Ten Thousand Year Clock

Post by Eric Schiedler »

Jeff Bezos of Amazon is using part of his wealth to fund a project to build a clock that will keep time for over 10,000 years. The project has a $42 million budget.

I can post a link if anyone is interested.

The concept is self-defeating, since the clock can only last 10,000 years if humans find meaning in the purpose of keeping the clock going throughout the entire era. The clock only has meaning as a tool today. Is it a tool to create wisdom in the world in the present?

I imagine that it is no more a useful tool than science and technology museums for children or the plaque on the original Voyager spacecraft. People will want to gain power to create such artifacts, perhaps, instead of learning look at things from new perspectives. Time will tell if the clock will make people reflect that all their actions will have ripple effects that last 10,000 years and more.
