The Truth About Mental Illness
The Truth About Mental Illness
I'd like to read other people's perspective about mental illness. There is much debate on the matter and the correlation between mental illness and intellectual brilliance.

Re: The Truth About Mental Illness
Is there a correlation between mental illness and intellectual brilliance? A 2004 study pointed in the other direction with regard to schizophrenia. This appears in There’s No Art In Manic Depression:Plexus wrote:I'd like to read other peoples perspective about this thread's title. …real mental illness is boring. Depressives are toxic and dull. Manic depressives are irritating. People with schizophrenia or autism are largely indecipherable. Most of them are best treated not by charismatic psychoanalysts who carefully excavate the early, repressed trauma that has “led†to their illness, but by doctors who administer psychotropic drugs of one kind of another.

Not true round here though, where thanks to 'Quinnanetics the Modern Science of Mental Health ©' scads of the mentally ill have attained enlightenment or will very shortly.

I want a refund. I attained nothing but "toilet brush" and got stuck being crazy anyway. Is there a complaint desk?
I live in a tub.

People don't understand the truth and they never will.
I guess I'm just too advanced for this world.
...And they thought they could take care of me by pumping me full of meds. I've got the last laugh. In fact, I'm still laughing.
To Dan, please delete my User/pass. ps. I took your advice and the meds only made me worse. I know you're in on it. I know, I know, but what I know, I cannot say.
Goodbyee:)

Re: The Truth About Mental Illness
There's no such thing as 'mental health' and perhaps it's even a contradiction. Thought could be easily seen one of Nature's infections. But not necessarily a bad one, - it's still adapting like a virus.
The key to mental health seems not to determine what kind of illness one has but to be open to adaptation. Can one admit a fault? Can one admit having believed in or fought for the wrong things over a whole lifetime? That some things labeled 'good' were actually evil, or the other way around? Is there room for change?
If there's any thing like health it's like a path and one has to distrust and test the content of mind all the time, to a certain degree because one has to make working assumptions to make it through the day and deal with what's thrown at you - to thrive.

Psychiatry is still so far in the Dark Ages that prescribing medication is on par with guesswork. Sometimes it takes a long time for them to guess the correct medication and dose. Also, it can take months before a medication starts working its best, so that takes time, too.
Good luck. See you in your next incarnation.

Re: The Truth About Mental Illness
"If you are not mentally ill, you are not paying attention."
[Like the bumper sticker that you used to see around university towns, 'If you are not outraged you are not paying attention'.]
It seems to me that the symptoms of mental illness and madness of different sorts is an integral part of 'our society'. When I lived in Europe (in France) it seemed to me so much more conducive to mental well-being than to what I knew in sped-up and bordering on psychosis California of the 1970s-80s. Some part of 'mental illness' is experiencing dissonant signals, the difference between what people do and say, present themselves as/are. There are dissonances that can drive you mad, if you can't master them. The more that 'society' engages in essential lies, the more it has to cover over those lies---to lie about lying---and the more general conditions move toward unbalance, and the more the symptoms arise, the more visible they become.
Shamanically, it is a literal fact that the potencies that bring us well-being or restore well-being, are natural potencies, nature spirits, the 'spirit' of forests & rivers & living, natural things. It seems to me that the farther one moves away from nature, the closer one moves toward a sort of unseating of oneself.
Personally, I always felt that what kept me sane in a critical period was spending lots and lots of time in nature.

One of my older bothers, Bud, checked himself into the Jamestown State Hospital, Jamestown, North Dakota, back in to mid-1980s. What his reasons were, I don't understand. I received some paperwork to fill out. It was about 20 pages of "what is in your family history?"-type of questions. I put it in our vault and it is still there. Being six years younger, I had no interest into delving into my own human nightmare of existence.

Yes, Bud, is what I refer to as "a criminal genius." Excellent business ideas, others would seize upon them and take them home as their own golden egg. Where he comes up with these ideas, I (nobody has been able to) figure out. His first wife, Melanie, said her dad, Fletcher, said "the most brilliant mind he had ever encountered." Fletch's last words were, "I sure wish Bud would stop by and visit." Bud, commited adultery, and so then, Melanie sued for divorce.

This is fairly-well written! Interesting about male/female poets and the tie-in with people and UFO reports.
Dennis Kucinich clais to have seen a UFO and his wife writes poetry.
ps- I would've given this thread an earlier look-see but the forum moderators tolerate the trolls who use "humor" on the Genius Forum - as opposed to Worldly Forum where "LOL" ruled.
EDIT: I should add that the discipline is much better now that Dan has taken more balanced view and not as much riff-raff will be tolerated and hopefully no more posters posting drunk...
This forum can use some structure, discipline :-)

Well, Plex, I don't have any pros/cons to pass on about this article. Never having been on prescriptions, of any sort, it's best not to comment.
In my volunteer work, at domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, food banks etc. it seems to be a given that something is asunder. Whether these folks pop pills to dull the pain of ordinary life, is unknown.
Thanks for sharing the web site.

Good observation. Individually, "try" to find on your own, get as close as is possible in this human shell (wherein resides the forgiveness) to ponder reality.

"This world" is designed for you and no one else can (or willingly could) take that away from you. Whatever "floats your boat" makes your thoughts (actionable onto) placing feelings to the level you seek.
