So when you originally wrote that it was foolish to repeat things that other people said, there was an unspoken caveat, something along the lines of "unless they have demonstrated first-hand to you their reliability"?

Yeah, pretty much. (Unwittingly), I initially wasn't entirely clear in my own mind, and so your questions helped me become aware of the subtleties. Thanks.

-Rennie-
This guy's a riot.

-tomas-
Speaking of riots, I was a casual observer of one, more like a civil disturbance think about 1978. Was even broadsided with a soda-pop bottle on the left shoulder. Fortunately for me, the bottle's velocity was slowing to about 20 mph and non-molotov variety...

-Rennie
If I didn't force myself to stop laughing my heart would have surely stopped by now.

-tomas-
Yeah, was offered laughing gas once, never saw the blue-light rush (giddiness) people said I'd "get". Just a downer feeling after about a minute or so. Cracked a smile was about all...

-Rennie-
He did his best to turn what I wrote into a joke so that he wouldn't have to directly address it.

-tomas-
Oh no, it's just there was nothing of substance to address, that's why I tend to gravitate to Worldly Affairs and let all you wanna-be geniuses duke it out here with the Forum Brainiacs... You know who you are.

-Rennie-
I must admit, of all the people who post in this forum tomas is the only person who writes like he's on some sort of mind-numbing psyche drug.

-tomas-
Sorry to disappoint, no "legal" drug here but a morphine drip in VietNam. When I came to and fully had my wits about me, I pulled it out. Sister Morphine is one, -smooth- ride ;-)

As far as the "illegal" variety goes:

Cocaine (Bolivian Flake circa 1981) - Tried it once, nosebleed central!

Heroin - If I didn't have a life and no responsibility to anyone, this'd be my drug of choice ;-)

Prescription pills: Never, none. Too dangerous.

Hashish - Wow ;-)

LSD - Always had good trips though haven't dropped any since 1991, during Gulf War One. Was in Saudi Arabia at the time. (Stateside - Might've had a hit of purple microdot in 1996, but had a couple beers too many to have had a good effect, prolly pissed it all out.)

Marijuana - First time was at a 1960s summer Bible Camp in Minnesota. The dealers were a couple of preacher's kids... three-four of us ended up (rowboat) in the middle of the lake laughing and laughing...

The best I ever had was in Hawaii, Kona Gold, or some such variety. Never had any bad stuff. Skunk is overblown, I think. Out where I live the neighbor's just grow it hydroponically, small operations for the 'hood heads'. No money changes hands etc. Haven't lit up in over a year now. Marijuana tea is about all I consume now. Duffersville, USA.

-Rennie-
He tends to write like some sort of mentally ill person.

-tomas-
Not been suggested to me by any professional, no hospitals, nobody. I speak (in person) better than I write. Growing up, was in constant fear of brother, mom, dad and neglected homework, just didn't get any kind of homework support from a "normal" family member. Lack of sleep, due to fear of next beating. It's probably that I was beaten by my parents (and older brother) from age 5 to age 13 when I was finally able to physically defend myself. I was a small kid til the growth spurt took hold at age 12 to 13. Grew from 4'6" to 6' in a little over a year. The last time my dad slapped me, he loosed a couple of my molars, I then punched him between the eyes and flattened him out. After that, my mom never threatened me again. Brother took notice, too.

After that, a normal (whatever that truly means) family life began to emerge :-)

Rennie-
This post is a classic example of his mentally ill writing style.

-tomas-
Well, I'm still here (in Dan's - Kevin's - David's good graces) .. where are you?

PS - Never cared for magic mushrooms, they gave me the shits...

Peyote - Excellent when attending a powwow, sweat lodge (other spiritual gatherings).

Tobacco - Smoked for 20 years, the worst thing I've ever done to my body and soul.

That said, native-american tobacco is most spiritual when taken in moderation ;-)

Suppose may have tried some Khat once or twice some 20 years ago in Africa, it was always a good spiritual buzz.

Never was a booze hound .. occasional Southern Comfort/Dr. Pepper mix. Budweiser sixpack couple times a year. Some lovely dinner wine when over to some Jewish friends home.

But anyways, no mental illness trips here, Rennie, sorry to disappoint.

It's funny to see how people who get mocked the most around here are the only ones with sense.
e.g. Tomas, Unidian, Laird and a few others.

Unless the QRSH are actually a parody of jaded philosophers...my point still stands.
The examples I've given, have at least lived a little instead of gaining their "wisdom" from "Holy Scriptures".

Your post smacks of fantasy. What do you know of what "living" Unidian or Laird have done? What do you know about the "living" any of QRSH have done? And what "holy scriptures" are you referring to?

When people start to speak with this kind of familiarity it also makes me wonder who the hell they really are.

Look, I only know of their writing. This is currently my only indicator of the lives all people here lead. It's not the most reliable indeed, but I'll tell you one thing: if I had to choose between TLU or QRS, I'll choose the first every time. TLU MIGHT be based on realism and life, QRS MIGHT be founded on misogyny, misanthropy and anti-semitism because its tenants highly esteem outcasts like Weininger.

Now I would like you to answer this: are your views on women and life just an elaborately played joke?
I think this is a crucial point...

Your last reply is just the lowest type of condescension imaginable. Can you argue Weininger was not a miserable outcast for following his own writings? Why are you so attracted to his essays and works?

When have I ever said I am "so attracted" to his writings? Weininger represents about 1% of my philosophical interest. His writings have nothing to do with my own ideas, though he got some things pretty right. I don't care that he was an "outcast"? What does that even mean?

I wasn't condescending in my last reply. I was responding to what is your presumption in thinking you understand my ideas. You have said absolutely nothing so far to indicate such an understanding.

Anything I've witnessed on your site-from the radio shows to your own writings prove without fail that you share a lot more than 1% of OW views. What does "Outcast" mean? Hating women, yourself and life so much...you actually shoot yourself at 23.

Now answer this: -does this sound like the life of an accomplished philosopher?

-Do you need me to back it up with quotes?

I don't think there's any evidence that he hated women, himself or life in any general sense. We don't know why he killed himself. At 23 the reasons could be manifold.
Now answer this: -does this sound like the life of an accomplished philosopher?
His writings speak to his level of accomplishment as a philosopher. Weininger was partially accomplished but by no means fully. He certainly wasn't enlightened and no-one I know of suggests otherwise.
-Do you need me to back it up with quotes?
Yes, quotes would give us something to actually talk about.

-Here is one quote to begin with: "The Jew's sin is smirking at the Good, as the simpleton's sin is smirking at wisdom."

Don't you think it's fishy categorising all Jews as people "smirking at Good".
What do you think of branding all people "smirking at wisdom" as sinful, especially when wisdom is so hard to define?

-It's not the writings that speak, the life actually lead is much more important.

-Weininger didn't hate life, himself or women? Than why does he aim such vitriol at these exact subjects?

No, what I think is fishy is plucking a quote like that out of the context of Weininger's description of the psychological type he called "Jew". You don't have to be a Jew to be "jewish" in that sense and he certainly would not have claimed that all Jews evinced this psychological type. Without the background for that quote, it's meaningless.
What do you think of branding all people "smirking at wisdom" as sinful, especially when wisdom is so hard to define?
He didn't brand all people, he specifically said "the simpleton". And I don't have any trouble defining wisdom. Why do you?
-It's not the writings that speak, the life actually lead is much more important.
And what of his life, other than a single moment that was his suicide, says anything about his so-called hatred for just about everything?
-Weininger didn't hate life, himself or women? Than why does he aim such vitriol at these exact subjects?
He aims "vitriol" as what he perceives as delusion and falsity, just as you aim vitriol at him and what you perceive as falsity.

Ok then. Calling a bad psychological type Jewish doesn't sound fishy to you?

Wisdom IS hard to define; saying it isn't, might prove you're a megalomaniac.

And what of his life, other than a single moment that was his suicide, says anything about his so-called hatred for just about everything?

1otherS
I think he killed himself because of his massively bitter outlook on life, you say it was just a bad fluke. We're in a stalemate.
-Weininger didn't hate life, himself or women? Than why does he aim such vitriol at these exact subjects?
He aims "vitriol" as what he perceives as delusion and falsity, just as you aim vitriol at him and what you perceive as falsity.
1otherS
He doesn't aim vitriol at his own delusion and falsity. He just blames "types" like women and Jews for all the bad shit happening to him. I'm not even angry at Weininger, I just think he wasted his linguïstic and logical talent.

My post was humorous but had a point, mocking you to put you in the group with sense, which is where you obviously see yourself, right?

However, your next post showed less than sense. It is not reasonable to conclude that Quinn, Rowdan, Solway, (and Hindemarsh) have not 'lived a little' nor that they have gained their wisdom from books. Obviously from their postings this is not true. Rather their wisdom is based on their reasoning, using logic to ascertain the nature of truth. Now, one can argue the merits of their findings or the accuracy of their means. But one cannot cogently argue that it is all simply rote Scripture.

I remember Laird being asked to leave. Sschaula got shamed for disagreeing. You see, I have some Genius-history under my belt as well and I have to tell you: disagreeance doesn't get handled maturely by the QRS-they usually resort to glib word games and ignoring valid points by others.
Here's a much used tactic by DQ:

Is that the behaviour you would expect from individuals looking for perfection and rationality?

Yes, that happened here. David Quinn's own words:
It's there in everything you write, both directly and indirectly. Even when you are discussing pure philosophy, it's done in a way that safe-guards or enhances your attractiveness to women. Everything that comes out of your mouth is distorted by that perspective.

I also hold you largely responsible for the deterioration of the forum's standards over the past few months, more or less turning it into a ladies' salon where gossip and mundane observations dominated. So at the moment, I'm not all that well-disposed to you.

It is clear that you don't have any real interest or empathy for the values of this forum, so I really think you should go elsewhere. I'm sure there are plenty of sites where you can thrash out your obsession with women and relationships to your heart's content. I don't see why we should continue to accept you inflicting it upon us here.
And:
Of course. But it's become a waste of time in this case. There is just too much of a divide between your mentality and ours to cause any real dialectical sparks to occur. There is a limit to how much interest adolescence can provide.

You've had your time here and now it is time for change. The forum needs some renewal and this is a part of it.

I'll give you a few days to wrap up your affairs here, but then I expect you to do the honourable thing and move on.
Do you really see this as a simple case of censure of dissent?
Sschaula got shamed for disagreeing.
Have you got a link to that? Scott's a pretty tough boy. And I've never seen any of QRS purposefully shame anyone, that I could tell.
You see, I have some Genius-history under my belt as well and I have to tell you: disagreeance doesn't get handled maturely by the QRS-they usually resort to glib word games and ignoring valid points by others.
This is incorrect, as these are not their usual resort. Although David occaisonally folds a bit of Zennish humor into his writing, Dan is the only one of the three who wields the rapier wit you may be calling "glib word games." Is all employment of wit a game? And who is being ignored? Are all questions and all questioners bound to receive exactly the same response? What obligation do QRS have?

I think you are seeing myopically and projecting such things as shame, immaturity, and gaming where they do not exist.
Here's a much used tactic by DQ:

"I can safely ignore everything you say from now on."
What was this in response to? Who was the poster? Context.
Here's one from DR:

Was it? What was the question? Context is everything.
Is that the behaviour you would expect from individuals looking for perfection and rationality?
Yes or no, depending on context. Are all minds reached in the same exact way? Who is capable of understanding, and by what means? Should all who wander in here be here?
What do you think of this?:

I've already said that from my point of view their writing clearly shows they are doing their own thinking.

I don't have too much time on my hands so I'll answer your most important challenge for now.
-I admit they interpret Weininger and his kindred spirits very competently, so my calling them '101'-ers was glib on my behalf.

-What I do like about their approach is their criticism 'women' which they do justifiedly. One thing I have a gripe with though:they do not explicate these 'women' are representatives of a psychological type.

This leads me to believe they sometimes play the shock and shame-game to wake-up people.

I'm really not sure what your point is. If, as you say, you have a fair bit of history here (and if you remember Scott, you must have), it somewhat beggars belief that you could say:
One thing I have a gripe with though:they do not explicate these 'women' are representatives of a psychological type.
Honestly, if I have to state one more time that all the observations about "women", individuals or groups, are observations about the feminine in action (as are, in reality, most of the observations we make about men), my head will explode. I'm not even interested in women other than by way of the fact of them being the most perfect template for observation and discussion of the nature of the feminine that we have. It ought also be obvious that the nature of the feminine dimension of mind is significant to us [all thinking people] because of the enormous role it plays in human thinking and activity and because of the significance it has with respect to the path of enlightenment.

Other than occasional, throw away remarks that are not intended to be part of the philosophical discourse, this is the way that all observations about women should be taken.

Just trying to find ways to save you time that could be spent in more fun / fulfilling activities.
