later, it is an open carry state, though it is opposed in most major city's in the state.

Geniune tragedies in the world are not conflicts between right and wrong. they are conflicts between 2 rights. Georg Hegel

how bout i shut up and wait for some feedback lol

Do you think typing your posts in all lower-case letters is cute?

Eugenius, welcome.

You'll have to do better than that. Please try to structure a few things in your thinking so we can understand.

What is your view on what reality is? Be careful not to think too quickly your view on reality is so much more, wider or better than the mindstates you witness in others. There are a lot of traps waiting here and 99% of the smart folks fall into it.

I wouldn't say there are many booksmart people at this forum. They might sound like that because they are writing about the subjects for quite a while and picked up a few things and perhaps unlearned a few others. That can seem impressive on first glance but it's not booksmart. Actually many critics of this forum claim it's not intellectual enough, other find it too much focused on reason and logic. You figure it out!

Scientific definitions of reality? Science does not define reality, not for those understanding science. It gave up on that long ago. If you mean materialism, then that's another topic. It's in the animal nature of people to be trapped, but just as easily in spiritualism.

While it certainly is true that many debates are more fruitful when there's some kind of dialogue that strives for a synthesis, seeing the possible truth in the other position, it's not really helpful if the topics discussed are of a less relative nature. I'm sure you can make up a few hypothetical discussions where there's no middle way, no synthesis possible without ending up in some huge contradiction. Within philosophy these discussion are typical, like: one experiences existence, or not.

Whats real. fraggle rocks are make beleive, they are not real. the world of fraggle rocks is not reality, its fiction.

1. the state or quality of being real.
2. resemblance to what is real.
3. a real thing or fact.
4. real things, facts, or events taken as a whole; state of affairs: the reality of the business world; vacationing to escape reality.
5. Philosophy. a. something that exists independently of ideas concerning it.
b. something that exists independently of all other things and from which all other things derive.

6. something that is real.
7. something that constitutes a real or actual thing, as distinguished from something that is merely apparent.

if science has not proven something to be real, or true, many people beleive that it is indeed not true.
haven't you ever heard someone say "that has not been scientifically proven" wich shuts there mind down from the possibility all together?

well if you havnt i have, many many times.

if science proves that the aliens and ufo's people claim to see all the time are real. most people will beleive it.
they indeed let sceince controll there reality.
of course this would have to be an agreement between most scientists all over the globe.

but of course, i didnt mean in every debate. i'll make sure to add "many times" before i submit my posts for now on.

eugenius, it's much better to say "Plato thought Reality was such-and-such, and I agree with him" than "dictionary.com says Reality is thus, and I agree." Still better is "I think Reality is so-and-so", since only that would have answered Diebert's question.
if science has not proven something to be real, or true, many people beleive that it is indeed not true.

Just inform them that science itself hasn't been scientifically proven, and blow their minds. You use other ways of knowing to establish that science works.

the reason i posted what dictionary.com says is because i am only going off of the definition of reality.
if reality has a different definition, i would explain myself accordingly to what the actual definition is.

i understand that there may be other opinions for what reality means.

i'm sorry if posting a reference for what i was speaking about is a bad thing in these forums.
i guess i have to adjust.

I find that unbelievable, since you said, "back on subject, reading in these forums i read people who are intelligent, book smart, and make sense, but only within the scientific definitions of reality". There were no scientific definitions of reality on dictionary.com; there was a philosophic definition, however. You went to dictionary.com only after you were asked the question, so you were not going off that definition. From dictionary.com, I have no clue what you mean when you point to scientific definitions. If you want to answer Diebert's question, you'll have to explain what you mean by reality.

Furthermore, you said, "...if you let science tell you what reality is, you are mentally trapped", which is ironic, because going off of what the dictionary tells you reality is is far clumsier than going off of what a scientist might say. The dictionary is the far worse trap. You are somewhat redeemed by the fact that you only used it after you referenced it.

I think you'd find it quite hard to explain what scientific definitions of reality are, anyway. Science does not say what reality is. That's what metaphysics does. A scientist might occasionally dabble in ontology (a branch of metaphysics), for instance when he claims that reality is composed of matter, energy, and various forces. But then he's engaging in philosophy, not science, and I know of no philosopher who would take a claim like that as definitive, since few scientists are thorough when they try thinking philosophically. The careful, skeptical, methodical scientific mind shuts down outside of its narrow range of interests.

Then again, metaphysics, the study of reality, is seen as kind of pointless and useless, even within philosophy departments. All the worst prejudices toward philosophy are given life by the metaphysicists.

to my ignorance, i thought that the dictionary definition of reality WAS the scientific definition.

this does not mean that my reality is the same as he who made the definition on dictionary.com or webster or any other dictionary.

if i beleive in aliens, my reality is different from he or she who does not beleive in aliens.

still the definition of reality, does not mean that everyone's reality is the same.
which is why i said that if you let science tell you what reality is...meaning that if you let sceince tell you whats real and whats not, then you are mentally trapped.

do you still find it unbeleivable?
