I'll keep this simple...
What's the purpose of a pet as part of the universe?
I mean that most things have a truly dynamic purpose to nature. Mankind is dynamically creating purpose from nothing. Isn't that selfish?

Growing up on a farm in North Dakota, there was nothing better to fetch the milk cows than our border collie. My dad said "All you need do is reach for the milk pail and Patsy will do the hard labor for you." And that includes the bonus of the dog opening and closing the fence gate!
Obviously they make for good companions when there is no one else to talk to (with), they don't complain back, the panting can be somewhat annoying, especially when they drool. But all in all, i never considered our farm/ranch dogs as pets per se.
Remember this, most breeds of dogs and cats are imports (introduced species) from Europe, Africa, Asia.
I haven't a real problem with dogs other than the more "vicious breeds" out there that "seem" to attack children, the elderly, the defenseless, one read/hear about in the mainstream news.
If it were up to me i'd have destroyed, all the housecats and non-native dogs from the Americas. :-) (really!)
No importation of boa constrictors, mynah birds, etc.
Ditto for the Native Indian, when time to pull the sleds with their burdensome cargoes, the (native) dogs would toil to no end... not only that but when time to feast, the dogs ate what everybody else (the humans) ate! And sleep with them too. Keeps you warm in the winter. (checked the Weather Channel a bit earlier and the forecast for most of North Dakota was for temps to be in the 10s to 10 below Farenheit for the next week!)
The girlfriend and i have never had pets of any kind in our homes. If we want to see (or the smell of) animals we go to the zoos or other peoples homes...
One of the nastiest things to witness is a dog or cat rubbing its ass-cheeks on the living room carpet...

All of which has already happened, and we are a result. The total of this proposition is that we are living on a world that was designed to filter out bad humans.

Hsandman you got free of the pet question very well, and found a punchline, which is good thinking. I'm not really into the experiment theory. Just a bit more purposeful than that. Purpose is more than just a human creation, purpose needs to be defined very clearly in the Universe, because a dessert is dead when it has no energy for purpose.hsandman wrote:Hmm...Pincho wrote:My world view...

I woke up with this pet question still looming. There was more to it than a companion, and pet of course is a human description.
But the question then metamorphs......
What is the purpose of a Photon?
Pet = Photon???
Does a photon have any purpose without life?
Does the Universe have any purpose without Earth?

Sorry, Pincho, I don't know the answer to that. :-/

By the way, you would get more understanding of where the general emphasis of the board comes from if you went into the Genius Forums. There is more to this site than Wordly Matters forum. My posts are often related to other posts in there. Like when you linked to 'Life As An Experiment', you would have known that I posted more often about 'Life As A Way To Forget Heaven'hsandman wrote:Sorry, Pincho, I don't know the answer to that. :-/

I noticed that the posts that are usually censored judged to be unfit etc, gravitate/move down to this board from others, and not the other way around, hence I believe this board is more liberal and tolerant. I believe in personal and peer censorship systems like youtube has, though I have to admit the guys who moderate this board are somewhat reasonable bunch.Pincho Paxton wrote:By the way, you would get more understanding of where the general emphasis of the board comes from if you went into the Genius Forums. Last time I left the genius forum was after a mentally unstable guy posted
some very strange stuff and his posts were removed and he himself banned. He was not being rude/crude/offensive etc. I was just getting interested in figuring out what he was talking about when someone decided that his mad pontifications are too much for my eyes and sanity to take (thanks for caring by the way.) I came back when I saw people here are becoming aware of the state of the affairs in world, i.e. zeitgeist, 911 etc. in greater numbers than on other boards and the moderators have had enough of playing god.
Funny enough the guy who was banned, was telling how he saw a ufo on military air base when he was stationed there, and how he was diagnosed in a military mental clinic as a schizoid. Not sure what his next posts were (maybe he was getting crude/rude/offensive, but I usually like to make that call for myself.)

I get the feeling that you are talking about moving completely off this site. I meant that you should visit other forums on this same site, because I have noticed that you always post only in Worldly Matters...hsandman wrote:I noticed that the posts that are usually censored judged to be unfit etc, gravitate/move down to this board from others, and not the other way around, hence I believe this board is more liberal and tolerant.
