When I observe the human race as a whole, I don't see them changing their ways of ignorance unless they reach a breaking point of destructive consequences. Even then, I am not convinced they would turn to reason and logic as a way to save themselves. The vast majority of people I encounter do not seem conscious enough to realize the arrogance ,hypocrisy, and blatant stupidity they demonstrate on a daily basis.
All the wise men through out history and the present have not been able to curb humanity, as a whole, towards Truth and wisdom. Perhaps "Heaven on Earth" is not the destiny of the human race. Have the lives of our ancestors created a stumbling block that set into motion a snow-ball effect of ignorance which has hindered the masses ability to value absolute Truth? Or is mental and spiritual inadequacy of the masses to blame?
It may not be as cut and dry as these two choices, could it be a combination of the two? There may be more people who have the potential to value Truth first and foremost than is demonstrated by the masses. Maybe there was a certain point in history when the ignorance of men created a stumbling block which prevented future generations from valuing Truth. The stumbling block may have been man's failure to recognize the true nature of women and un-wise culture that certain groups of men created. But if these "wise men" were in fact wise you think they would recognize the ignorance of these people and either avoid them or point out to them their faults instead of being duped.
In my own case I can't say for sure if I would have ended up valuing wisdom and Truth to the extent that I currently do without the great wise men of past and present to pave the way. Looking back on my younger years I see that I did value Truth in an unconscious kind of way, and grew restless with mediocrity. Still, in actuality it was my own ability and desire to understand Truth that allowed me to know the meaning of their words. When I started to become more conscious of others and my own motives/actions in my late teens, I began to see most people were hardly conscious at all, or at least less so than me.
Being that I was able to do this in a society/culture/family that otherwise supresses wisdom and promotes ignorance, I must side with what seems to be the fact that the masses are mentally and spiritually inadequate to lead a life of wisdom and Truth.
Human Inadequacy
I agree with you, evolution has made us how we are. Ignorance (to Reality) is conducive to surviving long enough to reproduce. Our ancestors (proto human ancestors) didn’t have the brain power to contemplate the things we do, but without them we wouldn’t be here to do so. As for our Homo sapiens ancestors, they, like most people today, had the equipment to do the job, but not the will.
Why think when you can play games and seduce one other? Would they even think that their ways could be changed, if they reached an apex of destruction? They would probably seek out a religion that preached peace, and do what they were told by said religions practitioners.
Whenever I talk to my friends about what they call “my philosophizing†they seem open to it, and ready to think about it to an extent. All these friends have been males thus far. But to me everyone seems to be open to a bit of truth when it leads to something they like. How much reality they want seems to do with how much they are willing to suffer for an idea. I have three friends who are at least open to thinking about reality and being harsh on themselves. I have printed things for them to read (DQ’s Huang Po excerpts and Schopenhauer’s ‘On Women’) and given them some PC files to read and think about, but they still don’t have much enthusiasm, which is also very important.
I can say about myself that I feel like I was much in your same position. A month or two ago I e-mailed KS and said something to the effect of ‘I sometimes feel I am destined for truth.’ When I think about that I feel embarrassed and the same veil keeps dropping. But I do think I have always valued truth, I was just too young to recognize it.
