Articles and Critiques

Post by Kelly Jones »

Like the Videos and Critique thread, this thread encourages the marvellous ability to stay off auto-pilot. I'm sure most of you read a lot of articles and opinions, either online or otherwise.

Here you can post a link to those items, plus your short analysis. Feel free to add a rating out of 5 stars. Cut to the chase: if the basic principle or research or presentation is false, tell us.

Quality analyses will go into a 'Thinking Man's Newspaper', to try to convert more people into thinkers.

Article 1: How would Jesus vote / New Scientist, 26/9/08. By Jim Giles.

Missing subtitle to article: The best leader for America must be a psychologist

Christians believe in psychological truths, namely, in the BFG (Big Friendly Giant). Christians suppress anxiety using this psychological friend. So the only way for rational folk to heal the widespread illness of Christianity is to provide down-to-earth, realistic BFGs. Meaning: simple examples of how to live. Scientists are going about it the wrong way by belittling these childish folk: you cannot give a worrier more details. Rational folk need to be psychologists, who keep things simple.

The article needed a strong individual in politics to respond in this way:

Journalist: What is a person? and at what point does something become a person, so it can be granted rights?

A man: Something becomes a person when Nature has given sufficient resources for its sustenance. Nature impairs reproduction in times of famine. Existing infants starve to death in the wild if the mother cannot get enough sustenance. Life, then, depends on causes for life, not merely on human laws. We should be looking at the health of the environment, for life largely depends on that. So, there are no human rights when humans cannot survive.

It is no use quibbling over scientific theories. Christians have a psychological illness. That is where the remedies should be focussed.

Rating: * * (extra star for stating that it is difficult to say where life begins and ends).
