Off topic - to answer your question from another thread. The 'big three' are the most basic weight training exercises that are used as primary indicators of physical strength, and are also the events in powerlifting.

These are the bench press, squat and deadlift.

Also, weight training triggers an increase in the production of testosterone, so Matt might look into it as it should be beneficial in his situation, at least as the testosterone's role is concerned.

You confuse the swing with the energy to swing. Attachments only get stronger as we age if we don't wise up at an early stage. It takes up more and more of our energy to keep the cycle running until we run out of fuel and die.

Repulsion and attraction are what motivates now and can be used to launch oneself, like a spacecraft sometimes uses planetary gravity to swing around it to gain more speed. Or one can keep locked in orbit until burned up by the atmosphere.
This is what Quinn seems to be implying, he is basically saying that if someone is ultimately wise, then there is no repulsion at all.
In deep space there's indeed no gravity to be caught in. But certainly there's still direction, a course and a speed.

There will always be at least some emotional repulsion and attraction, but the point is over time the emotional swings away from the middle ground should become less pronounced and of shorter duration. They shouldn't stick.

You have got to see the ridiculousness of this statement.

I did acknowledge the terror, yet like when you first experienced The Void, you are acting like you think you are the first person who ever touched on this step (although you know there have been others). I will leave it at that, because I trust that you will continue to progress. It was only important to point out those two points, and explain why I will drop this with you now.

all this enlightenment foolishnesssssss has got to the better of you people. "Connection with the Infinite" such rubbishness!! You've already found the Infinite, NOW what????!!! Nothing, nothing comes of it. Just have fun and fuck alot of dames, there's nothing wrong with it and nothing bad is going to happen. Enlightenment is for 70 year olds, not youth and middle aged people!! Join the Anti-Psychiatry campaign and find pleasure, the Infinite has been sucked dry and there's nothing it can give you, what else can it give you? Enlightenment? That's not an answer, QRS sit on their ass on welfare cheques, this already shows the underlying issue.

It is better to become enlightened while young so you can lead your life better, than to acquire it in old age when life is nearly over. Becoming enlightened in old age defeats the purpose of being enlightened.

Having sex with a lot of dames can turn out very wrong for you indeed. At least that was my experience.

I'm doubtful that any intellectual person who preaches 'have fun and a lot of sex', has actually had much fun or sex.

I'm well acquainted with hedonism and my impression has been that 1) It leads to great misery, 2) It stunts your conscience and intellect, and 3) you're very lucky if you can pull yourself together afterwards.

If you don't feel you have what it takes to be a buddha, then just live a very conventional life. Get a wife who shares your pleasure in gardening, movies, music and books. If you can't get pleasure out of simple activities and need to go seeking lots of sex and thrills, then you're doomed.
Join the Anti-Psychiatry campaign
Again, you don't strike me as being very well acquainted with the perils of hedonism. A great deal of brain-imaging has been done on people who've abused drugs or even on those who simply have schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, and the damage and abnormalities are very apparent. People with damaged, abnormal brains benefit from psychiatry. I know individuals personally who can't live without their prescriptions, they have been helped immensely. The field needs further improvement, not elimination. I also think the research done in the name of psychiatry will serve our efforts to engineer ourselves into an improved species.

To a certain degree (the nth? perhaps) you are quite right on. It's like the graven images of Jesus - note the background light of the depictions - always the glowing whom is none other than Lucifer (the light-bearer) this should tell you who is/are the enlightened one (the the masters of the universal light) the all-seeing eye etc.

-farrah fawcett-
Just have fun and fuck alot of dames, there's nothing wrong with it and nothing bad is going to happen.

-tomas-
Sure, they're all going to have abortions paid for by the Canadian welfare state.

Do any remain pregnant and ask you for child support?

Or, will you be the deadbeat dad and shirk your human duty to do the right thing.

Come on and I'll show you some people with herpes... they tell me it is a death sentence worse than AIDS.

-farrah fawcett-
Enlightenment is for 70 year olds, not youth and middle aged people!!

-tomas-
Hmmm... Why you use an image of an older guy like Faust?

Is there a deliberate false-dichotomy here I'm missing?

Join the Anti-Psychiatry campaign and find pleasure, the Infinite has been sucked dry and there's nothing it can give you, what else can it give you?

The anti-psychiatrist thing i can relate to... please expound on the rest of the thoughts in the sentence.

Enlightenment? That's not an answer, QRS sit on their ass on welfare cheques, this already shows the underlying issue.

Sure, welfare is no answer when 'able-bodied men' live off others' labors (through taxation) and have nothing to show for this existence whether in mind, body, or soul-searching.

What keeps me going is the abilities given me and thru shared experiences with the dregs of society whether it be skid row participants (sharing a couple bottles of Mad Dog 20-20 or blowing a joint with some senator in the cloakroom in Sacramento) Down and Out in Beverly Hills comes to mind.

You gotta have that inner love that is always found "within".

i'm aware of that, my previous rant was driven by a slight (perhaps wrong?) thought that enlightenment was overrated.
Boyan wrote:Having sex with a lot of dames can turn out very wrong for you indeed. At least that was my experience.
what happened?
Cory wrote:I'm doubtful that any intellectual person who preaches 'have fun and a lot of sex', has actually had much fun or sex.

how do you figure? I've had fun, but I'm still a virgin.

I'm glad you brought up hedonism Cory, for it is a key element in one's life. Why do you conclude that hedonism leads to great misery? Would it be the same amount of misery that you feel without hedonism? It would only stunt your conscience and intellect if you do it too much. Why would I be lucky if I can pull myself together afterwards? Tell me the perils of hedonism!!!!

Cory, I have what it takes to be a buddha, the problem is that I need to find a secure source of income first, this problem is giving me panic attacks because I don't want to continue destroying my mind in university to appease my parents. I most certainly cannot stand having a wife, I can imagine it would be horror.

Cory, it's obvious that you don't even KNOW WHAT THE FUCK schizophrenia is, psychiatrists can't even agree on a distinct definition that doesn't include something that everyone has done at some time. Bi-Polar Disorder is simply how emotional you are, the more inspired and passionate you are, the more depressed and unfulfilled you will be, it's not a fucking illness, it's just life. No brain scans have found anything at all to show for these "illnesses" simply because they aren't biological diseases. People with damaged brains DO NOT BENEFIT ANYTHING from psychiatry, it's obvious that you are ignorant in this subject. People can't live without those pesky prescriptions because they're drugs like alcohol and meth, they only hide the problem and destroy the brain even more, that's how it works!! There's been thousands of people who have commited suicide, overdosed, paralyzed, addicted, and who knows what else with those pesky pills. The field of psychiatry needs to be DESTROYED, so idiots like you don't forcefully incarcerate harmless victims of sadistic and power-mongering lab coats. There`s NO FUCKING RESEARCH in psychiatry, there's no proof of chemical imbalances and there's no way to measure for it, do your own research before you talk shit, you shit-for-brains.

Tomas

Lucifer eh??? Now I'm totally convinced that freemasonry is bent on the conquering of the world, the enslavement of the human race, and the gathering of the world's wealth. The "all seeing eye" and so on and so on.

abortions aren't paid by welfare, but by the couple. but i know there's the child support thing. It's really retarded to have to pay child support if only one of the partners wants the baby. It should be where both partners agree on a decision before fucking, then write it in a contract.

my avatar image isn't Faust, it's Richard Wagner the great composer.

what inner love that is found "within" are you talking about?

Faust wrote:I'm glad you brought up hedonism Cory, for it is a key element in one's life.
If by hedonism you mean, amusement, enjoyment, fun, well then ok, you're right that that is a key element in a persons life in general.

I consider very high levels of hedonism to be synonymous with debauchery.
Why do you conclude that hedonism leads to great misery?
Well, I'm guessing your parents, or at least your father, had a pleasurable time on the night you were conceived, and perhaps your parents have had some pleasurable fantasies and hopes about being parents, and the actual experience of having you as a baby and watching you grow into a man might of been marked by some joys - but you must admit that their pleasure has also caused just as much pain for them. Parenting is stressful, if not disappointing - especially when the son is interesting in being a Buddha. Their pain is the price they must pay for wanting pleasure.

And what about the suffering in your life? Do you honestly think your happiness outweighs your misery?

The whole of humanity is fixated on making life more happy than it is sad. And the result is that humans as a whole are apparently considerably more sad than they are happy.
Would it be the same amount of misery that you feel without hedonism?
Consider how small the joys of children are, and then consider how small their sorrows are. As we grow older, we experience greater pleasure and thus greater pain. A wise person realizes this and brings an end to seeking pleasure.

Consider the parent who wrote this book He is a classic example of a pleasure seeker, incorrigible in his selfish desire for greater heights. And just look at the misery he makes for himself.
It would only stunt your conscience and intellect if you do it too much.

The degree to which you devote yourself to pleasure, is the degree you stunt your conscience and intellect. 'The Seducer' is a great example of someone who has specialized his intellect in order to experience pleasure more gracefully, experiencing less rejection, attachment, and disspointment. He is not as ignorant and arrogant in regards to the truth, so he doesn't suffer as much as a wanton hippy who thinks that everyone ought to be equal and have a good time on various drugs.

Because the seducer devotes himself to a narrow spectrum of the truth, understanding how to manipulate the minds of women, he can experience great pleasure without experiencing as much resulting pain. Perhaps he has minimized pain a great deal.

But nonetheless, because of his devotion to the pleasures of women, his conscience as well as his awareness of the whole truth is compromised and made gaunt. Not to mention, as he grows old and confronts death, he may not handle what remains of is inner life very well, and may be thwarted by a devastating degree of sorrow and despair.

Reminds me of a passage from TSZ (Book 1 - Of Voluntary Death)

In your death, our spirit and virtue should still glow like a sunset glow around the earth: otherwise yours is a bad death

And then from the next chapter (Of the Bestowing Virtue)

There is another selfishness, an all-too-poor, a hungry selfishness that always wants to steal, that selfishness of the sick, the sick selfishness.
It looks with the eye of a thief upon all lustrous things; with the greed of hunger it measures him who has plenty to eat; and it is always skulking about the table of the givers.
Sickness speaks from such craving, and hidden degeneration; the thieving greed of this longing speaks of a sick body.

Tell me, my brothers: what do we account bad and worst of all? Is it not degeneration? And we always suspect degeneration where the bestowing soul is lacking.
Our way is upward, from the species across to the superspecies.

But the degenerate mind which says 'All for me' is a horror to us.

Why would I be lucky if I can pull myself together afterwards? Tell me the perils of hedonism!!!!
If you're that curious you're going to have to experience it for yourself. Or, you might just settle for looking with your own eyes at the world. That in itself is evident enough.
Cory, I have what it takes to be a buddha, the problem is that I need to find a secure source of income first, this problem is giving me panic attacks because I don't want to continue destroying my mind in university to appease my parents.
To appease your parents eh? I suppose your appeasing them must make them very happy? And it looks like all of that happiness is creating a lot of misery for you.
Cory, it's obvious that you don't even KNOW WHAT THE FUCK schizophrenia is
It's impossible to completely know what any thing is in it's entirety.

What I do know is that there are highly unique forms of behavior that are, aside from uncommon, debilitating, painful and frightening for the person exhibiting them, and reoccurring in other individuals.

The most extreme forms of what we call 'mental disorder' are undeniable in their distinctiveness, and thus are rightly labeled, given that they reoccur.

For instance, catatonic types of schizophrenia, where striking motor disturbances, ranging from muscular rigidity to random or repetitive movements are obviously worthy of a label, and since the individual is rendered debilitated, it's understandable that we should have professionals trying to get a handle on what is rightly regarded as a mental disorder. Catatonics sometimes alternate between stuporous states in which they seem oblivious to external stimuli and agitated excitement where they are dangerous to others. While in a stuporous state, they may become locked into grotesque bodily positions that they will then maintain for hours.
psychiatrists can't even agree on a distinct definition that doesn't include something that everyone has done at some time.
Just because everyone has experienced mild delusions of grandeur and suffered a bit, doesn't mean that we shouldn't label and try understanding the physiological basis of those individuals who have extreme delusions of grandeur and suffer so extremely that they are debilitated, suicidal and unable to take care of themselves.

I agree that present day and especially past psychiatry is naive and often just plain stupid, and I agree that ignorant parenting causes problems that aren't necessary, but if you consider the improvement we've seen in psychology/psychiatry over the past 100 years, there is no reason we shouldn't expect professionals to become wiser and more competent. We shouldn't turn our backs on the MRI that's been developed. There are plenty of worthwhile things to learn about the brain, and differences in structure between those who have severe mental disorder and those who don't, I think will become more apparent as we progress.
Bi-Polar Disorder is simply how emotional you are, the more inspired and passionate you are, the more depressed and unfulfilled you will be, it's not a fucking illness, it's just life.
Being inspired and passionate is one thing, but coming to very unintelligent conclusions and convictions while under the sway of these emotions is another issue. Bad parenting is a culprit, no doubt, and perhaps 'illness' is not the best word, 'disorder' seems apt. However, I think the fact that needs facing is that some individuals are more disposed to crack under pressure and proceed to believe and do crazy things. We need to identify the physiology and genetics of these relatively more vulnerable individuals and discourage them from having kids without some kind of gene therapy or something.
No brain scans have found anything at all to show for these "illnesses" simply because they aren't biological diseases. People with damaged brains DO NOT BENEFIT ANYTHING from psychiatry, it's obvious that you are ignorant in this subject. Brain imaging with MRI's and such is relatively new and it makes no sense to stop exploring and further refining this technology, looking for differences between orderly and relatively disordered/debilitated people.

Well, if you're not happy right now, then I don't understand why it is you think experiencing more fun is going to improve your situation. That's not to say I don't think you shouldn't take a break once and a while and let loose. Who knows, in your case, getting laid a few times and indulging a bit might involve facing some fears and thus might make you stronger. But as a young man, it's best to put most of your energy into becoming truthful and intelligent, because if you don't do it while your young, you never will.

Yes, if someone whose brain is not already damaged takes medicine designed to make brain damage better, it will damage the brain - just like people who do not have diabetes should not take insulin or it will make them sick.

you hit the jackpot here.
And the result is that humans as a whole are apparently considerably more sad than they are happy.
however there are some that are more happy by doing work that they enjoy, or have inherited enough wealth to enjoy their non-working lives.
But nonetheless, because of his devotion to the pleasures of women, his conscience as well as his awareness of the whole truth is compromised and made gaunt. Not to mention, as he grows old and confronts death, he may not handle what remains of is inner life very well, and may be thwarted by a devastating degree of sorrow and despair.
what if his lack of conscience doesn't thwart him to sorrow and despair?? After all there's no god right?
To appease your parents eh? I suppose your appeasing them must make them very happy? And it looks like all of that happiness is creating a lot of misery for you.
I'm appeasing them in order to not get kicked out of the house, although I've realized that they childishly almost perversely ill, like to cling to the fantasy that all this toil wasn't in vain as long as I "get an education, for good job bla bla bla" oh the horror. Do you live with your parents, or what kind of work do you do?
It's impossible to completely know what any thing is in it's entirety.
I disagree. Ultimate Truths are pretty certain.
The most extreme forms of what we call 'mental disorder' are undeniable in their distinctiveness, and thus are rightly labeled, given that they reoccur.
again you're very ignorant about psychiatry. There's thousands of 'disorders' that aren't distinct at all, only facts of life, or just things that power-mongering lab coats don't like about others, things deemed 'abnormal' which is entirely arbitrary as normality is socially determined. Just because things such as depression, paranoia, and loneliness reoccur, doesn't make them disorders. All these problems have existential explanations.
WTF. So now physical problems and motor problems are mental disorders???? This definition of schizophrenia doesn't even remotely resemble the 100 other idiotic definitions grouped together. Wtf is muscular rigidity??? People can have ticks to explain those repetitive movements. People are also jittery when they're nervous or paranoid. The fact that you even mention PROFESSIONALS TRYING TO GET A HANDLE ON WHAT IS RIGHTLY REGARDED as personal problems, just creeps the fuck out of me, this whole field needs to be thrown the consines of hell.
Catatonics sometimes alternate between stuporous states in which they seem oblivious to external stimuli and agitated excitement where they are dangerous to others. While in a stuporous state, they may become locked into grotesque bodily positions that they will then maintain for hours.
Hmm, this again has nothing to relate with the 100 other definitions of schizophrenia. The word itself means, "split-mind" so it shows how fucking retarded this whole fiasco is. This catatonic state can be perfectly explained existentially. The individual has realized that alienation and persecution occur regularly due to the madness of Reality and the corrupt and debaucherous nature of other people. A Clockwork Orange can explain catatonics quite well.
doesn't mean that we shouldn't label and try understanding the physiological basis of those individuals who have extreme delusions of grandeur and suffer so extremely that they are debilitated, suicidal and unable to take care of themselves.
yes it does fucking mean that we shouldn't label them, you belligerant jackass!!! Taking care of someone and taking away their civil liberties are polar opposites.
There are plenty of worthwhile things to learn about the brain, and differences in structure between those who have severe mental disorder and those who don't, I think will become more apparent as we progress.
there's NO improvement in psychiatry, because the whole thing is a quack. "Professionals" are anything but, they are NOT wise, and only want to exploit, sexually abuse, and degrade people. These people are scum and need to be fired. MRI's are for brain diseases, not for quack "disorders" made entirely on arbitrary socially constructed definitions, this is not science you belligerant jackass.
Being inspired and passionate is one thing, but coming to very unintelligent conclusions and convictions while under the sway of these emotions is another issue. Bad parenting is a culprit, no doubt, and perhaps 'illness' is not the best word, 'disorder' seems apt. We need to identify the physiology and genetics of these relatively more vulnerable individuals and discourage them from having kids without some kind of gene therapy or something.
it's called delusions, ignorance, and emotional attachments, not a fucking quack physiological or genetic origin. Gene therapy? wtf?
In other cases, the medication has done more good than bad.
more belligerance. no medication is good, any 'good' is derived from a masking of the problem and a further deadening and numbing of the brain, that is all. you don't treat quack disorders which are entirely socially constructed with medications.
Brain imaging with MRI's and such is relatively new and it makes no sense to stop exploring and further refining this technology, looking for differences between orderly and relatively disordered/debilitated people.
MRI's are for brain diseases, not fucking bullshit 'disorders' arbitrarily constructed by comparing individuals with others' social behaviour. wtf is 'orderly' and 'disorderly' anyway??? Everyone who gets panic and anxiety attacks, is paranoid, depressed, too happy, not emotional, egotistical, has a disorder according to modern psychiatry. 'emotional blunting' is another disorder, give me a fucking break.

Elizabeth, there's NO distinct definition of schizophrenia!!! You don't understand this simple point. Schizophrenia is not even agreed among psychiatrists what the hell it is. It has 100 quack definitions, ranging from "delusions of grandeur" to "paranoia" "depression" "psychoses" "too happy, too sad (BI POLAR!!)" "catatonic" "irrelevant thoughts (WTF IS THAT?!!!)" "emotional blunting" "loss of contact with reality (wtf!!!)"

so you see, it's NOT REAL SCIENCE, GET IT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULL. You cannot have a vague word which has no specific definition, and which is entirely socially constructed, and use fuking MRI's to think that you will find it. You must first DEFINE WTF it is, before you can find it. Bi-Polar disorder is just heightening of passions, which makes one more depressed, it's not hard to fucking understand. Obviously since our brain determines our behaviour, these problems and facts of life will show up on our brains, but this has NOTHING to do with "disease" or "abnormality" or with bullshit medications that are DESIGNED TO DESTROY THE BRAIN.

Not to mention, as he grows old and confronts death, he may not handle what remains of is inner life very well, and may be thwarted by a devastating degree of sorrow and despair.
what if his lack of conscience doesn't thwart him to sorrow and despair?? After all there's no god right?
Ok, even if he doesn't suffer, the fact is that he ends up with a very gaunt conscience, for he has lived a petty, shallow life.
I live on my own in the winter while I go to school at Dal (studying psychology), but I live with my parents in the summer. This summer I've done a lot of landscaping work.
It's impossible to completely know what any thing is in it's entirety.
I disagree. Ultimate Truths are pretty certain.
Ultimate truth, or absolute truths, I agree are certain, but these truths can't give us certainty in regards to empirical matters (e.g., determining what exactly an observable 'thing' is)

The challenge of giving a name and description to someones distinctly disorderly behavior is an empirical matter. A large amount of cases are compared, similarities are noticed, a judgment, however uncertain, is made. In many instances, this is reasonable.
Just because things such as depression, paranoia, and loneliness reoccur, doesn't make them disorders.

I don't think they would be regarded by anyone as disorders if the person experiencing the depression or paranoia was able to maintain their ability to interact and function in a way that they themselves were ok with. People are labeled according to the symptoms they report. People are labeled because they seek help. Otherwise they often end up bums on the street, sometimes muttering to themselves while staring into space.
All these problems [depression, paranoia] have existential explanations.
Are these explanations solutions to what you apparently regard as problems?
For instance, catatonic types of schizophrenia, where striking motor disturbances, ranging from muscular rigidity to random or repetitive movements are obviously worthy of a label, and since the individual is rendered debilitated, it's understandable that we should have professionals trying to get a handle on what is rightly regarded as a mental disorder.
WTF. So now physical problems and motor problems are mental disorders????
I don't think it's very radical to suggest that it is a problem in the brain that is causing someone to stand for many hours in a very bizzare position. Especially when the person is oblivious to external stimuli one minute, stunned in a stupor and then unpredictably flies into an agitated excitement the next minute. Not to mention their auditory and visual hallucinations.
Wtf is muscular rigidity???
In a person with Catatonic Schizophrenia, it looks like this
People can have ticks to explain those repetitive movements.
Yes, well catatonic schizophrenia is much more extreme than this.
People are also jittery when they're nervous or paranoid.
Well, I don't deny what William James once said: that abnormality is simply normality under a microscope. When someone is miserable and wants help because their once normal behavior has become so amplified and exaggerated that they have lost their sense of self control, then that is a problem. Giving labels for various abnormalities and trying to devise better treatment for these people, not to mention a better understanding of how these people have become the way they are, I don't think is unreasonable.
The fact that you even mention PROFESSIONALS TRYING TO GET A HANDLE ON WHAT IS RIGHTLY REGARDED as personal problems, just creeps the fuck out of me, this whole field needs to be thrown the consines of hell.
Well, when people go looking for help from people who have studied many case histories, much physiology, the works of past psychologists, and have a had a lot of experience with other patients - then I don't think it's unreasonable for these professionals to do their best at helping these people who are actually looking for help from them.
Eugene Bleuler, when he originally coined the term, intended to suggest that certain mental functions, such as thought, language and emotion, which are joined together in normal people, are somehow split apart. Again, this really isn't that unreasonable.
This catatonic state can be perfectly explained existentially.
I'm curious, how do you account for what you apparently believe is inferiority in certain races? Or do you still hold to this belief?
The individual has realized that alienation and persecution occur regularly due to the madness of Reality and the corrupt and debaucherous nature of other people.
There are many people who share this view, but they don't end up hallucinating, getting their limbs locked into weird positions, unable to take care of themselves, etc.

You see, the problem is that some people have a lower threshold for stress, becoming incapacitated much easier. It's apt to give these people unique labels, given that the ways in which they become incapacitated vary, albeit, their unique form of disability is often not unprecedented, but rather, is recognizable due to past cases or other present cases. Some cases are trickier than others and I have no doubt that psychiatrists are very gaunt in their awareness of what the most significant factors are to consider. But I also feel that the most extreme and consistent forms of disorder need to be studied and treatments should be devised and continually improved with better understanding.
doesn't mean that we shouldn't label and try understanding the physiological basis of those individuals who have extreme delusions of grandeur and suffer so extremely that they are debilitated, suicidal and unable to take care of themselves.
yes it does fucking mean that we shouldn't label them, you belligerant jackass!!! Taking care of someone and taking away their civil liberties are polar opposites.
The majority of people actually end up feeling relieved when they receive a diagnosis for what ever problem they have. It gives them a sense of orientation and they are comforted to know that it's not their fault that they can't stop behaving in ways that has made their life difficult, if not miserable.
There are plenty of worthwhile things to learn about the brain, and differences in structure between those who have severe mental disorder and those who don't, I think will become more apparent as we progress.
there's NO improvement in psychiatry, because the whole thing is a quack.
I think you've been bamboozled by anti-psychiatry literature.
"Professionals" are anything but, they are NOT wise, and only want to exploit, sexually abuse, and degrade people.
That's too broadly sweeping of a statement.
These people are scum and need to be fired. MRI's are for brain diseases, not for quack "disorders" made entirely on arbitrary socially constructed definitions, this is not science you belligerant jackass.
There was a case with identical twins, where one brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia, whereas the other brother had no problems. An MRI was done on both of their brains. Guess what? The schizophrenic brother's brain showed atrophy and enlarged ventricles. This is science. Taking that evidence and putting forth the hypotheses that brain abnormalities combined with environmental factors play a role in schizophrenia is also science.
We need to identify the physiology and genetics of these relatively more vulnerable individuals and discourage them from having kids without some kind of gene therapy or something.
it's called delusions, ignorance, and emotional attachments, not a fucking quack physiological or genetic origin. Gene therapy? wtf?
Sure, wasn't it you who expressed conviction that some races were weaker than others? What is the origin of this weakness? Or did you change your mind on that issue?
Brain imaging with MRI's and such is relatively new and it makes no sense to stop exploring and further refining this technology, looking for differences between orderly and relatively disordered/debilitated people.
MRI's are for brain diseases, not fucking bullshit 'disorders' arbitrarily constructed by comparing individuals with others' social behaviour.
Even PET scans can detect differences in the brains of a schizophrenic patient in comparison to an individual who has no major problems.
wtf is 'orderly' and 'disorderly' anyway???
That things have an order and regularity to them allows us to have a sense of free will. If things were totally disorganized and chaotic, a sense of freedom would be impossible. Most people who admit to having a mental disorder admit that 'they just can't help it.' Their disorder robs them of their sense of free will, to varying degrees.
Everyone who gets panic and anxiety attacks, is paranoid, depressed, too happy, not emotional, egotistical, has a disorder according to modern psychiatry.
Not really. If the individual wants help and seeks help by people who claim to have studied the human mind a great deal (modern psychiatrists), then they may be regarded as having a disorder. If the individual doesn't feel they need help and can cope on their own, then there is no reason for that individual to label himself or allow others to label him as having a disorder.

however there are some that are more happy by doing work that they enjoy

C: Can you give me some examples?
bill gates, donald trump, Oprah, scientists, artists, etc...
or have inherited enough wealth to enjoy their non-working lives.

C: What do they do with themselves? Again, do you have any examples in mind?
they have fun, do creative artistic or intellectual projects with their spare time and wealth. Although this type of activity is less popular compared to the Bourgeois traditions of the past.
what if his lack of conscience doesn't thwart him to sorrow and despair?? After all there's no god right?
C: Ok, even if he doesn't suffer, the fact is that he ends up with a very gaunt conscience, for he has lived a petty, shallow life.[/quote]
depends how much time he spent womanizing. If he say spent almost all of his time doing better things, and did this on the side. The conscience thing is irrelevant ultimately since there's no god right?
I live on my own in the winter while I go to school at Dal (studying psychology)
I'm also studying psychology at McMaster. You realize there's not much work in it right? And how are you supposed to find work if all jobs require significant experience? What degree do you want? Not only that, it's just as bad as academic philosophy in its dishonesty, cowardice, moral compromise, and hatred of Individualism and in favour of Collective forces degrading the individual and stripping him of his civil liberties. Most students don't deserve to be in university, with their mindless and blind submission to authority and credulous and uncritical states of mind. They live entirely like the herd, finding worth in the level of applause or laughing or cheering at some pathetic and meaningless joke or dumbed-down insults from the mob.
Ultimate truth, or absolute truths, I agree are certain, but these truths can't give us certainty in regards to empirical matters (e.g., determining what exactly an observable 'thing' is)
sure they do. Nietzsche's "Will-to-Power" or the Will for that matter, is a clear and observable 'thing'.
The challenge of giving a name and description to someones distinctly disorderly behavior is an empirical matter. A large amount of cases are compared, similarities are noticed, a judgment, however uncertain, is made. In many instances, this is reasonable.
no it's not you belligerant jackass. You're a fucktard for talking about "distinctly disorderly behaviour" because it's purely SOCIALLY CONSTRUCTED. There's no such thing as being fucking "normal" because it's all statistically compared to the rest of the people in a given culture and social clique. And in this Collective age, the statistical norm is regarded as the 'best' when really it's the average. Just because you don't like the way someone is acting, is not a fucking disorder, it's not hard to get you belligerant jackass.
Ahahah, people ARE NOT labelled according to the symptoms they report, you have no idea how corrupt and powerful psychiatrists are, and politicians are giving them even more in the name of "medical security" to incarcerate and degrade patients without their consent. The only way people interact with depression and paranoia that "themselves are okay with" is simply by ignoring it. You don't need to FUCKING LABEL SOMEONE just because they seek help, that's what's so retarded!!!! These people just don't have the same control to cope with these life problems, that is all, there's no disorder or abnormality or disease to label. Some of these people THINK they need "professional" help because they're credulous. They think some shrink in a lab coat with some bullshit academic qualifications knows all the answers, etc etc.. I mutter to myself when staring into space, it's called contemplating the Infinite. There are plenty of bums who choose not to participate in the madness of society. See once again, behaviours that you deem "bizarre" and "abnormal" are entirely socially constructed according to what you think is proper behaviour, that's all this bullshit quack is.
Are these explanations solutions to what you apparently regard as problems?
yes, problems and facts of life that everyone experiences. Not bullshit physiological diseases or disorders. In fact, existential answers are only answers and explanations to the problems, some problems such as depression or loneliness may never be solved for some people due to the nature of the human condition, but there's nothing DISORDERLY or DISEASED about this, it's JUST LIFE.
I don't think it's very radical to suggest that it is a problem in the brain that is causing someone to stand for many hours in a very bizzare position. Especially when the person is oblivious to external stimuli one minute, stunned in a stupor and then unpredictably flies into an agitated excitement the next minute. Not to mention their auditory and visual hallucinations.
what the fuck is a "bizarre" position???? Why do you think is "abnormal" cause thousands of other people don't do it??? Cause YOU like to think it's bizarre, that is all, you belligerant jackass. Those people are obvlivious to external stimuli in order to ignore belligerant jackasses like you who can't handle deviance from the "norm." The unpredictable flying into agitated excitement can very well be the person's non-ending conflict with his finiteness of his life. Anyone who can't stand being finite and there's plenty, would have panic attacks. Hallucinations can sometimes be lied about, we're not sure if they're existing for the person. Not to mention there's thousands of "regular" people who see apparations all the fucking time. People think it's fine to talk to God, but a hallucination if God talks to them. The funny thing is that you ignored my fundamental problem with this, the fact that it's called SCHIZOPHRENIA. This specific definition of schizophrenia HAS NOTHING TO DO OR IS AT ALL RELATED TO THE OTHER 100 QUACK DEFINITIONS.
In a person with Catatonic Schizophrenia, it looks like this
and HOW THE FUCK IS THAT RELATED TO "split-mind" or "disordered thinking" or "paranoia" or "depression" or "psychoses" etc etc.. and the 100 other QUACK definitions that have NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS????
Yes, well catatonic schizophrenia is much more extreme than this.
except the other 100 quack definitions HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS.
WHAT? their "normal behaviour" has become "amplified and exaggerated" what??? wweirdddd. I never said people don't have problems, but this has nothing to do with labelling them with disorders as if it's some sort of disease that is seperate from the human condition and "fixable" with quack electroshocking and quack medications. "loss of sense of self-control" is also VERY VAGUE, and there's plenty of explanations, ranging from financial, existential, relationship, attachment problems. Fact is, there's no such thing as "behaviour abnormality" because abnormality is a purely arbitrary concept constructed socially, making it relative and unobjective.
Well, when people go looking for help from people who have studied many case histories, much physiology, the works of past psychologists, and have a had a lot of experience with other patients - then I don't think it's unreasonable for these professionals to do their best at helping these people who are actually looking for help from them.
psychiatrists have not studied the works of psychologists and great philosophers. Psychiatry is not a medical science because none of its foundations or assumptions has empirical evidence nor does it make logical sense from a philosophical and psychological stance. You don't understand that no psychiatric medication is good, because it's designed to destroy the brain. Psychiatrists EVEN ADMIT that they DON'T KNOW how these medications work, only idiots and gullibles but victims nonetheless trust these criminals. Yes psychiatrists have had much experience destroying people's lives, destroying their brains, their reputation, their social standing, their self-respect and sanity, destroying inspired boys with "ADD" and ritalin, and so on and so on. These aren't just small cases or corruptions, they're on a massive scale, and psychiatrists who have done this ARE NOT GOING TO JAIL LIKE THEY SHOULD BE. Enough is enough you belligerant jackass.
Eugene Bleuler, when he originally coined the term, intended to suggest that certain mental functions, such as thought, language and emotion, which are joined together in normal people, are somehow split apart. Again, this really isn't that unreasonable.
There's NO SUCH THING AS "normal people"!!!! It's an entirely arbitrary concept that is socially and subjectively constructed. This definition is also vague and can mean anything, "split-apart"??? This is VERY UNREASONABLE precisely because Bleuler thought what he himself was normal according to his own pathetic prejudices. Not only that, but you AGAIN IGNORED my problem with this, that this definition HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH motor disruptions, catatonic states, or the 100 other quack definitions of schizophrenia.
I'm curious, how do you account for what you apparently believe is inferiority in certain races? Or do you still hold to this belief?
I base inferiority/superior on the quality of thinking and the structure of society that races have had. Although this is subjective, looking at Truth and philosophy it becomes much more objective since some specific races have been more philosophical than others. Inferior/superior may very well be caused by genetics and brain structure, but they aren't DISORDERS or DISEASES, they're just LEVELS of functioning.
There are many people who share this view, but they don't end up hallucinating, getting their limbs locked into weird positions, unable to take care of themselves, etc.
hallucinations occur to many "regular" people with no problems as well. Getting their limbs locked, and if it really is not done on purpose, has nothing to do with psychiatry or with the 'psyche' of the mind, it may be entirely physiological. "depression" "paranoia" "psychoses" "bipolar" etc etc.. have nothing at all to relate with locked limbs, since one is entirely existential and psychological, while the other is physiological.
See because some people have a lower threshold, it makes no sense to give labels, cause it's entirely on different levels basis, not on a YES or NO basis. If everyone has a threshold to certain problems, then everyone has a "disorder" but some can't control it. This is why labelling is wrong.
The majority of people actually end up feeling relieved when they receive a diagnosis for what ever problem they have. It gives them a sense of orientation and they are comforted to know that it's not their fault that they can't stop behaving in ways that has made their life difficult, if not miserable.
This is just retarded. Just because they're relieved doesn't change anything!!! Yes they're relieved because everything is "official" this is called being credulous and uncritical, and is in no way an indicator of progress, much the opposite.
I think you've been bamboozled by anti-psychiatry literature.
have you even thoroughly READ their literature???? It is one of the most sober, clear headed, logical, literature backed by thousands of patients who have seen it for what it is and have had their lives destroyed. It contains more empirical evidence and logical reasoning than psychiatry. I have no respect for fools who insult things they haven't even read. Trevor is agreeing with anti-psychiatry and he's definitely had more experience as a patient, not to mention better philosophical reasoning.
That's too broadly sweeping of a statement.
yeah? well fuck you it's true. Many generalizations are true, and this one is backed by empirical evidence from thousands of patients, thousands of families, even psychiatrists, ever since the 60's. Many people LIKE their civil liberties, and they're not prepared to have it taken away by belligerant jackasses like you.
There was a case with identical twins, where one brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia, whereas the other brother had no problems. An MRI was done on both of their brains. Guess what? The schizophrenic brother's brain showed atrophy and enlarged ventricles. This is science. Taking that evidence and putting forth the hypotheses that brain abnormalities combined with environmental factors play a role in schizophrenia is also science.
hmm this fortunately REFUTES your genetic hypothesis of "disorders." So much for gene therapy. Second, WTF IS SCHIZOPHRENIA YOU IDIOT!!! This bullshit word has over 100 quack definitions that have nothing to do with each other, you've been IGNORING this from the beginning. It has been labelled as "split-mind" "paranoia" "depression" "emotional blunting" "delusions of grandeur" "irrelevant thoughts" etc etc... This bullshit MRI means nothing at all, because they don't even know WTF they're looking for, this is not science.
Sure, wasn't it you who expressed conviction that some races were weaker than others? What is the origin of this weakness? Or did you change your mind on that issue?
mentally weaker yes, genetic yes. But this isn't a disorder or disease, it's just different levels of functioning. Calling something a disorder or disease is like saying there's an objective "normality" with this "disorder" not being part of the human condition and that which can be "fixed" from the person. Inferior races don't have "disease" or "disorder" it's just evolution and genetics.
Even PET scans can detect differences in the brains of a schizophrenic patient in comparison to an individual who has no major problems.
this is so stupid, I bet the second picture happens thousands of times in "normal" people, the red in the occipital lobe shows visual activity, big deal. There's NO SUCH THING AS "normal"!!!! God, that's so fucking stupid. What is this pic supposed to prove? That we can have only 1 specific brain state?
That things have an order and regularity to them allows us to have a sense of free will. If things were totally disorganized and chaotic, a sense of freedom would be impossible. Most people who admit to having a mental disorder admit that 'they just can't help it.' Their disorder robs them of their sense of free will, to varying degrees.
freewill is an illusion. Wtf are you talking about order and regularity? Life is anything but. Some people are more disorganized and chaotic than others, it's called being different. There's no such thing as freewill, I'm a Determinist, does that mean I have a mental disorder?
Not really. If the individual wants help and seeks help by people who claim to have studied the human mind a great deal (modern psychiatrists), then they may be regarded as having a disorder. If the individual doesn't feel they need help and can cope on their own, then there is no reason for that individual to label himself or allow others to label him as having a disorder.
psychiatrists have NOT studied the human mind, they are not philosophers and psychologists for fuck's sakes. Lots of people seek help from their friends and families, it's called the human condition and problems of life, not "disorders" that are alien to life and that can be "fixed" with mind destroying drugs or quack electric shocks to the brain that cause seizures which is a way of the body fighting for its life. Just because quack shrinks claimed they have studied the mind doesn't mean they have, they're exploiters and sexual abusers. The quack "symptoms" and "diagnosis" that shrinks label "disorders" on people occur to everyone, "depression" "paranoia" "psychoses" "emotional blunting" even "personality disorder!!!!" For fuck's sakes, PERSONALITY DISORDER? It's time for people of reason, and people who want civil liberties to say, enough is enough.

I got this from an Anti-Psychiatry piece on schizophrenia, http://antipsychiatry.org/schizoph.htm

In his book Schizophrenia Revealed - From Neurons to Social Interaction (W.W.Norton, New York, 2001), Michael Foster Green, Ph.D., a professor in the UCLA Department of Psychiatary and Behavioral Sciences, and chief of the treatment unit of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Illnes Research, Education and Clinical Center, does his best to promote the idea that so-called schizophrenia is biological. He nevertheless makes the following admissions: "...we do not yet have an adequate understanding of schizophrenia... a specific brain abnormaility in schizophrenia has remained elusive. ...schizophrenia cannot be diagnosed by a brain scan" (pages 4, 6, and 95).

idiots like Cory need to read Anti-Psychiatry first before spewing shit out of their belligerant asses.

And do you know what the date was when Michael Green said that? Looks like that was 7 years ago at least...

I'll reply to the rest of what you said eventually.

Wow... I thought I was having a mid-life crisis when I went out and blew untold thousands of dollars on a new sailboat. Never once did it cross my mind to take sides on the very interesting subject of whether Psychology has a valid paridigm. It doesn't, of course, but the philosophical questions regarding the emergence of consciousness do require some sort of "language" to be developed in order to speak intelligently about abstract concepts. Even the creationists must admit that the first few days of trying out the old grey matter must've been quite interesting... sorta' like riding a bike in traffic the first time out.

IMHO: Settle down, goes sailing, and contemplate that I wrote this in "normal" sized font. It says so just to the right on the screen.

Yes, this is largely what I'm arguing. Psychiatry/psychotherapy is incredibly flawed right now - but we have to start somewhere. Studying abnormal people is a great opportunity to learn about what biological and environmental factors make us more vulnerable to breaking down helplessly, and thus how to engineer human beings into a more ideal state, biologically as well as culturally.

Cory, 7 years ago isn't that far at all. Not only that, you FAIL to see that schizophrenia DOES NOT EXIST, because it has 100 quack definitions that DON'T RELATE TO EACH OTHER WHATSOEVER. It's not hard to grasp this problem, you cannot look for something if you have no fucking clue what you're looking for. Psychiatrists themselves cannot agree on a clear coherent definition. The meaning of the word itself has NO RELATION to the 100 quack definitions it has. if you were honest enough, you would READ the anti-psychiatry literature, and see that 95% of it contains sources from psychiatrists themselves.

psychiatry is flawed because IT'S NOT A MEDICAL SCIENCE. It is pure quackery and power-mongering rubbish. Trevor has had more intimate experience with it and he'll agree. "Studying abnormal people"??? There's NO SUCH THING AS ABNORMALITY, it's a purely SOCIALLY CONSTRUCTED CONCEPT with NO biological disease or markers. Psychiatrists think abnormality is doing what thousands of other idiots don't do, that's how fucked they and you are. People break down helplessly because that's WHAT LIFE IS. Not everyone is privelaged enough to sustain the absurdities of life by ignoring it, typically called "sanity."

"anti-social personality disorder" being anti-social is NOT a disorder!!!!!!

"paranoia" perfectly good reasons to be paranoid by power mongering psychiatrists or by the heart of darkness of humans

"psychoses" loss of contact with reality???? Yes, no wonder Kevin Solway was diagnosed with "personality disorder and psychoses".
how to engineer human beings into a more ideal state, biologically as well as culturally.
hahah what the HELL IS THIS? This quote is absolutely ridiculous, sort of like Nazis. You are the perfect example of the power-mongering psychiatrist that seeks to destroy civil liberties and exploit victims.
