Brainwave Software

Post by Matt Gregory »

You guys are probably going to laugh, but this software is pretty cool. It relaxes you and stuff. It can supposedly change your attitude and help you overcome psychological quirks. Try it:

I'm not laughing. I have used Brainwave entrainment software in the past, extensively.

It's not something to be toyed with, it works, it's very powerful if you use it over a long period of time. Permanent alteration of your brain chemistry.

Laugh? Nah, I've used NP a number of times. I don't know that the research behind brainwave entrainment is particularly rigorous, but I do find some of the sessions relaxing. They also provide a good background noise when I want to drown out Judge Insert Name Here blaring on the TV.

I've also used BWG (BrainWave Generator, the free dealie) on occassion, although I haven't had great results with it. Most of the presets give me a headache, although I've found 7.83 hz (Schumman resonance) with a low carrier wave (around 31-38 hz) to be pretty good.

This is odd - I thought I posted on this yesterday, but I guess not. My friend has some software that does similar stuff you have to calm down to a certain point and it "does stuff" like let balloons float or start a fire - of course I suck at it and get frustrated which makes me even suckier...

But he uses obviously more sophisitcated versions as his job to help kids with ADHD. :)

Like... it attaches and reads your brain waves or electrosomething or other and you play games like one of them you calm down to move to the left and get excited to move to the right or whatever...

The clips on the website sound like some New Age or Ambient tracks I've heard. Somehow I was expecting it to sound more like Aphex Twin.

Can you take this same idea, crank up the tempo, change the words to be about disembowlment instead of relaxation, and end up with some sort of death metal?

Or would it end up sounding like Death Ambient? Or like some New Age version of Cannibal Corpse?

Sounds cool. but does it actually work?

Placebo effects are very common. Thats why scientists use those in experiments.

Yes, some of these have passed standard tests including placebo effect controls. Probably not the ones out on mass market, but who knows?

I don't know. A lot of it is probably placebo-related. I'm not too concerned because I kind of enjoy the different weird tones and such. I'm interested in the relationship between sound and mood.

Yeah - what you're doing is likely placebo to a much larger extent than some of this stuff that's actually professional.
