I never met one. There are guys who really prefer women to be dumb, or at least dumber than they are.
The Ethical Bachelor?
The genetic fact is that a guy wins both ways: if he mates with a woman who is dumber than he is, he has improved on her genes and the result is a net gain for the gene pool. If he mates with a woman who is smarter than himself, his own genes are upgraded. A woman on the other hand only wins if she mates with someone smarter. If she mates with someone dumber, she is stuck raising offspring whose genes are less advanced than her own. There are guys who really prefer women to be dumb, or at least dumber than they are.
Brad Pitt could actually impregnate 10,000 women, but Angelina Jolie can only have 12-15 kids max. Women get to roll the dice far fewer times so the responsibility to maximize each roll is enormous.
A Darwinian insight?
G_d only knows where I picked this up, but maybe someone can confirm or deny it: purportedly Darwin observed that smart people would tend to mate with smart people, and dumb people with fellow dullards, and that eventually humanity would diverge into two distinct subspecies, the smarties and the dummies. The smarties would see that the planet was becoming overcrowded and curtail their reproduction, but the dummies being oblivious to same would continnue to breed. Eventually the smarties would die out. Has anyone ever seen a specific reference from Darwin like this?

reedsch,
No, but it seems to be the way things are happening. :)

That came through an anthropology community I'm on recently. It wasn't Darwin though, some more recent guy... and pretty much universally laughed at.reedsch wrote:G_d only knows where I picked this up, but maybe someone can confirm or deny it: purportedly Darwin observed that smart people would tend to mate with smart people, and dumb people with fellow dullards, and that eventually humanity would diverge into two distinct subspecies, the smarties and the dummies. No, probably not, but even there, the trophy wife is usually a second wife, and she is young and ideal looking. Her brains could even be part of the trophy if she's not too assertive. You haven't met too many rich men, have you?
This seems to be largely the case in the upper classes. The term "trophy wife" has a reason behind it. :)
Very true, yet even there, the guy who mates with a dummy only wins if he basically has little involvement in raising them. But this is probably a reason why women prefer men who are somewhat smarter than they are, and perhaps even a partial reason women like money, as it is some indication of brains and ability. The genetic fact is that a guy wins both ways: if he mates with a woman who is dumber than he is, he has improved on her genes and the result is a net gain for the gene pool. But then, it is pretty easy for men to give the impression that they are smarter, because they are talented in areas that women are not.

Actually, I think it's that the same qualities that women like also happen to be the same qualities that tend to make money. I think if this were a tenderless society, women would go for the same men just because of who they are.Iolaus wrote: a partial reason women like money, as it is some indication of brains and ability.
Do you find that they are actually delighted if they are in the situation, or just are delighted at the fantasy, maybe even delighted at first or when they are not too close to her - but never got in a relationship with one?Iolaus wrote:I think it's a myth that men are intimidated by smart women. Granted not all guys are the same - there may be a few out there who are actually liberal enough to be okay with a smart, capable woman. Most though would boil it down to a competition. For some, if they couldn't "out-do" their wife or girlfriends would work to undermine her. Even balanced guys who wouldn't do anything against the female, it would still irk them if she were to out-do him regularly - especially in a traditionally male-dominated arena like who is making more money. That would even go for if the woman really wasn't smarter than the man, but just out-doing him in something where society expects the man to perform better.

Then again, there are the guys who wouldn't mind just mooching off of whoever they could, and just lazing around all day. There would be a male equivalent to the shrewish housewife who lounges on the couch all day watching soap operas and eating bon-bons...sschaula wrote:Sugar mama!
Even wives of the wealthy are expected to do something - even if it's charity work.

I remember it from an old science fiction story called 'The Marching Morons'.reedsch wrote:G_d only knows where I picked this up, but maybe someone can confirm or deny it: purportedly Darwin observed that smart people would tend to mate with smart people, and dumb people with fellow dullards, and that eventually humanity would diverge into two distinct subspecies, the smarties and the dummies. Delighted and proud to be married to them.Do you find that they are actually delighted if they are in the situation, or just are delighted at the fantasy, maybe even delighted at first or when they are not too close to her - but never got in a relationship with one?
It's not a matter of liberal. It may be a matter of self confidence.there may be a few out there who are actually liberal enough to be okay with a smart, capable woman.
But what about a woman who is smart?I personally would love to be with a woman that made a ton of money.
