PS - Forgot to add some ass-kicking hashish. Lebanese when I was there. Some black hash when I was in Iraq in the late 1980s before Bush 41 went ballistic. Some decent hash in VietNam. And best of all, the hashish that flows down from Canada all those years later .. to present. God Save The Queen! Don't bogart that joint, my friend.

PS - I've no interest in man-made dxm drugs. Get it ;-)

well i must say weed is not any of my concern, its not in my league if you think for even a second that what i'm saying has anything to do with your pitiful weed shit, go to fucking sleep, this is above you and what you are

I don't know what planet you live on but I hailed from North Dakota.

I was merrily along my way with a few kids at age 20, a year of college already when-what? .. I received a Draft Notice. Congrats, you are going to kill some Asian boys overseas. You have one of three choices: Flee to Canada (and leave your girlfriend and children behind), go to Ft. Leavenworth (if you resist the draft) and live in a cage with some animal-man and get butt-fucked, or take your chances in VietNam.

I chose #3, well, it didn't turn out too badly .. I lost the sight in left eye, lost the hearing in left ear, lost the left lung (and two ribs) and lost the left kidney. All because I volunteered to go on extra patrol that day, we were short on replacements, there was heavy fighting that month. Am I bitter, heck no :-)

Presently, I am on kidney dialysis awaiting a kidney, pushing 60 is better than pushing up daisies.

PS - Enjoy your health while you have it. Really...

If you are not being prescribed these drugs by a licensed MD, you deserve the hell you are creating for your-self. No amount of namby-pamby will keep you from the appointed hour of death. Enjoy the zombie state, but be sure to eat healthy and drink reverse-osmosis water to stay hydrated. Have a good life it's your only opportunity this side of..........

The next 2 weeks I was convinced I was brain dead. I was convinced I would never come out of this experience normal. I had felt my brain actually shutting off and going into dis-repair. I felt as if I was watching myself being destroyed from the inside.

It was all the trip of course, it took me about a year to realize that, and being 20 now, I STILL gain wisdom from that experience to this day. It spurred my realizations in psychology and neurology, it shot me off to college (not to educate myself but to get the fuck away from everything I was associated with) and now I'm enjoying a much more beautiful life.

Sometimes those experiences are needed. Time cures all ails.
I've had some incredible mushroom trips myself, the last one being about 13 years ago. Awesome, full-on experiences that really knock your socks off - far more so than acid, which I've also tried a few times. And you're right, there are things you can learn about yourself, and about life more generally, that are very educational and yet would be utterly impossible to describe to someone else. A very existential drug, in my experience.

And yes, I have no desire to ever take it again.

i think your imagination is confined until you take the drugs. it opens 'the doors' to greater experiences. i just feel we can achieve this without the aid of drugs. they're not enlightening really, it's just looking at the world differently.

seeing blue as red and walls as water. humans enjoy escape from reality.

as for me, i have not been 'enlightened' in this sense so my input ends there.

I see your point and it's well taken.

That zombie is taking stuff he knows not will do to his system down the road (like he cares). Perhaps he would know which concoction he was tampering with, and that's why I was attempting to have him "narrow down" the phethora of pharma mixes available to him - he was/is/will be "experimenting" with. There's also the DXM that is "artificially sweetened" and has side effects all its own.

If he (she?) bothers to read this post I'd be interested to know if he is that slipshod with chemicals he places into his body why would mommy or daddy pour that stuff into their kid's throat. Much better to eat health than to revert to man-made chemical toxins with 100=+ side effects. Oh well...

PS - Plato said words to the effect, "the kids are running wild in the streets." Guess they were all 'shroomed up' on mushrooms imported from the Isle of Patmos.

lol, there is always so much ego surrounding the use of drugs. I remember when I first took up smoking weed how people would boast about how much they'd smoke in one sitting, or how big their joints were. There was this whole thing about finding new ways to smoke pot. My cousin and I fashioned an automatic lung system out of an air pump. We blew pressurized smoke into balloons and inhaled them. In hindsight there was the potential to oxygenate the cells of the lung membrane which probably isn't good. I also smoked cigarettes and still do and my lungs are fucked. The cost of smoking pot to me outweighs any high I get from it anymore, its simply habitual. I understand the mechanism now, its pretty basic and as a consequence I don't screw around with alcohol or other drugs. I'd be hesitant to do anything without moderation anymore. Because the basic mechanism that leads to destructive chemical addictions is the same as those that lead to all other habitual human behavior. Its no mystery although, apparently its pretty elusive knowledge. I mean, I didn't get it until I went looking for it specifically. No one ever pointed it out to me in any clear manner. People toss around unquantified cliches that lack intellectual substance. They are more or less things that you gradually realize through making mistakes and then one day think "Oh, now I get it!", but through studying the mind and brain I've been able to do that a lot more.

It must be realized that these mechanisms are not obvious because they are so ubiquitous concerning the human condition. When we perform an action we have an experience of it being the most desirable action, rationalization tends to come later. We don't even really think linguistically about our behavior, we are more or less weighing phenomenal sensations that represent a wide dataset. Its difficult to explain these mental processes, but the point is that virtually no decision ever arises from an obvious logical course prior to an action. There may be a semblance of logic, that is probably a pre-emptive rationalization. The mind will be inclined in a single direction more than others, it being the most salient feature of the content of the mind, its most probable option. It will throw out rational and briefly test it before engaging in the activity. Its not as if anyone ever sits down to right a complete expose on reality and their current situation before engaging in an activity, no one could live like this. All actions follow by some basic assumptions about reality, they are phenomenally transparent in that they appear more as described than logical deductions. The drive to experience drugs is manifest in the same way and is subtle, its like the drive to experience anything.

So lets put this in a real world scenario. When I began using drugs my attitude towards life was that it didn't matter. I was interested in checking things out and not dwelling too much on received wisdom. My interest in taking drugs was pretty low, but I wasn't opposed to it, and one day a friend produced a bunch of weed to smoke. My friend hadn't smoked it before either and had a medium interest in doing it as a result of his father growing it in the back yard. We smoked a joint in a tree-house in his backyard and I was blasted, I'm sure I fell out of the tree-house a few times disoriented and laughing my ass off. I also felt more drive to behave recklessly, although I was pretty reckless already.

Anyway, onto what happens next. Next the individual goes back for a second dosage because the first experience was pleasurable in some respect. As the individual consumes the substance the mind habituates to it, this effect is extremely subtle. It is only ever on reflection that one realizes they've increased their dosage in such large amounts. An individual will go from smoking a joint a month to an ounce a week without noticing a difference in dependency until they run out. When they run out they start "Jonesin'" for the substance. But now they can't wait a month to have another joint, they want the joint immediately. The change is so gradual that the individual often doesn't explicitly experience the change. The move up to an ounce a week is gradual and each addition is a matter of unconscious decision-making based on a physiological feedback. The nervous system compensates for the presence of the substance in order to maintain equilibrium. The entire organism is characterized by homeostasis, it is a very important aspect of mind and body. When something interferes with the equilibrium the system attempts to compensate, the compensatory mechanism learns the pattern of behavior of consuming the substance and it pre-emptively produces changes in the body to compensate for the influx of the substance. Now as the substance is consumed it produces reduced psychical effects and the individual may think "I should smoke another joint, that last one didn't quite do the trick.".

Its just so obvious what the problem is, but this is the basic mechanism of reward that drives all such behavior. If a person derives joy from seeing a movie, they probably watch more movies and become addicted to watching movies and be upset when they are unable to. Whatever the experience there is a degree of habituation to it, some experiences more than others. Certainly sex, drugs and rock and roll are more addictive than a lot of things. There is nothing inherently wrong with consuming anything, except the habit, the attachment. You have to take stock of the mental processes which are involved and sort them out, manage them and destroy them. I'm learning this as I combat my addictions, I'm not a success story, I just know how it works. I suppose there is a trick to quiting cold-turkey and I don't know what it is, a person would probably have to find that within their own mind. But in terms of a systematic reduction, it is biologically feasible, and logically certain that the inverse of the habitual process works too. If you are punished for and consciously avoid the behavior you will sub-consciously unlearn it by a slow gradual progression.

If there are other reasons, like for example I prefer not to drink alcohol as a result of the brain damage it causes and the lapses in judgement and conscious awareness, violent outbursts of vomiting. I'm not really built to process alcohol with my gastrointestinal problems. Then why even bother with it to begin with? Not knowing what something is like is much more desirable to finding out directly how much it really messes up your life. There is no pride to be found in the consumption of these substances. Only a fool unnecessarily brings doom upon himself for a transient pleasure of the senses. That is all adolescence and just because something is so habit-formed does not make it valuable.

How are we failing do get this right? How does the obvious nature of these things elude us almost entirely and become egoic battles over who does the hardest drugs or experiences the craziest shit?

Good observation. My high is higher than your high, nobody knows the troubles I’ve seen ... the mighty ego.

Thomas S. Szasz, M.D. is an iconoclastic thinker who advocates personal responsibility, and who is critical of modern society’s faith in science.

From his short essay: The Bought Mind
http://www.szasz.com/iol13.html

“Sooner or later we will have to confront the question, is ingesting illegal drugs a disease? At present, the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American government maintain that it is. That is not what they maintained before World War II. If drug abuse is a disease, like diabetes, then its effective treatment by prayer is nothing short of a bona fide "miraculous cure," such as the Catholic Church requires for beatification. And if drug abuse is not a disease, then the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American government are committing a colossal fraud against the American people.

“Using, abusing, and not using drugs are decisions. Using a drug (or sex) solely for the purpose of giving oneself pleasure used to be called a "sin" by Puritans, and a "bad habit" by persons less certain about God's will. They were on the right track. Drug abuse is neither a disease (except metaphorically), nor a crime (unless we make it so). Drug abuse is a problem of desire: if people did not want drugs, there would be no drug users and no drug abusers. The desire for drugs has its source in two of the now all-but-forgotten "deadly sins," lust and gluttony. People lust after the pleasures drugs can give, and abuse drugs as gluttonously as they abuse food, sex, and often other people.”

Exactly vend3r - like I said,

No one is looking to compare trips. I create you in my trips, I am god upon all things, how far do yours go? I don't care because it doesn't matter. What matters is you growing from what you've experience, not confining it in a box, but rather taking it out and living with it.

vend3r:

You mention that you are largely self-taught, so I posted a poem in the poetry thread that you may not have ever had the opportunity to study.

It’s basic, classic advice about life rather than a direct response to your initial posting.

Here’s the link. It’s called If, by Rudyard Kipling.

To respond to your initial posting, I'd say that even though drug use can be useful for the reasons already stated in this thread, in your case, quit taking them.

You’ve been through that door enough times to know where it leads. Now you are just going back and forth through the same door seeking some kind of functional equilibrium, which is not the same as sacred usage, not even the same as gaining wisdom from the experience.

For that reason I’d say don’t ever use drugs again. Begin by allowing your body to heal itself, find wisdom in the experience of a drug-free state.

One thing you’ll find is that even food is a powerful sense-altering drug. The one who discovers this is the same one who observes the effects of drugs. This same one was even around in a different body, when you were a child. It will be the same one who observes experiences when you have a new body. (Body components perpetually regenerate and replicate into a new body, at various rates. Hair and nails are a good example of getting new body parts.)

Experiences come and go. The important thing is to be comfortable with, and to fully understand, this one who observes the experiences.

You're not going to agree with alot of this, but alot of us know what you've seen, and we're handing down our knowledge. Take it with a grain of salt, but it can be as helpful as anything else.
