Intentional communities have come a long way over the last forty years. Once considered the provenance of hippies seeking to get back to the land, renounce worldly goods and perhaps submit to a guru, intentional communities come in flavors as varied as their many residents; tastes and needs.

Some Alpha Delt alums went to Harvard to study with acid-proponent Tim Leary, White says. Robert Frost also spoke on campus.

Dulce et Decorum Est

Dulce et Decorum Est

Having an all-volunteer army minimizes objections to the war since no one of any influence has to go; if a lot of high-school grads from Tennessee are getting killed, well, it's not a good thing of course, but who really cares? This facilitates hobbyist wars. A volunteer army is a small army, so you have to send the same troops for tour after tour until they are half-mad and their families wrecked. Who cares? They are just rednecks anyway - not our sort of people, nobody a general would let his daughter date.

War looks exciting to office workers, but has less appeal to those who are forced to fight. It has even less appeal for those who are hit.

Gibbon noted that in the heyday of the Roman repulic, the legions were manned by the sons of yeoman farmers who thot they had an inheritance to protect and some say in the laws. But when they switched to what we'd call an all volunteer army, it was drawn from the disenfranchised lower orders and even barbarian foreigners.

The allegiance of the legions shifted from that of sustaining the republic to that of the generals who paid them. The power elite, who have always done it on the cheap, thot they were getting a good deal. Machiavelli saw how they shifted the tax burden to the middle class, but after they ran out of money, financial crisis emerged and they needed to call in a general to restore order. In this case, Ceasar.

Caesar rebalanced the books to the gratification of the masses by simply using the troops to seize the assets of the rich, looting them as effectively, but with less wanton destruction than had unorganized barbarians done it. Since by then the people no longer had any effective say in the way the government ran, they had nothing to loose by supporting tyranny.

Course, the power elites never read history, they only make it, and keep repeating it cause they never read it.
